I've posted about this place before and recently posted about an OC game in another thread where some people showed some interest in an M&M game so I thought I'd post about it again. This is a game I've had up and running for a few years now and the population has come and gone...come and gone...etc and so on. At this point it's become one of those things that just exists; it's there, it has a character generation system, it has a grid, and I hang out as a staffer. So if people are interested in M&M 3E and an OC superhero game...it's here.
For the time being that's about it, I make no promises about activity or RP or anything. The game has what the players bring to it. If people are interested in coming on board and helping the game grow, however, I'm more than open to bringing on more staff.
If interested we have a wiki at http://empire-bay.wikidot.com/ and you can connect to the game via muxmadness.com:1200.
I'd love to see something utilizing Dragonlance or Masters of the Universe personally. I kinda get why there are not MotU games but I'm shocked at the lack of Dragonlance games.
Bit of an update here, we're still having a bit of a player lull but we've added some staff and I'm looking to kick off a major TP very soon. The TP is designed to inspire RP and will be centered around Gotham. I'm hoping that it inspires RP on all levels (hero, villain, civilians, PD, gangsters, etc and so on). I think it's going to be a blast.
@Collective I'm also a huge fan of FASERIP. I have 2 game ideas I'm looking to explore, one of them being an OC superhero game and I'm leaning heavily towards FASERIP for that (and Savage Worlds for the other). My one fear is that FASERIP may be so tied to Marvel that people might not be able to wrap their heads around using them for other types of characters. Maybe I'll open another thread to discuss it.
I've recently fallen for Savage Worlds and would love to see something using that. I may eventually bring that to fruition either with an OC superhero game or a gothic horror fantasy game based on Bloodborne/Rippers(or more fantasy like and based off of Dark Souls).
I also always thought Eden Studio had a great system with the Unisystem (regular and cinematic). I've run a few Buffy games and build one based on Armageddon (though I never got enough staff to open it). I'd love to see some Unisystem games around.
@fatefan I picked this game up last year and had high hopes. I don't remember much and I'm at work so can't grab the book but I remember being underwhelmed. The setting was great, character generation was fun, but I found the system overall lacking. At the moment I couldn't necessarily tell you why but I'll dig back into the book tonight and make another post later with more in depth thoughts.
@fatefan Mostly lack of system familiarity and online resources. There are a ton of resources on the web players could access for most of the other systems, not quite as much for SW Supers. SW Supers does have a number of things going for it, however. First, my TT group has been able to emulate any and every kind of super hero using their 4 Color level. Second, we could have an approval free or minimized app process for the Pulp Hero level. Third, it's really not that complicated of a system...once you have it down. It took my group a session or two to fully be on board with it (mostly because of the playing card mechanic for initiative).
Anyway, those are my thoughts regarding SW Supers.
A lot of great points were made in this thread. Gave me a lot to think about. I'm still undecided but I've got a lot to chew on.
If I just did what I wanted I'd probably go with a full on DC Heroes with points and all that but I think that would create a barrier too great for a lot of new players to get past. Tied with that would be Savage Worlds but I think there might be a pretty big barrier for new players there as well. I think I might also have trouble finding staff for these systems.
Next would be Mutants and Masterminds. The advantage of that system is I have a character generation system and grid ready to go. I think the barrier of entry here is lower than the above but it's still a crunchy c-gen system that may be a little wonky in play.
The front runner is FASERIP or a hack of that system. It's easy to pick up and support and I think the barrier of entry is about as minimal as you can get for players and potential staffers.
Not that I'm 100% moving forward with an OC game but it is something I'm thinking about.
@Ghost I actually meant to put that one up there. My group had some fun with it but in the end we just felt that it was maybe TOO generic of a system (most of us ended up rolling a D10 and a few D8s for whatever we were doing). A few people found it pretty difficult to wrap their heads around the stunt mechanic as well. That said I do think the MSHRPG is a viable option for a MUX.
Just curious what people's preferred RPG would be for an OC hero game. In my experience the system has to be weighted on two sides; ease for players to slip into and ease for a coder to create a c-gen system for.
My opinions on each are as follows...
M&M 3: A decent system but I've never felt inspired by it. It often just seems to be a "Ok, we're just balancing that To-Hit and Defense ratio now..." type of a game.
Hero/Champions: This was my go to game when I was in high school along side FASERIP. While I enjoyed the system I feel it's a bit clunky, slow, and a bear to get new players into.
Savage Worlds: I only recently discovered this system but I love it. My gaming group is playing two SW campaigns as we speak (Rifts and Necessary Evil). Using the revised Super Powers Companion there has yet to be a character type we can't emulate. The important thing is they feel like the characters types they represent.
Heroes Unlimited: The Palladium RPG systems have always been a favorite of mine. The only real issue I have with them is how front loaded they are c-gen wise. I don't think it would be difficult to code just tedious and time consuming. It's been so long since I've tried to bring a new player into a Palladium system that I have no idea how well it'd go over.
DC Heroes RPG: Probably my all time favorite superhero RPG. I currently use it for DC Rebirth and I love it to death. I use a more freeform version of the system but it wouldn't be difficult to lock it down to emulate the RPG more precisely.
FASERIP / ICONS: I include the newer ICONS here as it is close enough to FASERIP to be almost a second edition of the game. This was the go to gaming system for my High School gaming group, probably because we could throw a character together in 15 seconds. I love the system but feel it falls short in some areas (namely in the social context).
Other: Aberrant is really the only other system I could think of that would interest me. I've never done a c-gen for it before but I don't think it'd be that difficult really. It's just I always found the game kinda broken. Love the setting though.
Pretty much what the title says. I've recently fallen in love with the Savage Worlds system and have been tinkering with a character generation system for it. Looking for some people interested in trying it out and letting me know what they think. Mostly looking for bugs and for ways to increase user friendliness.
Right now it's just a basic system, I haven't even coded in any of the arcane backgrounds because I don't know what direction I'd want to go in if it ever did mature into a full game. You can select from a number of basic fantasy races, set your attributes, skills, select edges, and balance out with hindrances as needed.
Were it to mature into a more full fledged game right now I'm 50/50 on either an OC super hero game using the Powers Companion or a dark fantasy game (further divided 50/50 between a Rippers/Bloodborne style game or a Dark Souls style fantasy game). Of course these are all just thoughts and fantasies at the moment. It's entirely possible that it goes no further than it is right now.

Thought I'd post an available character update. We had a bunch of characters idle out this past week. Here's a snapshot of our available +roster characters. These aren't the only available characters these are just the easiest to apply for as their +sheets come pre-filled out.
We are in a bit of a player slump so if you're looking for a place with 20+ regular player connections we're probably not the place for you. We do have active RP going on and we're working on some plots to spark interest and maybe turn things on their heads a little bit, however.
The advantage of a player slump, however, is that there are some great characters available for application if you don't mind a more laid back atmosphere. We really do have a great bunch of people at our core and, hopefully, things will be picking up very soon.
Very nice! My wife and I might check it out tomorrow.
Just a heads up to those of you that play there, I had to do a small server rollback this morning so anything done after 10pm ET last night may have been lost. My apologies.
@Miss-Demeanor Oooh, thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to keep that in mind.
Oh, I've noticed some new logins on my server. Just a final word, we do use global chat instead of proximity chat. Like I said, for the past 3 months it's just been 3 people on there.
@Miss-Demeanor That's no joke.
I really enjoy The Ark but I do not think I'd be playing it if it wasn't on a private server. I found the public servers to just not be fun. If you weren't part of a large tribe you had to beg, murder, and pray for any sort of resources...just to have some jerk lead a stampede of brontos through what you have managed to build. It was too much work for not enough enjoyment.
What I love about the private server is that we can tweak things to fit our play style. We have the Annunaki mod installed for some diversity but have toned the difficulty down from max dino level 600 to 240, tweaked day/night, and made taming a bit easier (though even at 3x it just took me almost 2 hours to tame my first bronto...). We also actually have dinosaurs and resources to gather. My wife and I tried playing on a PVE public server when we first got into it and finding something as simple as dodos to kill for meat and hide became just impossible. We went weeks without seeing wild dinos and could hardly build anywhere because people would just lay down a foundation here and there to prevent people from doing just that. It was frustrating as hell.
Private servers? Just plain fun. Except when a wild carno blindsides you and you can't find your body...
@Miss-Demeanor I do. Keep in mind it's really just 3 of us on the server (me, my wife, and someone from my work). The taming aspect of the game kills us. So I modify the taming rate and I've altered the night/day ratio so we have more daylight.
I have a private server that my wife and I play on. I go with a cheap plan ($12/month) so it only supports 25 people but I'd be willing to go in on a MUX server for either. I'd check out Active Game Hosts. They're who I use and I've never had a problem with them.
I also don't mind if people pop onto my private. At least at the moment. We run the Annunaki mod though. If you want a quiet server to just screw around on just look up Kung Pao Pom.
