    • RE: Getting Involved (and getting other people involved)

I've very rarely seen issues with someone taking too many liberties with NPCs. When it happened at all, it was when those were established ones (the barman at that Elysium) who had been used often and someone commandeered him to have him do something out of character.

It's a theoretical issue and not a practical one, IMHO. I'd gladly pay the price for the occasional nutball in exchange for extra spice of life in RP, but that's not the hold up.

Seems like a major bummer that so many of you are down on CtL 2nd Edition. Is that a consensus in general or even here?

I've never played Lost in all the years I've been doing the nWoD thing. I might this time, when it's out. I like what I'm seeing.

As I've told @EmmahSue before, I would like the concept of "every player is a ST" in the same way as I like "regular PrPs" in general. It'd be great - and it won't happen.

It's simple - most players aren't like that. That's not to say the average person isn't a good roleplayer, far from it - but the average person is not proactive in any sense of the word. The poses' quality can be good, even great, but they'll be responsive to what's already in place, or in extension of it and they will not try to come up with a fresh of circumstances to kick-start new things.

I would have zero issues with someone introducing new elements to a scene we're all already part of but I wouldn't hold my breath. I bring PrPs up because at least they can be systemically encouraged - you can talk about trading them, incentivizing them, advertising them, hyping them. There are things staff (and other players) can do to make sure more of them happen.

A lot of people don't know what they want ("anyone up to meet for RP?"). You can make them an offer ("sure, were?" "I dunno") but unless it's very specific they won't know either. Sometimes they'll ask for RP, you will make yourself available, and they will change their minds.

But as for bar-and-relationship RP, I don't think it's what people don't want, it's just the obvious thing you can do when nothing else is happening. No spirits around? No Blood? No politics, Wounds, strange artifacts needing figuring out? Okay, let's find a date.

Personally, the idea of meeting up at a place and RPing about nothing is roughly as desirable as logging out - the only qualifier is that maybe I'll run into someone good this time around, instead of struggling to figure out any hooks at all to squeeze something out of the scene than generic poses.

I'm getting tiresome at this point, I know, but the best way to engage people is to throw something on +events and go from there.

Still true, except that part of "what you do with that" is incorporated into your changeling nature as a Seeming.

And this is where I roll my eyes and sigh. With the decision now out of my hands once I choose a Seeming, it limits exactly the kinds of things I like to RP. "Then don't play Changeling" is the logical conclusion.

I think any line of thought where you need to play a certain way because it's the right way, and other ways are wrong, is less about what the game's creators intended and more what self-appointed purists want.

On a tangent: My experience with purists - mileage makes a difference here though - is that they're way more likely to sit in a room and vocalize their strong opinions about the flaws in what other people are doing than getting on the grid to do something themselves.

      To each their own. 🙂

It's not about logic (to me). It's a matter of looking at material meant to encourage us to come up with creative takes on tropes and themes then trying to bind them into some very highly refined stereotypes.

That doesn't mean theme doesn't matter - because it does, a lot - but that whether a character fits within a certain scope usually can't be defined beforehand. Unless a player complete goes off the rails with some sort of major brainfart, a PC might look iffy on paper then you end up seeing them in play and go "shit yes, this is perfect".

My rule of thumb: A great player will make iffy concepts work. A bad player will play iffy concepts trying to pretend they're a great one, and prove the opposite.

It's as if the same source material can inspire characters in more than one ways.

Is it potentially a reserved port on Windows?

Sigh. I just checked my antivirus and yep. McAfee was saying NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT!

So I've been pounding on the knowledge base. They suggest that you add telnet/simplemu to the exceptions under the mail spam prevention.. only that didn't work. So if anyone has suggestions, I'm open to answers!

Right, so here's the fix. Go to the virus scan console. Select access protection. Select anti-virus standard protection. Select prevent irc communication. Add Simplemu.exe (or whatever program) to the exceptions list. Apply. Voila! Connecting.

Alternately, stop using McAfee, because goddamn.

@Sammi It depends on the implementation. I've seen oWoD MU* where having neonate and Elder vampires has worked out... for a while, at least.

So I've a question for you console gamers out there.

Although it won't be imminently, I want a console (our last one was a brand new Wii when it first launched, which gives you an idea of how long it's been...). So I have to pick between an X-Box and a PS4.

I don't play FPS almost at all. I'd love RPGs, RTSs and smaller simpler games to go with that. Which platform would you suggest and why?

This is one of primary worries I had. Witchers are Jedi. Everyone wants to be a Jedi (Funny thing is I never liked Star Wars for Jedi, I always wanted to be a pilot)

Right. IMHO if a setting only has room for one kind of supernatural and they're supposed to be very rare, either it has to be designed around the idea of many people playing the type anyway or to be prepared for anger and drama.

The real solution (where applicable) is to just have different types.

Xbox is up this morning, followed by EA!

My husband already pre-ordered the Pip Boy thing and I quietly roll my eyes. It will still be better than the FPS game that came with creepy night vision goggles and led to him stalking me through the house in the dark. I was secretly glad when they were stolen off his desk at work.

      "secretly"
      "stolen off"
      "at work"

None of these words mean what @Eerie professes.

I was wondering, what is the actual technical limitation in handling Becomings? That is, what needs to be coded before it's possible?

    • RE: Resource Scarcity System

@Bobotron The suggestion I made ... somewhere in these forums a while ago was to go hybrid.

Allow a baseline automatic feeding, something very minimal. Say, 1 vitae/night for vampires - basically whatever it takes for them to break even if they do very little else than simply exist.

Then make resources very dependent on the kind of domain you have access to. That way it's not just the scenes themselves, it's the entire politics around maintaining something that's yours against others who want it, because it's actually useful.

That way if you actually want to spend 3-4 vitae to pump your pools and heal up that lethal damage you might need to make some deals, take some risks, or be proactive beforehand about having access to easier, safer pools of fresh blud.
