@Aria I already remove youtube comments from the screen entirely. But I'd be interested to know if Comment Snob worked on other platforms, like Facebook.

      From their overview:

"Filters out undesirable comments from the Web.
Comment Snob filters out undesirable comments from the Web. It comes with support for YouTube by default, but you can add support for many other sites by installing Comment Snob rules. For each rule that you install, you can choose from the following filtering parameters:

      • Number of spelling mistakes
      • All capital letters
      • No capital letters
      • Doesn't start with a capital letter
      • Excessive punctuation (!!!! ????)
      • Excessive capitalization
      • Profanity
      • Filtering on custom words and phrases

Visit http://www.chrisfinke.com/comment-snob/ for more information and for links to more Comment Snob rules."

I literally installed Comment Snob as an extension on my browser. If there's three or more spelling mistakes, it filters the post from view. YouTube is way better now.

    • RE: Critters!

My dog is being a lazy shit right now.

He doesn't chew random stuff while we're out all day, but if there is any kind of food anywhere in the house -- or even anything that might be food, like garbage -- he will find a way to get into it. Locking trash cans. The pantry. The cat food bin. The fridge. The backs of the counters. Inside cabinets. He will find it and he will eat it, to the point that Target has been sending me diaper ads for years because of the sheer amount of baby-proofing we've had to install in the kitchen.

Since he's going to a dog sitter's house for two days this week, I decided to try and curb this instinct by buying him some toys that can be filled with food for him busy himself with.

He is now laying at the foot of the bed giving me sad, pathetic faces as he pretends not to know how to get the treats out of the Kong. Apparently, I should come do it for him.

      ...Really, bud? Really?

My AVOID THE INTERNET TO AVOID AVENGERS: ENDGAME SPOILERS phase has begun.

I flip through Facebook and see "With the release of Avengers Endg-"

If you spoil it for me, I'll make a character on a game, find out who you're playing, and PK you.

At one point, we were seriously discussing going to a midnight showing. After our reception. In our wedding clothes.

My friends decided to buy tickets for Friday night, since too many of them still have work the next day. Looks like the after party is just going to be "some nearby bar", instead.

@Aria The new Hellboy is...all kinds of terribad. However, as soon as you relax into the fact that it's going to be just awful, you can lean into it as an enjoyable bad film. (As long as you're the kind of person who can really enjoy a bad film. I am.) Parts of it were just icky, parts were funny and I kept tilting my head and saying, "Huh. They went there," to myself. That said? I enjoyed the hell out of it because I had negative expectations.

I mean..... I will stop what I'm doing to watch it if Queen of the Damned is on TV and that movie is shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. But it's also shit that speaks to the stupid 15 year old Vampire: the Masquerade player I used to be. It's nostalgic late 90s pseudo-goth shit, so I'm kind of okay with that. I don't object to a bad movie. I object to a boring movie.

@Roz Yep. Especially because while I would say that the character's arc in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ended on a positive note, I absolutely would not say that about the season finale of The Magicians.

There is a message it sends that I also am really not at all cool with, that I don't think they intend, and it's especially heartbreaking to me, and I just... can't.

Yeah. Yeeeeeeeeeeah. Coupled with the end of 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend', which is not at all their responsibility because those shows aren't even the same parent company, let alone the same network....

Aw man, I loved the finale of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. 😞

I did, too. My point was more that with the timing of it ending and the season finale of The Magicians, there seems to be a sudden gap of representation of characters of -- ahhh, a particular type, which is all I think I can say without ZOMG SPOILERS -- who have positive relationships, rich emotional ranges, and are able to create meaning their lives despite the thing as opposed to their usual portrayal. Which is generally depicted as burdensome to others, horrific/a warning, a joke, or villainous. I find this deeply upsetting.

The timing is just really awful re: positive, or even vaguely relatable, representation of characters of a certain type. I am not happy.

Re: The Magicians, I just watched the finale. (I subscribe via Amazon, so I can't watch stuff until the day AFTER it airs unless I buy the whole channel.)

And JFC, I am having a major feel. Yes, it was beautifully done. And yes, the character in question asking what they did at the end totally makes sense for them and their mental process. But I am legitimately really upset about it in a "representation matters" kind of way, and not just because of the specific trope @Sparks is referring to.

I want to have a conversation about this but don't want to post spoilers to the board.

      I think I also need a hug. 😞

My (new) boss changed my schedule recently despite that accommodation having been partially done for medical reasons. I have to be awake several hours earlier than I previously did, and frequently end up leaving work.... at the same fucking time. It is exhausting and the longer the week drags on, the more likely I am to just come home and go to bed. And then waste Saturday just sleeping.

I feel your pain. And I hate this. I hate this so much.

      @Sparks

      A) I remember that announcement and how terribly excited I was! And that it's been several years since without so much as a hint of news or follow-up. The last time someone started complaining about ASoIaF at my office after Googling for Exiles updates produced nothing, I may or may not have whispered a surprisingly low and guttural "You fuck right off" out loud at my desk. Thank god none of my co-workers heard me, because that would be taken very poorly at my office. >.<

      B) If you ever change your mind about that, let me know. I will be largely useless, but I will follow you around making excited puppy faces at you the entire way. And forcibly drag the two other people I know who read those books, so that's at least four!

      @Sparks The Captal's Tower?

      Got it in one guess.

      Ask @Aria about that one...

I mean, Martin's working on a narrative that can be generously described as 'sprawling.' And yeah, he doesn't have what you'd call the strongest work ethic. (He's frequently taken breaks because he's bummed over a sports franchise or a political development. Not casting stones here, my house is spun sugar at best...)

And yeah, he feels like he's under a lot of pressure since the IP he's working on has become a defining Nerd Thing.

      Dude takes his time.

Ohh, god, do not get me started on Melanie Rawn. I've been waiting for that book since I was 13. I'm going to be 35 in, like, two weeks.

I love her work. Love. I would, as I have posted in other threads, play the shit out of a Sunrunner's MU*. And I whole-heartedly agree with Neil Gaiman's sentiments about Martin not owing anyone his creative work.....

But I also don't owe artists my money. If you're going to drag things out, delay series, leave work unfinished, and then bitch about your fans, well. Sooner or later I'm going to run out of sympathy. And stop giving you my money for your other projects.

      Finish your fucking books, Melanie.

@Auspice I drive a 12 year old Saturn coupe. It's not even close to being the sort of tank my Cadillac was, but.... yeah. Yeah, I get you. I tend to be a pretty cautious driver and am fond of leaving a solid amount of space between me and whoever is in front of me. Same speed, but lots of space. If you feel the need to cut in front of me, go right ahead. There's room. You want to swerve into my lane in the space I'm in, while I'm just going straight? Sure. You do you, boo. You'll be at fault and I could use the insurance money for a new car.

I thought I-35 was annoying for people merging at ridiculous moments ('Oh there's half a car-length open? lemme merge on in.'), but the route I take on my new commute is worse.

Been at the new job a week and I've twice now had people try to force me out of my lane by merging in on top of me.

Motherfuckers I have severe depression. I would welcome a severe, life-threatening accident that I am not at fault for. Bring it on.

Stories like that make me miss my Cadillac. Before you go thinking I was all fancy, no. Nooooooo. That car was almost as old as I was when I started driving it at 19. Before I inherited it, it had been "totalled" twice according to the insurance company. It had a solid steel frame and a curb weight of nearly 4,000 lbs. A van hit me once. Not a minivan. A full size cargo van. There was more damage to the van than my Cadillac.

It was like... go ahead, fucker. Hit me. We'll see how this works out for you.

It's been years since I spoke French, but I was following Le Monde obsessively today as it was updating faster than most of the English language news sites today. Provided I've been translating correctly, what we know so far is:

      • Two thirds of the roof, including the spire, have been completely lost
        > - As the spire was directly above the altar, this was likely destroyed

      alt text

Somehow, somehow, the altar survived the spire's collapse.

Small, structurally sound thusly. Also the melting point of gold is way, way higher than the burning temp of wood.

In the case of the altar, I was mostly concerned about the weight of the spire crashing down on the statue of the Pieta. I mean, yes, it's stone, but the spire weighed something like 700 tons. Lead and oak are heavy, y'all.

Not like I have a single dime to donate to anything lately, but ideally if I did? Not sure, ideally both. Neither because of tears shed because churches are burning, and each for very different reasons. There's really zero comparison beyond the surface here.

^ Pretty much this. One is an act of race-motivated terror and should be deplored for the hatred it displays and the fear it caused. The other is a tragic accident that destroyed hundreds of years of history and art within a building that's been a cultural touchstone for millions of people around the world and over the centuries.

They are both awful, awful things that people have intensely emotional reactions to -- for very different reasons. Aside from "churches", they're not the same thing at all. Care about both. I promise you that if I can do it with as much of a misanthropic bitch as I am, you can, too.

I think that it's entirely possible to regard both events as tragedies that induce strong feelings -- in one case heartbreak and in the other rage, at least for me. And that wanting to help in whatever form a person can is a natural, and worthy, instinct. If someone is fortunate enough to give to multiple causes, whatever they may be, good! There are literally thousands and thousands and thousands of problems in this world that need solving. And if they can only give to one, whether its of their money or time or energy or voice, that it should go where their heart and conscience pulls them.

No one can fix everything in this world. There's way more than enough awful shit to go around and finding the greatest or most deserving need doesn't eliminate the rest. So lets not play that game, yeah?
