RE: Make MSB great again!
I see nothing wrong with an Advertisement being a one-off post with no replies allowed, and a companion thread for the "reviews" of and commentary about it. The questions are:
-
Who begins that second post? The advertiser or an admin type here?
-
Where does it go? With the Hogpit an opt-in section of the site, you can't just put a review/commentary post there, so it probably needs to go somewhere that's openly accessible to anyone, with an account or not.
-
But, what about when things come up in there that would make it more fitting to go to the Hogpit? Because, that will happen. Criticism does not always remain constructive and there will be very good reasons to go to a place such as "This game is fucked and here's why." Does an admin type then need to create an offshoot post that redirects into the Hogpit?
As for anything else at the moment, I'm not sure what to suggest. I'd like to see less vitriol from some people toward others simply because of opinions on OCs/FCs or what types of characters someone likes to play, less trolling of others as well, but I realize that's like pissing into the wind. I come here to see what's going on with various games, find out if there's anything I should be aware of good or bad, and discuss problems when they arise, not get into petty squabbles about what people like to play.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
@Seraphim73 The problem with BoD is neither of the people who run the game are all that good at coding stuff like that, and they have far too much going on to really focus on game improvements. There are numerous things that have never been put in place over the years for those reasons.
-
RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
@Seraphim73 Ah. I wouldn't really know, as I'm pretty unfamiliar with just about every system out there. I just know it worked fairly well for me.
Blood of Dragons uses something that's not all that different, though most of their stats go up to something like 60-70 capped for normal characters, higher for the more special ones. Of course, they also had benchmarks to help people understand how good or bad their character was at a thing.
They have a sort of rudimentary roll system for jousting and combat, though the combat system was always designed with a character's riding ability factored in and that didn't always work too well considering most combat in the game was on foot.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
Based on what I'm reading about GURPS, I'd want to stay far away from it.
The system Cuendillar used was more of a ranking system. As an example, one of my characters had a 4 in Sword. Going by the files on that talent - and the classifications were similar whether it's Sword, Bow, and so on - it broke it down like so:
1 - You know how to keep from cutting off your foot. Better keep clear of your comrades, though, just in case.
2 - You're good enough to use a sword in battle without injuring yourself or your comrades.
3 - You're starting to look like you know what you're doing.
4 - Wielding a sword is like walking to you now.
5 - Not many people can use a sword like you.
6 - Your sword is practically a part of your body.
7 - Your sword is a part of your body.
8 - You might be able to hold your own with a Blademaster.
9 - You can probably hold your own with a Blademaster.
10 - You probably have the qualities to become a Blademaster. They also used an optional Dice system, explaining the average difficulty for a task was to roll a stat or skill at 6. 7 would be tougher, and 8-9 would be really hard with 10 reserved for nearly impossible tasks. Then you could have a variety of success (or fail/botch) results to help determine how well you did or didn't do at what you attempted. A few examples:
COMBAT SKILLS:
*Attack/defend against target with a weapon about the same size as yours: 6
*Attack/defend against target with a larger weapon (Sword/Hands vs Staff): 7-8
*Attack/defend against target while doing some acrobatic, dramatic move: 7-9DIPLOMACY:
*Deal peaceably with a neutral party: 6
*Deal peaceably with a hostile party: 7-8
*Deal peaceably with an enemy who hates you: 9-10MUSIC:
*Perform a normal piece: 6
*Perform a complicated piece or perform cold: 7-8
*Perform while under threat of death by a Cairhienin Lord: 8-9These things could also be used in tandem with an attack by one person and a defense, and their newsfiles had some examples based on what one person might be attacking with and how someone else might be defending, so difficulties could vary. When I played there, I thought it all worked well if people wanted to leave things up to chance instead of simply coming to an agreement about what would happen.
Obviously just taking that entire CG/Skill/Dice/Etc. system wouldn't be reasonable for a new game, but from a personal POV I found it to be simple, easy to follow, and useful for the sake of comparison. Improvement was encouraged through IC interactions, with EXP earned from a weekly nomination system.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
I'd have no real idea what sort of timeframe to suggest for it. It's been a long time since I've thought about that in terms of periods that would avoid dealing with having all the book characters around, if that's the goal.
A lot of it depends on what you would or wouldn't want people able to do and how they'd be meant to fit in overall without, presumably stretching RP centers too thin. But, if you have a mind for game expansion if the playerbase can support it, you also have to factor in what you may or may not lock yourself away from if you pick a time where there are, for example, no Aiel or Seanchan possible. Having a couple more tightly-grouped RP centers is best, though.
The war/conflict side can be appealing, but I'd take care not to make it too great a focus at the expense of anything else. Not suggesting that's the plan, of course. I just like a variety of RP options available within a setting.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
@Collective I've played a wolfbrother or two (probably not very surprising), and on one hand they made some things very fun to deal with based on what they were capable of, while on the other I felt like there were more opportunities that could have been out there that weren't capitalized on because there weren't many people to work on certain angles with.
One example would be touching more on things with the world of dreams and the relationship with the wolves themselves. Another could be a more open fight against the Dark, depending on what's going on. I'd try that again if the chance was there.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
It could be interesting to have a WoT game again, especially if it developed into having a solid playerbase and a variety of things to do.
I had a good time with Cuendillar back in the day, but it just kind of fizzled out and even if the game is still up, it's been dead for years.

RE: How to use Potato MU Client
@skew Thanks. I'll have to test that out and see if it solves the issue I had. I'm not very good with the format of the syntax that requires compared to how SimpleMU handles it.
-
RE: How to use Potato MU Client
I'm going to have to take some time to dig into this further. I've been using SimpleMU for years, but the functionality of Potato seems to be pretty good and the dual text windows can be useful.
Where I got hung up in my initial poking at the program was dealing with events I want to set up. I'm accustomed to having pages colored yellow to help me separate them from everything else, but in SimpleMU I can also have my character's name show up as green. I've found this makes it easier to pick out when a lot is going on and I need to focus on something.
My problem so far is I haven't been able to get Potato's interface to accept both things at the same time. I can have pages show up in yellow but the name is caught with it, or I can have the name in green but the page itself doesn't change color. None of the combinations of things I tried setting would work for that. I'm sure there's a way, but I haven't figured it out yet.

RE: Carnivale's Playlist
I think Aether was the first real non-superhero style game I ended up on, and I still miss it from time to time.
-
RE: Carnivale's Playlist
I was primarily Sharpclaw, who ended up being the first graisha accepted into Delphi.
Now, I can't say how thematic that ended up being or not based on the whole setting, but from the way it was communicated to me early on OOCly it was one of those "This is highly unlikely to succeed so don't get your hopes up" kinds of things.
Whatever the case, it made for a lot of good RP I was able to be a part of while it lasted.

RE: A Constructive Thread About People We Might Not Like
@surreality Probably for the best, and you don't have to worry about me wasting any more time on that part here.

RE: A Constructive Thread About People We Might Not Like
@ThatGuyThere Well, you can be factually correct all you like on this one. It doesn't change what the primary usage of "American" is accepted as today in relation to racial descriptors.
-
RE: A Constructive Thread About People We Might Not Like
@ThatGuyThere Okay, maybe not always, but at this point you're pissing into the wind (and apparently content to do it) because you know exactly what the meaning is now to the majority, yet you insist on trying to tell people it really doesn't mean that. Sometimes, the usage of words and their meanings does change.
There's trying to argue a point, and there's being willfully stubborn. Guess which one you fall under?
Do you also go around trying to tell people "gay" really ought to mean someone's just happy?
-
RE: A Constructive Thread About People We Might Not Like
"American" has always applied to the United States by default, not the North/South American continents themselves. This dates back to the American colonies when the English crossed the Atlantic.
If you use "African-American," the vast majority of people out there know and understand this to be talking about a US Citizen.
If you really want to differentiate it that much, you need to be using "Americas" or "the Americas." By itself, "America" is understood to mean the USA.

RE: A Constructive Thread About People We Might Not Like
The thing to remember here is Spider IS a witch. She's already been tested enough times with the result a clear one.
If it was somebody with no history of asshattery yet, that's a much different story.

RE: What Do You Collect?
I don't know if I'd say I collect any of these yet, but I did just get this in the mail the other day, my first from the site:
