As someone who has played every iteration of D&D from way back when plus a good chunk of the various knockoffs I have to say that, in my opinion, 5E is the best version of D&D to ever hit print. I think Wizards really hit it out of the park with this one. Now maybe one day I'll finish my 5E character generation and see about opening a 5E MUX.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
I used a variant of FASERIP on a Masters of the Universe game that was modified just a bit. Karma was constant and could be spent during scenes as normal and just replenished in between scenes. We also largely did away with the chart options and just said you gain points for decent successes. A single point for yellow and two points for red. You could use those points for various things like increasing the effect attribute (so that someone with an AM Strength could actually hurt someone with an AM Invulnerability) or creating stunts for powers or what not. We felt it worked really well but there was just 5 of us.

RE: Are there any historically-themed WoD mu*?
For me it's less about emulating any one type of serial and more just the general atmosphere. Foggy cobblestone streets lit by flickering gas lamps. Shadowy killers lurking in the alleys. Things like that. It's just one of my favorite periods.

RE: Fringe/Weird RPGs
Went and looked through one of my bookshelves and found...
- MIB: The official Men In Black RPG by West End Games.
- Toon: A fun slapstick game that emulates the old looney tunes cartoons.
- Ghostbusters/GB(International): This isn't really a bad or weird game just...it's f'n Ghostbusters and the progenitor of the D6 system by WEG. I love this game so much.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
Throwing my two cents into the "enjoyable horror movie" topic I've found there are a ton of really good horror movies being streamed by the big 3 (Amazon, Hulu, and Netfix). Here's just a list of movies I don't think I've seen listed here yet.
The Blackcoat's Daughter
The Monster
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
The Woman
The Taking of Deborah Logan
Clown
The Ritual (IMO one of the best horror movies in recent memory)
The Shrine is a pretty decent flick
Prodigy skirts the line of horror but is pretty good
Coherence is more sci-fi than horror but was shockingly not bad
Deadgirl was bizarre but interesting
Contracted was another bizarre but interesting movie
Absentia is a movie where I hate the name but love the actual movie itself. Low budget but very well done, IMO.I've watched every one of these more than once. Your mileage may vary, of course. Especially with the more bizarre movies like Deadgirl and Contracted.
There's also the movie Excision which had some good ideas but was just a bit...too bizarre for me...

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
Just a note that work on X-Men Utopia has paused (possibly stopped). The reason is I'm working with some fantastic folk on another X-Game that we're hoping to have live soon. It's not X-Men Utopia but I like it and, for now, it's taking up my time for coding and what not. I'll re-evaluate X-Men Utopia once that game opens. Just wanted to keep everyone updated!

Non-WoD Horror Game (Buffy, Cthulhu, Etc)
So a year or so ago my wife and I were going to open up a Buffy the Vampire Slayer game. Set in modern day and treating Buffy canon as having happened when the show aired (so all potential slayers became full slayers in 2003). At the time this had given the world 10 years to evolve since then.
The problem is we were going to base it in a fictional version of Sleepy Hollow. We liked how The Reach had families which created instant avenues for PC connections and RP and hoped to emulate that with famous families from that story (Van Brunts, Van Tassels, etc) borrowing heavily from the Tim Burton movie. Then we read about a Sleepy Hollow TV show and decided to scrap the idea to avoid confusion. We were going to go with an alternate setting but could never quite settle on one.
So here we are 2 years later and my wife is like "we should do it anyway". So I guess my question to the masses is...could a non-WoD game work? I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm mostly concerned with could a BUFFY non-WoD game work. We'd be using the cinematic unisystem, which is all coded and ready to go and what not. I'm just not sure if the Buffy-verse would still be a draw going on 12 years since the show went off the air.
Going along the same lines about about other non-WoD systems? Call of Cthulhu (classic or Trail) for instance? I think the trick with that would be constant stories and making sure people did not get attached to their PCs.
Anyway, at work and bored and thought I'd toss this out into the wild to see what kind of responses I got. Thanks for reading!

RE: Worst Games
This is a rough one for me because it was a game I was very much looking forward to. We're gonna have to take the way back machine to 1999 and a game called Birth of the Federation. It was a civilization builder type game set in the Star Trek universe. Everything about it looked great but it had one major flaw; it was un-fucking-playable thanks to the anti-piracy shit they threw on it.
They'd eventually patch it up properly and give it a decent UI overhaul making it a decent game but it was a long road to get there and this was back in the day when you had to track down patches and install them yourself after downloading them on your fucking dial-up connection.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
So this thread inspired me to watch Ready Player One and I have to say I thought it was pretty fantastic. It's definitely a love letter to the 80's and geek culture in general, so if you can't get on board with that you're likely not to have the best of times,. As a child of the 80's, however, I had a blast watching it. I thought it did a great job of paying tribute to geek culture while also creating some very interesting characters unique to the movie. Two thumbs up from me.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
For the record, Mutant Genesis MUX is the game I've been speaking about.

Empire Bay (M&M 3E)
So I threw Empire Bay MUX up a year or so ago in the hopes that it'd become a nice little sandboxy place for superhero RP. That never really happened. We had some nibbles at first but interest just never took off.
I'm still jonesing for some hero RP and I have a bit more time on my hand lately so I figured I'd take a bit more of a direct hand with the game. I won't say it's "re-opening" because technically it never closed. What I'll say is I'm hoping to start sparking more RP. To do that I'm looking to do 2 things.
1: Draw in players. To that end I intend to start up a government based hero group. That's all I really know for now, that's it'll be government based. I figured we can hammer out the rest of the details as players come to claim slots on said team. While I have other obligations (such as my Force and Destiny game) I still think I could devote 1 or 2 days a week here for purposes of RP and scenes.
2: Draw in staffers. This can also probably be broken down into two areas. First, I'd like some app staffers. People familiar with the system who can help those unfamiliar with the system craft characters. People who could explain PL caps and help build power sets and what not. The code does a good job of checking to ensure characters remain within their points but app staffers would also help by ensuring no PL cap breaks happen on the sheet. They'd also need to be familiar with the coded systems to help code challenged people with apps.
Next would be plot staffers. People looking to run scenes, maybe 1 or 2 a week. They could be general scenes or if you have an idea you want to build on and explore (like a group of mutants or themed heroes or whatever) that'd be fine too. I think it'd be great to have a little bit of both.
I recently did a purge of all idle characters so if you had a character on the game they have likely been @nuked. This was just an attempt to clean up the DB, nothing more. So if you're interested in either of the above come on over and we can chat.
We have a wiki at http://empire-bay.wikidot.com/ and you can connect to the game via muxmadness.com:1200.

Scion: Origins
So the PDF for the first book came out the other day for backers and I've been pouring through it. Man, I really want to love this game. I do. Like to the point where I'd love for it to inspire me to wanna make a MUX using it. For some reason, however, I just can't get on board with it. This is far from a comprehensive review but here are a few of the issues I'm having trouble with.
1: Character creation seems unnecessarily complicated. Choose these paths, prioritize these paths, assign dots according to prioritization...if that's too many dots in 1 skill put it where ever...Same with attributes and arenas. Part of me likes it, it gives a reason for points to be in certain places, and it makes it easy to play a non-scion (want to be a Satyr? Just take the Satyr path instead of a divine path). That's pretty cool but the overall process just seems complex, especially given the more narrative approach they seem to be going for. That said, I have yet to actually make a character. Gonna get together with a few people tonight or tomorrow to try that out.
2: Scale. This is a bigger pain for me. I like it. I think it makes sense and i like how it cuts down on potentially ridiculous ranks in attributes and skills. I just don't like how there is seemingly no mechanical method to assigning scale. In their example it makes sense that Hogzilla is Scale 1 or 2 or whatever it was when facing Sigrun because he's so much bigger than she is. But in the same paragraph they say that Sigrun would be scale 1 when fighting Joe Generic Scion...just because. As far as I can see there are no knacks that set you at Scale 1 in fighting or speed or leadership, it's just decided.
Then there's the scale example chart. According to that being a manager at a 7-11 entitles you to the benefits of, like, Scale 2 in Leadership rolls. I can get behind the c-gen, especially since I haven't tried it yet, but the hand wavy implementation of scale (they even use that phrase when describing how to use scale) really puts me off.
3: I could not find a way to replicate Donnie Rhodes as depicted in the opening fiction in the book. He's not done up as a sample PC and I wanted to see what kind of Knack would be in use for the "universal love and adoration" he receives. Except...there isn't one. I'm a huge believer that you need to be able to emulate whatever you depict in your book using the rules in said book and...well I couldn't. Unless I missed something (which is entirely possible).
So that's my stance on Scion as of right now. I was curious how other people were finding the game? It's better than First Edition, I do think that, at least so far but...still not quite playable. At least based on what I've experienced so far.

RE: Character Information: Wiki or Mu*?
I much prefer it on the MUX with an option for it to be on the wiki.

RE: Whispers in the Dark - A Buffy MUX looking for help
Just a quick update. The massive amount of snow my area has gotten in the past week or so has managed to slow things down for me a bit. Even so things are moving forward. I continue to make progress on the grid. I'm fairly happy with it so far. I have a long weekend ahead of me and I'm hoping to get the grid down and some final troubleshooting accomplished on the character generation system. Once those are done I'll be inviting over those of you who offered to help build some hangouts.

RE: Hogwarts Legacy
@Ghost I'm about 8 hours in and I'm loving it. This is generally not my type of game either(I'm generally more of a combat sports or Dark Souls person). I'm also not a huge Harry Potter fan. I enjoyed the movies and books well enough but only to read/watch them once each. This game, however, has sucked me right in and I can't seem to stop playing.

RE: New Vampire Release
Game Kastle seems to have gotten the codes for your 5E pdfs. If you preordered from them and haven't gotten the code yet I'd drop them an email. I'm psyched to get to reading!

RE: Young Justice / Teen Titans MUX
@bobotron I listed Kyle as a possibility but, really, I don't think he throws the curve off any more than Superboy, Mary Marvel, or Supergirl so I think I'd be open if someone wanted to app a teen Red Lantern or something.
And thanks for the additional characters. They're all going on the list. Right now I'm compiling just a big list of possibilities and I intend to whittle them down later if I move forward with this project.
My initial idea was that the second gen heroes get fed up because the first gen heroes (Superman, Batman WW, etc) refuse to step down and let the second generation heroes step up like they should. In response the second generation heroes create a counter to the Justice League for them and the third generation heroes but there's possible stress between the second and third gens as the second genners start treating the third generation heroes like the first generation treated them. That's a lot of generational garble there and I hope it makes sense. That was just an initial idea though.
This is all just "initial" poking and prodding to see if I can find something that makes sense. I miss DC Rebirth and would like to do something in the DC Universe. With Gotham: Flashpoint coming I think I'd like to do something that doesn't focus on Gotham.
So thanks for the help and the ideas! They are all appreciated.

RE: DC Rebirth
I was unfortunately not able to do the testing I was hoping I'd be able to do yesterday on the game. I spent most of the day in the ER and dentists office after being assaulted by my next door neighbor. Today I'm at work but tomorrow I should be able to fully test the character generation system. Then, depending on how long it takes to find and fix any bugs, I'll either be posting the address tomorrow afternoon or Friday morning.
Thanks!

RE: Pathfinder for Savage Worlds
@Hella Savage Worlds is a great system. The one thing that my players tend to get hung up on is using the deck of cards for initiative. If you're more accustomed to traditional RPGs, that may come as a shock. It can also be VERY swingy thanks to exploding dice and the extra d6 you roll with everything. It can lead to unpredictable results.
Have fun! I think(hope) you'll enjoy it!
