Coming in 2016 - Bump in the Night

I love how much this thread shows us how old we all are. Well, except @tragedyjones. Whippersnapper.
-
And lo, there came an update!
The BITN Experience Philosophy
The purpose of XP is to allow for the growth of a player character, as well as to provide an incentive for participation in the game. Character growth should be steady and roughly equate to the activity of a character in regards to participation in plots and utilization of game mechanics designed to provide experience. Experiences should allow a character to grow in their abilities, not be a necessity for them to be effective.
As such, Experience gain shall be minimal but also relatively unimpeded. There shall be 4 ways to gain experience on BITN
-
Approved player characters will gain 1 beat every day
-
Through the methods outlined on page 76 of Chronicles of Darkness, excluding end of session, and any other gains as directed per the rules
-
Through participation and running of plots
-
As rewarded by staff for exemplary OOC behavior or as a game wide reward
Advancement
Players may spend their character’s experience as follows: Any trait may be raised without justification, though no trait may be raised more than once very week (7 days). Certain stats, notably Status and Mystery Cult Initiation, may require a successful vote. All stats begin at their lowest possible level (usually 1, but some merits are exceptions).

Does being friends/TS buddies with staff count as exemplary OOC behavior?
-
@tragedyjones Hm. A couple of questions about this.
First, am I reading it right that everyone will start out with a 1 Int, 1 Wits, 1 Res, 1 Str, 1 Dex...etc? If so, does that include skills? If so, do you have a 1 in every skill, or a 1 in SOME skills? So, essentially, your starting dice pools will range from 3 (with a spec) to 0 (assuming no skill in a particular endeavor)? With, presumably, 2 points of Willpower to boost rolls that you really, really want to hope to make.
If the above reading is close to right, based on what you've said previously, one can assume that plots are going to be mid-to-high lethality? So, anytime one participates in a plot, chances are good they're going to lose their character and start back at Wuss Von Wiener. However, if one does NOT participate in plots, one's character will steadily grow more powerful with minimal risk?
Are you sure that's incentivizing the behavior you want to see in your game?

@Pyrephox
I think maybe she's meaning you have to buy things to 1, then wait to buy to 2, etc. rather than being able to buy straight from 0 to 3? -

That should read: "once EVERY week" I believe

The rules posted were just for post-creation advancement. Everyone will start with the usual spread of traits per the rules. Also, not participating in plots would be a very slow growth indeed at ~3 XP a month.
-
@Bobotron Ah ha! That would make more sense, yes. Also, @tragedyjones, thanks for the clarification.

At 1 Beat per day, you'd get 30-ish beats per month; 30 divided by 5 is 6, not 3. Your math is off; or you've changed it to make it 10 beats = 1 XP.
-
The Beatings will continue until traits improve.
-
I think it's actually a half beat/day or .1xp, but I could be wrong. Cold meds, they fuck with the brainmeats.
-
Ignore my lack of math. Yes a Beat/day would be 28-31 beats a month, or 5-6 experiences per month.

Request of the community: Ask some questions in this thread. Things you would want to know logging on to a new game.
I may not have answers for them yet, but I want to make sure we don't overlook anything. So if there is something you would like to know as a player, ask it here.

I want to know the answer to the question I asked to begin with. Does TSing/being friends with staff qualify as exemplary OOC behavior for bonus XP?
-
@Admiral There are no friends like friends with benefits.

Staff has no friends, and doesn't like TSing.

Half of those things are lies.

Oooh, set it in the late 90's. If I play a character hanging around College Park in the late 90's, yearning for gothy darkness it will be super therapeutic.
-
So, I am working on an IC document which will be a large part of the history of the setting, from a semi-legendary hunter which will serve as a source of IC and OOC terminology. Here comes a small preview:
So, what sort of things has D.B. found?

Not sure if I like the direct movie connection or not, but whoever this mortal is, he's a bad ass to take on 5 vamps, kill 3, and kidnap one
