I personally think that this is a bit of an insult to the ability for adults to act like adults when treated like adults, and expected to act like adults, but this is my take on the entire issue.
To me the really insulting thing is the implied suggestion we can only be adults and treat each other with some civility if there is some rule forcing us to. Or that otherwise we'd all be acting the way of the Hog Pit, all the time.
I really detest that idea.

@misadventure One third of this place's administration is handled robotically, so.

@ixokai said in SunnyJ's Anti-Sexual Harassment Guide:
I just want to say, in light of recent events:
Believe the women.
In most cases it's not even about believing anyone. It's just a matter of taking it seriously the first time around at face value, and acting on it. Simple as that.
In the vast majority of cases the person feeling wronged doesn't first go to staff after shit is already unbearable; they go over with something fairly mild. Maybe someone's been making borderline comments in the OOC room, or is getting a little spammy over pages. Hell, sometimes it's not quite phrased as a complaint per se, but it's more of an FYI thing.
When that happens the correct response by staff is to treat the person coming to them with respect; at that point it doesn't matter if they are right or wrong, if they are victims or just maybe misunderstood a humorous comment or... anything. All that matters is that are upset, and they should never walk away from that contact feeling that they were ignored, or - worse! - that their reaching out was unwelcome.
No matter what comes next, regardless of any other factors, if you are staff and you allow your players to read between the lines that you'd rather they hadn't come to you, you've already failed.
It's not until after this encounter that staff get to actually evaluate the case, gather any further information they feel is necessary and take action as appropriate. But that first step is crucial.

It may LOOK, to many, like there's some overreaching there...
It's good to be ambitious. In fact if Vampire games (and nWoD ones in general) had one common issue in the last couple of years, IMHO, is that they weren't ambitious enough; they were way more concerned with simply existing than innovating or doing anything new and cool. So good for you.
but I feel like, once I get done, and I get more 'deep' info ready to go, I can drum up some staff help. Because that's my one stumbling block right now... it's just me.
You probably already know better but I'll offer my usual advice... don't let too many cooks into your kitchen. Having some cospirators will of course keep you share the burden and not burn out, but you probably want to keep it to a small group of people you know and have worked with well in the past.
You can always get more help in the stuff you can't automate (such as plot running) through XP and similar incentives. People don't need to be staff to run those, and player PrP runners are much easier to control - and 'fire' if needed.
But you're not at that bridge yet, so have fun building it.

If you mean the board as a whole, I am here to argue/chat/theorycraft about games. Posts in non-game threads are mostly asides because like most conversations topics wander around. I am on discussion boards about other topics that interest me as well such as pro wrestling, comic books, sports, and Big Brother (the reality tv show not the Orwellian idea) (Note I don't consider any of those place communities either)
No, that's what I meant. You are here over a long period of time arguing/debating games and other stuff with us. Stuff that interest us, and which interest you, and in the process you keep running into the same people over and over to do it. You might even remember some of us from past interactions with you - we do.
I hate to break this to you man, but whether you like it or not... you're part of what we call a 'community'. Welcome!

RE: Cheap or Free Games!
@jaded Shit, I think I have Heart of the Swarm... and I forgot I had it so I never played it.
#firstworldproblem of the day.
-
RE: Cheap or Free Games!
@jaded I will do, thanks for the heads up.
As a minor correction, it's apparently the desktop version of battle.net that lets you do this (which I can't check until I'm home):
"For a limited time, players who already own Wings of Liberty (as of October 31, 2017) but have not yet purchased Heart of the Swarm will be able to get the latter campaign free by logging in to the Blizzard Battle.net
desktop app and claiming their free Heart of the Swarm gift between November 8 and December 8, 2017."

RE: Cheap or Free Games!
@jaded That's kinda neat for me. I really suck for SC2 multiplayer but I did enjoy the campaigns. I think I had stopped playing at the first expansion.

RE: RL things I love
@bobotron IMHO, just fanservice. If they were anywhere near using characters like that on TV we'd have had the PR machine churning in our nerdy faces 24/7 for months in advance. The casting choices in particular would have been up front and center.
It's just name-dropping.

RE: [Original Supernatural/Vampire MUSH] Houses of the Blood MUSH
To add to the long list of questions, something more fundamental.
What's cool about your Vampire game? If you could have coded, built and impemented 100% of what you can feasibly and open it tomorrow, what would people love it for? How does it stand out, other than not being WoD (which if memory serves it's not)?

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
@thatguythere What you are describing definitely exists in gaming. The transitory nature which makes interaction past the point of 'well, we're playing right now' irrelevant, or even inefficient, is there; I join 5-man groups on WoW all the time, and I don't care who these other 4 people are. I look at their gear to make sure they can pull off the run, but they don't even have names to me; there's a DK tank. If I need to refer to him, that's how I do it: "Hey, tank, nice job!".
Yet in this hobby there are people I haven't played with in years I interact with regularly on MSB. Hell there are people who haven't played in years, period, but who might come back. What's even more important is they do - many of us, myself included, took years-long hiatus and returned, only to find they still had roots around and others remembered them.
That's how it is. In one game I don't even remember you while we're actually still playing, and in another you are a person to me, and I have memories of you.
Your reputation matters, too; that DK tank might be bad (I mean, he's a DK, come on) but it's not like if we group up the week after I'd recognize him. But here, look at our threads... we have long memories. Sometimes for the worse things we did but often for being cool, too. There are folks I'd play with in a second if our paths crossed again, and I'd make no secret of it when I introduced them to others.
I mean your perspective might differ, but I feel community isn't merely important, it's what's keeping me MU*ing.

RE: How do you construct your characters?
@collective At first I know very little. I've got a very vaguely defined idea in my head of who my T8S character is, for instance, and the overall direction I plan to hit the ground running towards, but the rest is a complete mystery to me.
That last part is by design, sort of. I could have probably worked it out in my head better but I've found it resolves more smoothly if it's done organically through his experiences and through running into the people I actually get to play with, in the plots we are involved in.
-
RE: How do you construct your characters?
@collective said in How do you construct your characters?:
Now, after a couple of days, I've got the character's 'voice' in my head.
I envy that. It takes me a few days after I start playing to get the voice down, and then even that's followed by a long, slow refinement.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
@bored Then maybe there is a misunderstanding, because the first person who wanted to have no moderation anywhere was yours truly. That's how I was planning to run the forum when ES handed it over, barring only extreme cases of truly antisocial behavior.
I'm not taking a side, but if I had taken a side then what you are trying to preemptively support would have been it.

For me, I'm still personally not sure how we went from the original discussion about changes in the ad thread to where we are now. It feels like we weren't really consulted, like they assumed a lot more than they knew about the common opinion.
Where are we now? What has changed that you believe not all sides were listened to?
I don't mean to sound defensive but I don't see the fire so I can do something about it. What is the decision being protested?
