    • RE: Kushiel's Debut

@GangOfDolls I played KD and left for unrelated reasons (basically my character's friends/cast fell off the side of the world). I know other things happened afterwards but while I was there the game was well made and cared for.

Having said that, I'd say Arx is the cool lords and ladies MU* these days - more active, and good staff. KD is similar, I'd say with more emphasis on TS/romance and less on politics, so pick your poison.

Either way they're both good places to play.

@Gingerlily Everyone screws up. You screwed up less than most, and the fact you can admit it mitigates that a great deal to boot.

      You're okay. 🙂

@Vorpal You remind me of this Teen Titans story a couple of years ago when they had Wonder Girl's mom call her from Athens... in front of a Parthenon-like temple I guess? Surrounded by people wearing togas and sandals?

      Wtf.

@Killer-Klown Or HRing things selectively. So you have four factions but you gut one of them and take out their cool powers without putting anything in its place - so suddenly no one plays there, and that affects affects IC dynamics.

@ZombieGenesis When your character roster becomes available can you post a link please? I'm not sure who I'd like to play but I might be inspired by a list.

When I HRed some Underworld powers (both in Death spells and Sin-Eater powers) I explained why - it might or not have been the right call but I think it's important players know the reasoning behind your actions.

It doesn't happen very often overall though. Things are taken out with no explanations as to why.

@Coin said in House Rules vs Rules as Written:

You should be ready for the inevitable avalanche of disagreement.

You should be able to stand steadfast before said avalanche.

Well, and listen. I mean you might as well - perhaps there's a solution you haven't thought of. Rules should never be in place because you feel you'll look weak if you cave-in when a good point is made, for instance.

      @ThatGuyThere I sometimes think Marvel hates Spider-man. I can't explain it.

They clone and replace him, then they kill him and replace him, in the Ultimate universe they kill him and replace him, they thought-switch and replace him.

Like, is there something we should know guys? 🙂

If there are numbers involved them do the math. It shouldn't feel like anything, you should be able to demonstrate the problem. If you can't or won't do the math, but numbers are the problem, do not house rule it.

      Emphasis mine, of course.

If numbers aren't the problem then my warning isn't applicable.

@Auspice I admit I'm not as inflexible here when it comes to things that don't seem to be going too far - after all it's a game. So if your Spider-man decides to hook up with Captain Marvel instead of MJ (or whoever) because there was a great Captain Marvel player around then I don't mind.

But, say, don't make him start using venomous webs because he's bonded to the symbiote again who's become a serial killer; don't make him switch minds with Doctor Ock who's pretending to be Peter Parker.

      Those are just bad ideas.

The worst reason - and unfortunately, a very common one - is "it feels too powerful".

If there are numbers involved them do the math. It shouldn't feel like anything, you should be able to demonstrate the problem. If you can't or won't do the math, but numbers are the problem, do not house rule it.

I don't care if it's an LGBTQ issue or anything else; if you play Batman, play him like he is in the comics timeline the game is using. Else play your own character.

No, I don't care if you think he should be driving a yellow Batmobile or wield a katana either.

    • RE: House Rules vs Rules as Written

House rules are fine but there should be an explanation as to why they exist; in my experience if there isn't a compelling, well thought-out one - for instance sometimes the only reason has been 'that's how TR used to do it' - then they shouldn't be there in the first place.

Look at it this way, what are the reasons we use published mechanics? It's mostly because they're already known by many players so they're already experienced at them and they've been developed by professionals, right? Well, if we have too many HRs then those factors are invalidated - and I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, only that there needs to be a good enough reason for it.

The other small peeve I have about HRs is they're sometimes not all in a single place but they're scattered over different helpfiles or wiki pages. For example I was going to buy Claws of the Unholy for my Gangrel on Reno when I was told it didn't exist. It's little inconveniences like that.
