Kinda sucks for those people, but I get the decision. Plus, TBH, is there even really enough 'here's what werewolves, vampires and warlocks' do in the books? I'm on book 4 and very little has been provided of what they do on the day to day, except when they're shoulders-deep in Shadowhunter business.

Pretty much. You'd have to be willing to go off-book / off-show. In the books/show, the downworlders only really get involved because of Clary anyway (Luke and Simon).

Warlocks are probably the easiest to tie in, since Shadowhunters often hire their services.

@Apos said in Social Conflict via Stats:

But on the other hand, what about something mostly invisible? A game has a social system that two people in a private scene use, one things it gives authority over another character, the other person is super creeped out but still feels that they would be the bad guy if they don't play along, it leaves a bad taste in their mouth, they log off and never come back, and staff never knows what happens, and the person that even did it probably doesn't even know. Those are the very problematic systems.

But it's not the intent here that I'm disputing. Of course the reason people who want more draconian checks and greater oversight on social rolls are doing it to hinder bad guys. What I'm saying is it doesn't work, and the act of trying to limit these things simply penalizes the good guys.

Look at the worst offenders we've had in our community, the big names, what did they use? Exactly what you mentioned, the insinuation saying 'no' would mean they are doing something wrong. They accomplished that through pages, cherry-picking book passages ("look, Mind 4 means you gobble down that panther dick, it's the rules"), abusing staff connections ("can you prove 100% you were told to gobble down panther dick? No? Liar.") and so on.

In the mean time social attributes in general are barely being used in practice. Sometimes I see social powers, perhaps in certain +jobs for investigations, but their usefulness truly pales compared to their physical equivalents, and part of that is people - reasonable, well-meaning players - are already pretty self-conscious about 'forcing' others to do things, it's being seen as a form of PvP and not creative collaboration using dice to settle outcomes.

That's the real challenge here, I think; the real hurdle isn't to prevent assholes from being themselves because they already have every tool at their disposal to do so. The hard part is to somehow lift the collective cultural taboo we have in employing social rolls in even non-drastic ways (lying/detecting lies, trying to get someone to keep talking and reveal secrets, measure the impact of someone's stern admonishment) during everyday social scenes.

If we go too far in the former direction we'll harm the other too much, IMHO. A system people won't use might as well not exist.

      @Thenomain said in FATE/FUDGE RPGs?:

Aspects are the point of Fate. Without Aspects, Fate is a pretty standard and honestly bland kind of system. You might as well roll 1d6 - 1d6. Woo.

This. If you're not using Fate's aspects using any of the rest of Fate is kind of quirky. There's other simple systems out there that are better suited to the mechanical style you're aiming for.

Evil Hat's stripped-down Fate Core is called "Fate Accelerated", and it's pretty much only Aspects.

I, er, may be a fan.

Me too. I'm a bit irritated that you need to read Fate Core to really understand the contents of FAE, but of the two I'd far rather play FAE in most cases.

If WW can have a better release schedule than OP, I may actually try and force myself back to WoD over Chronicles of Darkness. This makes me cry.

Yeah. It's a lot like the NWoD LARP methodology of 'count up to a total, divide by X, every Y past X is a success'. So we'll see. The mechanical stuff I'm not worried about 'cause code will be calculating everything behind the scenes and spitting out the output.

I'm more looking at stuff that makes things like buffs or debuffs matter, and also buffs and debuffs that aren't just 'I win/you lose' buttons.

A new patch was finished earlier, written with 1.8.6p0 compatibility.

      https://github.com/pennmush/pennmush/issues/410#issuecomment-231619832

Instructions are at the top of the patch. It grants native support for the main commands of MUX channels and such (as noted at the top of the patch).

@Glitch said in RPG Percentile Mechanics:

I'd probably adjust the progression a little on this myself, but I like this system. It makes it a bit more beneficial to be a small bit better than someone and not as much benefit to be tremendously better, but as a quick and simple system, it's pretty great.

Thanks, but it's not really my system, completely. Nothing sucks more than when your Star Blocker muffs something, but that element of randomness places less emphasis on maximizing certain stats. You have a distinct advantage of having a huge score in something, but the fact that you can still fuck up makes the game interesting, in my opinion.

That said, there are Merits/Boons/Advantages that give you a +1 to your rolled score under certain circumstances, so the progression is adjusted that way. But if you roll 3 1s, you're sort of fucked, and that's the way it's supposed to be.

When it interferes with rp rather then facilitates rp is my answer, granted i know that is horribly imprecise and will differ for each game but that is also the truest answer I can think of.

Yep. And it's easy to have a 'too much' situation where adding more helps: eg, you've got obfuscate code, but no code to allow people who ICly can see through it to see through it. Either don't code obfuscate and have everybody roll and ICly behave as if they really can't see it if they fail, or add code to give them as have the right powers an automagic chance of seeing through it.

I once had a character who was shot with a shotgun his first hour on the grid. The PC who shot him said that he wanted to hit him over the head with the gunstock, not shoot him, but was told that the code demanded that he shoot once he'd wielded. I think in that particular case the GM was just being silly, but that sort of thing does happen. It really mucks up the game for me if I'm told I cannot do something that's possible in the imaginary world because the code won't support it.
