I think @Derp especially is over-reacting, though I don't natively disagree with his point. The text we're reading is meant for tabletop, and for tabletop I largely agree with it.
      FOR TABLETOP.

How am I over-reacting when I specifically said:

@Derp said in Consent in Gaming:

Yeah, I don't agree with some of that in the context of a MU.

Emphasis mine. I know that it was written for tabletop. I called it out for being a bad translation to MU.

      Like you did. 😛

      That shit's cruel.

Yeah. Between poor facility condition, barely acceptable health code practices, massive overcrowding, and stuff like excessive heat/cold, I really feel like there's an 8th amendment claim brewing at over half our county jails. And truth be told, I would cheer that on. Most of them are being held pre-trial, but the dockets are backed up so far they might be there for a month or two. It's kind of bullshit.

how easy it is to trick you into it?

...it's not? Given that it is a game, and people are very clearly aware of that.

Like, there are healthy levels of dissociation, and this is one of them. Knowing the difference between fantasy and reality is an important human attribute. This is fantasy. That is not a real person, no actual individuals were physically harmed in the making of this string of ones and zeroes.

There is a difference between getting tricked into something and keeping proper perspective.

What gets my goat is when people try to foist a lifestyle on me that, in their opinion, is "healthier" and "better." Like, get out of my fucking face with that shit, I like soy sauce.

If someone tried to get between me and soy sauce, I would cut a bitch.

Also, yeah, it needs more data to form any real conclusions, but it is a promising start.

Yeah, I'm still not convinced that you aren't reading entirely too much into this, but you seem pretty unswayable in your opinion and just want to hear it in another's voice, so. I think I"m gonna check out of this one.

Hopefully you can find some closure on this topic.

    • RE: Staff scrutiny during CGen

I tend to fall somewhere in the middle as well.

I tend to not be super draconian in my views, but extraordinary stats will need some kind of justification that works them into the character's story and fleshes them out. The higher the stat, the more you'll need. Telling me that you have Strength 5 because you have a gym membership isn't gonna cut it. Telling me that you have Strength 5 because you spent years in a soviet prison where the only thing you could do was fight for your life and try to get as strong as you could? That probably would.

But more importantly, I want to make sure that you're not making something that is gonna clash with the current game. I want to know where your character fits into it. You can make the most badass sheet in the universe but if you don't know what's on it or what it means then you and I have a problem.

I'm open to a broad range of concepts and diverse backgrounds and playstyles, but if there's one thing I've learned lately, the more rope you give someone, the more they'll use that leeway and freedom to try and strangle scenes for everyone else if you find a clashing playstyle.

So I may be a bit more toward the draconian side than others, but I'm cool with that. I'm also not just gonna turn you loose and watch you run amok.

    • RE: Celebrities that are Dead To Us

So, here's the issue that I have with threads like this: Similar to what @Ganymede said, this is all just Court of Public Opinion. Anyone can make claims that someone did something wrong to them, and the more famous you are, the more likely you are to be targeted for exactly that sort of thing. I know that socially, the conversation has shifted to the point where we just sort of automatically take these sorts of claims at face value, but I still think that's a little fucked up.

I'm sure that it's not the popular opinion, but frankly, I do want to see some kind of proof of these allegations before I make a judgment against anyone. There are way too many people who are willing to say incredibly fucked up things for their 15 minutes in the spotlight, and lately our culture has only been rewarding those sorts.

If a celebrity has done something wrong, and there is some proof of that? Fine. If it's just 'someone says that this thing happened to them at the hands of Celebrity Y', I'm gonna take it with a grain of salt.

I'm curious to know what a persons injury would be that couldn't be resolved through a refund? Lost time I guess?

This is mostly for shareholders, who presumably took a loss of around 15% when stocks fell after bad reviews and CDPR stating that the game was not ready for release but they didn't want to delay again. They're claiming that it was material misrepresentation, so their stock losses, basically.

ETA: That doesn't mean that it's the only thing that will get pursued. Attorneys can pretty much voodoo up (pun intended) all kinds of damages. What sticks is another story.

@Wretched said in How can everyone play the same game?:

You cant have one sphere being super draconic in rules and whatever, and another be totally lazy-fair. Coherence.

This one I don't totally agree with. It depends on the sphere, and the rules.

I make mages wait longer times to raise their Arcana than a werewolf to raise their Renown, or Gifts, for example. because there just aren't that many of them, and they do more.

I also require some spheres to write backgrounds, because they're much more essential to me figuring out where the hell they fit in and what they're going to be up to. They get the bonus xp for it, though, so it's not like it's super disparate treatment. By the time we get through the chargen job, you basically write one anyway.

Other stuff, not. Equipment runs the same, mundane spends run the same. Etc. But treating each sphere as if it were wholly identical, when they are not wholly identical, is how you end up with some crazy shit.

What, it's a good thing that people can have their reputations ruined by a handful of accusers with no evidence of their claims? No. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

That's basically what they're saying. They're saying that CDPR lied to investors about the product they were putting out, resulting in substantial losses.

ETA, again: Even though it was very likely those same investors pressuring them not to delay again, so I'm not sure that this is a very meritorious claim.

Personally speaking I found that your Werewolf policies didn't fit me. Which was okay, since that meant it wasn't the right game for me, so at least I didn't have to invest too much in it before I found out.
The thread's title can cut both ways. Nothing wrong with that.

I know. We've talked about this. 🙂 At the end of the day, I have to think of the long-term health of the game, and sometimes that means that the short-term gains that some players want to see don't fit into that. This is why we have a number of games with a number of styles.

But likewise, nobody can claim that I'm anything but upfront about exactly the kind of game that we're playing, and exactly how I intend to run things. Which is really more what I was trying to get at there.

It's important to be straight up, with yourself and your players. Draw lines. Stand firm. Set boundaries and clear expectations, and don't try and couch your meaning in colorful, ambiguous language in the hopes that it appeals to the most number of people because they can interpret it four ways, when you really just mean it one.

they'll all be disappointed when they get on the grid, and their attempts to find RP will spread out your playerbase instead of concentrating it.

Oooh, but this one, and this is relevant to recent RP, too:

Likewise, don't try to condense your playerbase too much, because you will end up with similar levels of unhappiness.

It's a delicate balance. Characters, like their players, need space. If you're telling everyone that absolutely everything they do is public and discouraging them from going after their own private character growth, you're probably doing yourself a disservice. Some personalities clash. Sometimes, you need a small group focused on a thing without constant interruptions from outside sources.

I have seen this go both ways. It's easy to split the playerbase. But it's just as easy to make the game feel claustrophobic and unwelcoming to people who are just not cool with all being pushed on each other.

      It's a delicate balance.

      Some days, like today? Attorneys.

      Short version of the conversation:

Him: There's a problem with your memo.
      Me: Really? What's up?
Him: It doesn't include all of the relevant information.
Me: ...ok, what's it missing? I went through Henry's, MT, and Burns. That's what I could find. (These are legal treatises and the annotated statutes, respectively).
Him: You didn't include the parts about the required notice and these deadlines.
Me: Those only apply to minors.
Him: So why didn't you include them?
Me: ...because it's a legal memo for this case, and your client is not a minor? Nor are we dealing with any parties who are minors?
      Him: Next time, include everything.
Me: . o O (If you want to know everything about everything, then read the goddamned treatises, dude. You have Lexis too. You asked me to write a memo for this case). Alright, I understand. Thanks for the feedback.
