@surreality No one was shaming anyone for caring about Notre Dame but you tilt at those windmills I guess?? Have to fill the day somehow.

Okay, c'mon, you made a post to discourage people from donating to the Notre Dame reconstruction because something else deserved the money more. Don't pretend that's coming out of nowhere.

how is that shaming people for caring? I care, I thought it was devestating to see ND burning. I posted in another thread 'god I hope so' about the structure of Notre Dame being saved.

Saying don't give your money to this cause that is already funded by rich people when there are poor people who need it more is not shaming people for caring, it's making a suggestion. Don't put your negative interpretation on me.

@Ganymede Apparently all of this came from a comment from the (invisible until quoted) KQ, not you.

ETA: Though, considering the source, countdown to 'no one would have quibbled if a man posted it!' in 3... 2... 1...

        Oh fucking well.

Sidebar: I dont know if someone mentioned this, but despite gold melting/burning at a lower temperature than wood, the golden cross survived (surrounded by a shitload of burnt wood).

I'm no longer a practicing Catholic and very often I find that Catholics tend to streeeetch the rules of what is or is not an actual miracle, but I find this particular instance to be fascinating.

Gold's melting point is at about 1,943 degrees Fahrenheit (1064 °C)

Most types of wood will start combusting at about 300 degrees Celsius. The gases burn and increase the temperature of the wood to about 600 degrees Celsius (1,112 degrees Fahrenheit)

Aha! It was in a different thread. @Aria posted that in RL anger.

That cross pic is fucking glorious.

Because we're not pretending this is a thread about Dead Celebrities:

@Ganymede said in Dead Celebrities 2019:

                Not to unnecessarily politicize,

Was it necessary, though? Was it?

the state of culture and religion in the United States.

The only good thing religion has ever done was give people structure and hope. Give me a minute and I'll come up with the list of harms it has done. But there's one gigantic reason I won't:

People need structure and hope. Without these, there's no chance for any society.

Notre Dame? It is too many things to let burn down, and even I was angry at the mere thought that it might've been arson. (I'm holding onto the belief that it wasn't.)

Like Sparks, I'm angry about the St. Landry situation even though I just learned about it, because no innocent people deserve to have their culture attacked just for being different. Donation: Complete.

I may believe that God is dead (long before 2019), but good people deserve to thrive.

There's a hot political topics thread in the Politics section. How about we take the talk of what Christianity is or isn't good for over there before it gets momentum here?

                  Also, I agree with @Ganymede

                  Pun was unintentional.

Bringing this thread back on course...

                    RIP Georgia Engel

Technically she died two days ago, but since the thread has been completely subsumed by the Notre Dame fire....

He was only 51! He was so young when his star shot up, this is a pretty solid loss for filmmaking. He could've easily had another 25-30 years in him. So sad.

Not to unnecessarily politicize, but the fact that a few French oligarchs came out to fund the project but no American capitalists came out to donate to fix these relatively small churches is telling about the state of culture and religion in the United States.

I strongly disagee. France is perhaps the most stridently secular country on the planet, and I'd be surprised if those oligarchs have been to mass since Christmas. The fact is simply that the US does not have a monolithic religious history like France does, and the US hasn't been around long enough for any one church to acquire that sort of status.

The only American building I can think of that comes close to Notre Dame in terms of representing the nation is the Capitol. Maybe the White House, or the Statue of Liberty. But any comparison is going to fail. That cathedral was built closer in time to the fall of Rome than to America's founding.

For as much as the United States makes a business out of religion, it is interesting to see it quietly ignore the burning of three churches whilst a secular nation like France rallies.

It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with racism.
