      @Autumn said in CoD - Victorian - Penny Dreadful-ish.:

      I'm not sure if it was "a tide of outcry" (the population was never really high enough to generate a tide of anything), but it did indeed go from 1899 to modern. There may have been another game by the same name, but the Spider London Mage game definitely underwent a timeshift. And there was also The Greatest Generation, which probably didn't help with name confusion.

      Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know why the timeshift happened? I mean was Victorian Age not working for them for some specific reason, was it part of the plan to timeshift eventually for thematic reasons or?

      @Insomnia I ported one, Shadowrun Returns. Out of 60 games or so.

      @Insomnia Wow, that's amazing. Thanks for sharing.

      I wonder if it'll work in perpetuity for games common in both catalogues. Like, grab a game on a Steam sale (with DRM) then convert it over to GoG as well DRM-free.

      @mietze I mean we can't turn emotions off since we're not machines (sorry @Ganymede) but I hate giving other people - especially ones I don't care for much - that kind of power over me. If they can annoy me by doing something I have zero control over then I'm not in a healthy situation, you know?

      @Coin A guy today asked me for permission to write a story in which he's using one of my 20-year old characters. When I explained I didn't care he said it'd have bugged him if someone had done it to his characters.

      The thing is though, letting what we have no control over affect us is giving a lot of power over us to other people. And a lot of the drama generated in games like ours could have been broken down to "stuff that doesn't affect us in any measurable way" if not for the fact we allow it to.

      If you want to have a life as stress-free as is possible, do not EVER assume that people are doing things out of spite, or because they don't like you, or because they are trying to make you question yourself and your personality and your choices. This is a foolproof plan to happiness.

      Yeah, basically. The safest assumption one can probably make is that other people won't even think of you at all, either way.

    • RE: Shadowrun: Modern

      It's the mark of a woefully bad setting that there's only one interpretation of how things are or ought to be, only one particular theme and it occupies a very specific, well defined niche.

      Shadowrun is not a woefully bad setting. It's perfectly fine for more than one person to look at it and see different, valid views of how it should work.

      Cat.

      Cat decided having less than 30% food in her bowl wasn't acceptable at 4 am. She came and whined at me until I fixed this atrocity.

      Then as I was drifting back to sleep she was of course gobbling it up like a fool so, as usual, she threw half of it out again. But that made her feel bad! So she came and whined at me to pet her so she'd feel better... at 4:30 am.

      I should surely be sainted since, when I finally managed to get up to my alarm in the morning bleary eyed and stumbling about only to see her blissfully asleep on a couch I didn't wake her up out of pure spite.

      @Lithium I just took a very quick glance through the last couple of pages... I have to agree with someone (I think it was @lordbelh) who pointed out the actual The 100 series was full of some really serious assholes.

      I mean I get it, running into jerks constantly can be grating, but it sounds like this was just not the kind of MU* you'd enjoy - by design.

      @Lithium said in Marvel: 1963:

      This isn't just about SuperMan though, it's about the fact that there are limited plots.

      When there are limited plots, there is a very high chance that there will be an FC involved who can just overwhelm the problem and the OC's have nothing to really shine while doing.

      But again, that's not a new problem in MU'ing. If there are limited plots (there are always limited plots) and there's a level 9 guy there what's the level 5 going to do?

      The real answer is... anything at all. Plots aren't puzzles, they don't get won. It's not about who solves them - or if it is, they are not that good to begin with. What can I roleplay about if there is a character present who can do stuff my character can't? Anything.

      The issue is: I came out to help with all these crises and in the end Superman just punches a nuclear bomb to death and we all go for shwarma.

      But that's been the case in all MU* since forever. Are level 5 characters redundant because there are level 9 characters around?

      You people are making me agree with @Coin so I hate you.

      But if the argument "Superman could solve this so why am I needed?" was valid at all then DC wouldn't be in the business of making any other comics. The guy can solve everything.

      For that matter a vast number of superheroes could solve issues less powerful ones couldn't. There are few enemies say, Spider-man or Daredevil have that Dr. Strange or Thor couldn't handle.

      So what?

      @Arkandel You tell me, go to any superhero game and see if the OC's can be created as strong as the FC's.

      I was talking in general - I've relatively little experience in superhero MU* so I can't say what the norm is. What I am saying is that if we begin with the assertion that OCs can't be as cool/powerful/special as FCs then of course OCs won't be as cool/powerful/special as FCs.

      The way to fix that is to allow them to be.

      1. Have any non-staff PCs been granted the freedom/responsibility to be the inter-faction liaison to perform diplomacy as the player sees fit?

      I can't fathom a reason to play a PC - staff alt or not - who are not free to act as their player sees fit.

      There can and should be consequences, complications and sideeffects, you should obviously consider the theme strongly, but either you control the character or it's an NPC.
