    • RE: RL things I love

@auspice The usual interview axiom is that the first party to mention a number loses.

I think that's pretty accurate. The interviewer wants to never 'overpay' you by offering a figure higher than the minimum you'd have accepted, and you never want to mention a number lower than the maximum they're willing to pay.

The moment either party drops a figure that game is over.

@thenomain It looks installed in the admin panel but yeah, even the bbcode doesn't work. I'll look at it tonight.

@collective said in Mutant Genesis (X-Men):

And if that's a given game's policy, that's their business (which is what I said to @Enoch's original policy). But if you want your game's RP to have meaning, then you can't just ignore it whenever a player feels like it.

You know what I dislike in the comics though that I'd also not like in a game? When this happens without getting addressed at all, even briefly, about very recent things.

So sure, it's fine if Spider-man dated Captain Marvel for two issues and then the writer changes so that whole thing is dropped. It's fiiine. No it's not, but I'll pretend it is since clearly I shipped them at the time.

But say something - it can be one panel of Peter thinking "shame that didn't work out but I'm a guy from Queens and she's a space cop". Done. Just don't make it vanish completely - and the same principle applies to a game if there's any kind of a retcon or reset. A quick wiki entry will suffice.

If it's an IC thing which can be addressed in RP not even that is needed. If Carol walks in a room IC and she doesn't even look at Spidey then I can go over and try to pry; no need for a notice of any sort in that case.

Speaking of though, I'll upgrade our forum to the newest version on Friday night at 21:00 EST. The forum will be down for a few minutes while that takes place.

Maybe allow anyone intrinsically tied to a FC the chance to have an OOC chat with people applying for them?

It's not necessary but probably reasonable to give Jean's player the chance to at least know someone's applying for Scott, and be able to give some input on the player, even if you don't want to actually give them veto powers or anything like that.

@thenomain Oh, hrm. It was a plugin, so that'd explain why.

I'll restart nodebb in a couple of minutes to activate it. I think @Auspice wanted a new plugin too so I'll get that one in at the same time.

    • RE: Good TV

      @thatguythere Two things:

      a) You wouldn't eat great pizza (assuming you like pizza, which come on, who doesn't) because a different company makes it than you usually associate with pizza? That's... interesting. 🙂

      b) One way to look at it is that social evolution came from somewhere. There was an episode in, I think, Voyager where someone points out after they considered bending their rules that it was specifically for times like these these rules were made; it's easy to be moral in safe, peace times.

As for Captain Lorca, even for his own time, he's clearly suffering from some sort of massive PTSD and his moral code is seriously skewed, and he's been surrounding himself with others as broken as he is. This is made clear by the horrified reaction his own Admiral had over his actions, successful as they may have been.

I find this kind of debate of ethics and civility against one's own self preservation is an engaging one, and Star Trek is all about such debates. I think there will be more.

Also it bears remembering the show is still brand new, and they spent the first 3-4 episodes introducing the new state of things in ways past shows didn't have to; we started in one ship, now we're in another, we were exposed to the reality of Klingon politics, etc so some time was spent setting the pieces.

TL;DR: Give it another chance, IMHO. It might be different but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

@collective True, but for consistency's sake the fact Iceman used to sleep/be related with both should still be IC no matter who his player is.

Yes, after several player switches this stuff (not referring just to the sexual parts) can get confusing but in a way that's very normal for comics; if you think about it characters who've been running for decades have done a lot of stuff, sometimes very wacky depending on the era, and the latest incarnation just picks which of those they want to emphasize without always explicitly retconning the rest out of continuity.

Either way the power level should only matter for the usual two reasons:

      1. Dick-waving contests

      2. One character taking over plots since they can do everything themselves while others twiddle their thumbs.

But otherwise not all X-Men ought to be at the same power level - that's in fact one of their thematic points; mutations are random. One person can be hideously misshapen but get no real usable perks while another gets to be a muscle-bound invulnerable person who can function perfectly well in real life.

    • RE: Scabard: Useful or not?

@sparks To me the question (which is unanswerable) is whether development will continue or under the same model.

If the Scabard project is abandoned a year from now, or they switch to a subscription model, your notes might be stuck unless there's an export function of some sort.

@wolfs I think given how relationships in comics evolve and change to keep them fresh(-ish) over what is, in many cases, 40-50 or more years of shelf life then we can expect similar things to happen on MU*, albeit in a more accelerated fashion.

So if there's a Scott+Jean at first, and then Jean's player is retired and a new player signs up who prefers her to go with Logan then that's probably fine.

Granted I'm just enough of a purist to at least expect relationships though to go a way comics have already paved or hinted at in the past. I could be in the minority about that part though. 🙂

    • RE: The Basketball Thread

@ganymede I don't see why the Suns would want J.R. Smith though, or what the hell Cleveland would do with three PGs when they already have LeBron running point forward half the time and almost always in crunch minutes. 🙂

    • RE: The Basketball Thread

@tempest Their management is bad. I mean it's bad overall, but basically broadcasting to everyone a player is done with you (and being liable to getting sued by his agent if you bench him for too long) means he has to be traded as soon as possible.

The Suns won't get their money's worth in return for him. Not that Bledsoe is great - he's a good defender and cutter but not a great shooter, and he's 28. That combination means no elite team wants him, and very few building teams will trade real assets for him.

The Bucks and the Nuggets are it. That's not a big market.

    • RE: Character Information: Wiki or Mu*?

@thenomain I don't see a reason it would be exclusive to either. The only reason some information can't be available 'live' (which I assume you mean in-game?) is telnet limitations, but otherwise I'd say they should be both derived from the same data, and display as much of it as possible.

@ganymede Pft, comparing players between completely different eras is futile. You can't do it.

I mean Wilt was a physical specimen for sure in any era, but Russell would be a PF in today's game, and there's no way in hell he could do much to stop a rampaging 230 pounds of muscle prime Shaq backing him into basket.

Source: Kevin Garnett, who said every time he had to defend Shaq in his prime he felt like he was holding up a brick wall for an hour and a half, and the next day he could barely move.
