    • RE: Wish Fulfillment RP

@faraday said in Wish Fulfillment RP:

It's also a bit illogical - like if you're in a room with Olympic athletes and Oscar-winning actors and somehow "nobody's special" just because everyone there is outstanding.

It's not that nobody is special but the baseline average has now been raised considerably. If you're at an Oscar party and someone asks "Who's the best actor here?" you're going to get a lot of different answers. It's more difficult for a single person to stand out in that room because they all have high "acting skills".

If, however, in that same room you have Mike Tyson and the question is "Who is the best fighter in the room?" the answer becomes much more obvious.

Edited to add that while I might argue the above point, I'm not oblivious to the real reason why other players don't acknowledge something special about other player's characters; because it might in some way suggest that their character is somehow less special. Player arrogance is the real problem, of that I am aware.

    • Unmakeable Games

So, I've been working with a few very new folks, not just to MUing but to RP in general. They are intimidated by MUSHing but are willing to give it a shot in a controlled environment. So, I set up a game and have been working with them on it. Earlier today, one of them asked me, "Why don't you use this to set up a GI Joe game?"

We've been playing the tabletop GI Joe RPG in our TT group, and today we were messing around with the FS3 combat system(which I'm not an expert in). They thought GI Joe would work great with the system and didn't understand why a game doesn't exist.

While I agreed with them that the game would be cool, I think the problem is there's no interest in it out in the world. We'd get 4 players, and 3 of them were right here. LOL

I explained that, in my experience, the MU community is interested mainly in modern-day horror and superhero games. This is probably because of the easy social component each comes with. While I think that could also exist on a GI Joe game, I think the knee-jerk response would be, "I'm not interested in an action game like that."

I know this is kind of akin to the old thread "Games I'd Love To Make But Won't" but instead of neroing that thread, I figured I'd just make a new one. So do you have any games you'd love to make but the juice just isn't worth the squeeze for whatever reason?

@Ghost Renegade Game Studios. It runs off their Essence20 system. It's not bad. It powers GI Joe, Transformers, Power Rangers, and...My Little Pony.

Modiphius does the 2d20 system that powers Star Trek, Fallout, Conan, and some other stuff. I feel that's a pretty good system. I'm currently in love with Star Trek and Fallout. Love the settings and I love the system. So happy Star Trek finally has a decent system to power it.

Free League does Alien which I'm very much hoping to run for my TT group some day.

    • RE: DC Elseworlds MUX

Sadly I just never quite found my footing with this game. I'm honestly not entirely sure why, we had a good start but things just sort of fizzled and my attempts to rekindle it never quite worked out. In addition, my interests are beginning to shift from the superhero genre to things more horror and fantasy related. As such I have officially closed DC Rebirth. The site will remain up for another week if anyone wants to grab any decomps or anything.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by. I had a great time there with my PCs and I will certainly miss the RP. We had a small player base throughout but you were all fantastic. Thanks for the memories. 🙂

    • RE: Worst Movies

Okay, here's another awful movie: Bound to Vengeance. I watch a lot of awful horror and can make it through almost anything. Sometimes I'm rewarded by finding hidden gems like Deadtectives. Then there are the rare times I find a movie I just can't finish and this was one of them. They managed to make a revenge torture film boring and blew out even my suspension of disbelief for some things. Just an awful movie.

This is gonna be a quick post but yes, in my experience a smaller more focused game would work better than a large sprawling game. I eventually had to close DC because of this lack of focus. I tried narrowing it down to just Gotham in the end but by that time I think it was too late. A nice narrow focus and plots to go with them would work very well for a comic MU I think.

    • RE: Mists of Barovia - A Savage Worlds MUX

Thought I'd do an update on this project as I've gotten a few PMs about it. RP has currently been put on hold on the game as I prep the game for a public release and upgrade everything from Savage Worlds Deluxe to the new Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. Most things are similar but it does require at least minor changes to almost everything, especially bloodlines(our races/species) and templates since they've revised their race creation guidelines.

There's no real ETA for when this will be ready for RP again but I'm hoping not more than a month or two. 🙂

@Auspice It is a subscription service but it's one of the more reasonable subs; I think it's $4/month? It's the best $4/month I spend to be honest. They have a ton of old horror movies and are starting to get a lot of exclusives. Deadtectives, the upcoming Creepshow anthology show, and I think they have the exclusive streaming rights to NOS4A2 though I could be wrong on that one. And, as Surreality said, they do offer a 7 day free trial so you can hit and run pretty cleanly. 🙂

    • RE: Savage Worlds?

I hear you. That was my belief too. I just get a bit worried that the MU universe wouldn't support alternatives, you know? WoD is super popular for a reason; people know it and embrace it. Not many people know Savage Worlds.

I've been playing around with a FFG system for a bit now. A tricky system but I think I have it going pretty smoothly at this point. If you're interested in checking out what I've done PM me and I'll let you know where my test site is.

@jealousy My short answer would be "not much". I believe in ease of character generation and minimizing insane amounts of continuity. Important bullet points are all that would really be necessary and we can always link to Comicvine for a lot of stuff.

Agreed. I just like the settings. 1800's London. Again, Jack the Ripper, Jekylland Hyde, etc and so on.

    • RE: Star Wars Stand Alone - Staff Sought

We haven't played the game in a while(which makes me sad) so forgive me if I'm a bit off on the mechanics.

Scene 1: We were playing Edge of the Empire. Our characters were in a cantina and all hell broke loose. Our characters all scrambled and my wife's character, a Twi'lek bounty hunter, decided to jump up into the rafters of the bar. Well she succeeded but generated a lot of strain in the process. So we asked as a group, why would she gain all that strain climbing up into the rafters? And one player commented about how the character had "packed on some pounds in the downtime" so started the "fat Twi'lek" meme at our table. My wife embraced this and future physical related strain were rationalized by her being a bit out of shape.

Scene 2: Same characters on another adventure. One of the characters, a smuggler, tried to charm a waitress in another cantina. She failed but generated a lot of opportunities. The GM decided that she failed at a normal charm but decided that the waitress had become completely enamored and obsessed with the character and a new NPC was introduced into the game for future complications.

There are other minor things. You can use opportunities to create gun jams in enemies or use opportunities to set up cool collaborations. It's a neat mechanic but you do have to embrace it. Some times things would get a bit stagnant at our table and people would just use opportunities to heal strain or use the negative symbols to cause strain without rationalizing it. In the end it is a mechanic but it's one that can be used by creative people to really liven up a standard RP encounter.

    • RE: X-Men Utopia MUX

I remember the games that required thousands upon thousands of words on even the most simply powered characters. I always found it to be an exercise of self-indulgence (either on the staff side, look how elitist we are, or on the player's end, look how much I can write on my favorite character!) Either way I never once thought it helped keep bad players out of the game. I can, however, remember countless instances where RP scenes broke down into bickering about how a power or ability was worded (or was not worded). Essay style traits, in my opinion, do nothing but prolong character generation.

I like using RPG systems because they work. You can the same info from essay style traits at a glance, saving a ton of time both in character generation and in play. Marvel Heroic is about as basic as you can get (though I personally prefer FASERIP) and I think will work fairly well for what I'm looking for.

Of course mine is just one opinion.

For me it's less about emulating any one type of serial and more just the general atmosphere. Foggy cobblestone streets lit by flickering gas lamps. Shadowy killers lurking in the alleys. Things like that. It's just one of my favorite periods.
