Yet more "don't get raped" rather than "don't rape." Charming.

You know, I honestly do not understand why this sentiment is problematic.

Do we think that rapists don't know that rape is bad? Or that putting a headline in a newspaper somewhere between 'Hey, it would be super nice if...' and 'Knock it the fuck off...' is gonna somehow deter them from doing so?

But for the people worried about such things, there are certainly steps they can take to make it harder for the would-be predators. Which frankly seems like the more effective route.

If stern rebukes were an effective deterrent we would have been doing that already.

What's to be uncertain about the idea two people can be in the same scene but only one of them likes to file aspirations about it afterwards?

Because that's a part of the advancement system, the same as plot xp. It's not 'tedious extra step', it is 'basic mechanic of the game system'.

Basically, it's an important part of the game, just like advancing through plots and ST'd scenes would be, so I'm not sure that I want to reward people for not engaging with it.

WoD Mushes that I know of:

      • Fallcoast
      • City of Hope
      • Liberation
      • Modern Nights

Given that you said 'everything for everyone' I assume that you are probably not interested in Fallcoast.

City of Hope I have never played on. I have no idea what they're about or what they offer, just that I have heard the name and maybe looked at the website once.

Liberation has some issues in the Mage department, other spheres report they are having fun. @Sundance is HBIC and is pretty responsive to issues, even if I disagree with overall management style. Probably worth a shot.

Modern Nights is open, but small, and I think only offering Vampire and Mage at the moment with some psychic stuff thrown in for flavor, so that might be more to your liking, but you won't find a ton of players there just yet, so you might wanna bring a few of your own.

My point here is that there are players - many - who don't.

I'm not saying that people have to use them. If you refuse, then you refuse, and my options on that are limited. I'm saying that if you refuse to engage with a core mechanic of the game system, then the problem is that you aren't utilizing the rules of the game, not that something extra is being put upon you.

If places want to HR out Aspirations, cool, but it is how the game works until made otherwise. Refusal to utilize them really only hurts you, not anybody else.

You don't get to fix people until they fit your system, though. No amount of explaining why this would be good for them if only will do any good past a certain point.

I'm not trying to "fix people." I merely said that if you are using them as a passive tool, then you aren't using them to good effect, not that you are wrong and broken.

@derp BRB, gotta go earn a black belt before I can put in this Martial Arts skill request.

I mean, you joke, but we've all seen the master of Wing Chun who does the aerial shaolin jump-around nonsense that makes you go 'you did not even so much as google wing chun, huh?'.

I don't expect you to be able to do the things the character can, but I expect you to have done some research on the thing. If you want to be world-class at something, I expect you to know what world-class means. If you have -- example, Athletics 5 with a specialty in Figure Skating and you're telling me that you're an olympic figure-skating gold medalist, then yeah, I expect you to have done some research on it. I don't need you to be able to do a triple lutz, but I expect you to be able to tell me what a triple lutz is. If you're going for a 5 with that kind of a background, I might even expect you to know gasp figure skating rules, and to tell the difference between a triple axle and a triple lutz.

You wanna play an elite-level thing, then I expect you to be knowledgeable enough to portray it. If you don't wanna do that work, then you don't get that thing. It's really just that straightforward. If you want the shiny thing, then you do the work to get the shiny thing.

Also, a black belt is the martial arts equivalent of a high school diploma. It shows that you know just enough not to hurt yourself and can probably be trusted in some basic supervision and instruction. You aren't at the peak of the mountain.

      Just saying.

@derp That ... doesn't sound like any xp justification I've ever heard of.

Could you give an example for a mundane skill and some sort of magical power?

OK, so, sticking with WoD examples, I assume for mundane skills the progression of Novice, Practiced, Competent, Expert, Master. So a justification would ideally look something like this:

      ***Spammy WoD XP Justification***

      click to show

Brawl 2 - Jonny has been taking night classes with his MMA coach for a few months now. While he still ends up on his back half the time, he's developed enough confidence, technical mastery, and muscle memory that he can apply most of the techniques he's been learning consistently and (relatively) safely. Employing a mix of striking and ground fighting, he might be able to hold his own in an amateur competition or a one-on-one bar fight, but he's still relying on his muscular build from his football days more than his technical mastery to tilt the odds in his favor.

Jonny is no longer a novice. He's become practiced in his art, confident in the techniques that he knows, but is inconsistent enough that he cannot be considered fully competent in the system, and the advanced lessons are beyond him at this time.

Maybe also including some logs or something of him using some of his fancy new moves.

Magical abilities, especially for Mage, are the real reason why I started insisting on them in the first place. Because I can't force you to read the book before you play. But I can make damn sure you've read it before I approve you to raise anything. You will not 'just learn it IC'. #SorryNotSorry

I expect you to tell me where and how you're learning it, what it can do, and how it feels / looks / manifests from your character. I want you to show me that you know what this arcanum both can and cannot do. I don't expect you to memorize every possible spell permutation, but I want to know that you know what the Compelling practices are fairly limited, so that you don't try to conjure up dancing dragons of fire with your mighty Forces 1 because 'all you are doing is moving the candle flame that is already there omg!'

This is a ridiculously quick one because I'm at work and can't do a proper one, but something might look like:

***Even Moar Spammier WoD XP Justification***

      click to show

Fate 1 - Samael's Awakening to the Watchtower of the Golden Key flavors his perceptions of the Fate arcanum. Samael sees the workings of Fate as the work of the angels, understanding the destiny of a subject as their place in the Unknowable End Result of the Great Mechanism of the Aether. His mentor, Ganapati, has been instructing him in the Mysteries of Fate.

Knowing - Ganapati's teachings have allowed Samael to reach out with his Supernal Will and draw back basic information about a subject he is examining or a situation he is participating in. By reading the brands of the angels on a subject's skin, Samael can discern what oaths the subject has broken or fulfilled -- broken oaths appear as scratched and corrupted text, rusted and vile. Fulfilled oaths appear to be pristine, and made of precious metals. By examining the position of the Gears of the Great Mechanism, Samael can determine what adjustments need to be made in order to reconfigure the Mechanism in a way favorable to him, or disfavorable to an enemy.

Unveiling - Ganapati has also showed him how to simply extend his senses with Fate and view the Supernal Symbols as it exists around him, gleaning information from what he sees. The sympathies between individuals appear as ribbons of pure red energy, coiled around and between every individual and, occasionally, even pieces of the environment in some way important to their place in the working of the Great Mechanism, angels dancing between them to create and sever new connections. Occasionally, with concentration, Samael can glean information based on the appearance of the divine beings -- a pair of former lovers in close proximity will have a pair of angels dancing between them suggestively, their marble masks hard and mocking, their movements full of tension and revulsion even as they move through their 'romantic' dance.

Compelling - The trickiest of the Practices, Samael has now gotten comfortable with the basics of compelling -- making minor adjustments to the workings of the Great Mechanism, or quietly entreating the angels to act on his behalf in very minor ways that don't deviate too much from how they otherwise might have gone. He might ask them to stand by his side as he completes his task, warding off obstacles and pointing out the path he needs to take. Alternatively, he can choose to trust in his knowledge of the workings of the Great Mechanism, making an immediate adjustment for a small change down the line. Neither method is without risk -- the angels may ignore him, and his knowledge of the Machine is imperfect at best. Abuse of these methods are likely to backfire spectacularly, as angels are not beings to be treated as servants, and the Great Machine's gears are as likely to chew Samael to shreds as alter their course, and direct control of the Fallen World through the workings of Fate is still far beyond his abilities.

Ok, well, here goes I guess!

I don't have a favorite food. I really, truly don't. I know that makes me weird, but I just like anything spicy. I guess I would say that capsaicin is my favorite food, but I am not sure that it really qualifies.

I buy physical books. And then I pirate the digital versions. I don't feel bad about this. My bookshelves look impressive and my books are well cared for, and my notes and hilites are linked on my devices for my own personal use because I need the stuff in my life to be organized and searchable and available at a moment's notice.. Someone got paid. I am not paying you twice.

I believe in white lies. For example -- I need my showers at borderline-unsafe levels of heat for extended periods of time or I don't feel clean. My boyfriend likes to shower together (and no, neither of us like shower sex, it's just talking time in the few moments we have to spare together). My boyfriend does not know that I like hot water, and he is a cold showers kind of person. I probably won't tell him either. He has a lung condition and the steam screws with him. So I relish the opportunity to sneak in hot showers while he is out of the house.

I have two facial piercings, but I work in government in a ridiculously conservative state, so both of them are placed in rather inconspicuous spots where eyebrows/facial hair can cover the marks. I plan on getting tattoos, but I worry that having to wear cloth over them is going to screw them up.

Despite being a MUer, I have never been into MMO's. The feel of them is just wrong. I am currently trying my hand at ESO, and it is so unlike other Elder Scrolls games that I am not sure I am gonna make it very far. But I am trying, because they are the new thing and my friends play. forced smile

I can fold a fitted sheet too. #coventime

I sometimes pick up books on things I find interesting even if they are really obscure. I tend to do well in school because if we had a real life 'Would You Like to Know More' prompt like in Starship Troopers I would slam my hand down on that sucker every time. Between personal interest and school, my kindle has enough random stuff on it that if anyone were to ever actually look at it, they would probably think I was a terrorist. On the page I am looking at, I have a survival manual, Army Field Manual 3-24: Counterinsurgency, Nozick's 'Anarchy, State, and Utopia', a book on Python, a book on Kobudo, a book on Aikido, a book on Statics, a book on Aviation Engineering, and the first book of the Magicians. Yep.

But I think the solution to that is capping XP gains very low, honestly.

This is still one of the things that I think haunted memories got right.

MU's are a not a tabletop. Your character should not advance nearly as quickly in a persistent environment as on a tabletop. XP gains should be a slow trickle, rather than a steady stream.

MU's are built, by design, for the long game in most instances.

Or something of that ilk.

I wouldn't let you buy firearms 3 by going to a shooting range.

I would absolutely let you buy firearms 3 by participating regularly in competitive paintball.

Firearms 1 and 2 is for stationary targets. 3 is where you can hit a moving target consistently and accurately from something greater than point blank range. 4 is where you start getting into professional sniper, and 5 is like -- you made your own gun that you've been firing for 20 years and now it is basically an extension of your body.

If you have only 1-2 days a week you can RP and you know Bob over there, RPing daily, is hitting the XP cap every week and people are making it really obvious ('yeah you'll need like, 20 dice to be able to manage this PRP') that you NEED MORE XP......

Why the hell are you worried about Bob?

I used to be a huge advocate of flat advancement, but it was because I didn't want to fall behind XP-wise. No one likes to feel that way. But when I came to the conclusion that the disparity in XP is largely unimportant on most games, I stopped worrying about it.

XP did not help Wes get the Seneschal spot in Las Vegas. XP did not help Maddy take over a chunk of Portland's night scene. XP did not help Cai become Hierophant on RfK.

      I did that.

The funny thing is I'm not really worried about being behind on XP, or having less XP than other people.

Hell I came in fresh on F&L when your Wes and your Circle were in power as Jehanne and immediately started messing with what was going on, making alliances and making things difficult for the Circle, as my tiny little Jehanne (XP wise at the time at least).

The issue is I do feel bad when I'm not optimising my advancement. When not using the system hurts me.

As I said, I'm 'gamey' enough and 'competitive' enough to want to get the most I can when it comes to game systems.

But Aspirations have literally actually made me decide not to make a character when I got to the part in chargen about setting up some aspirations. I decided not to play instead.

Alright. So, let's say that xp is capped at, say, five beats a week from any source. Plots, conditions, etc.

That means that you don't have to use aspirations, and you can be gamey and whatnot and still not have to worry about this one system. It just means that you have to utilize others more.

      Would that be acceptable?

    • RE: Flight of the Golden Crane

A few updates for the game as we continue moving forward in the first week:

      • The OP system was changed to clarify what may be done with the One Power on our game and how powerful PCs may be. Sisters are now restricted to playing average power levels for this time period, or less. The strongest sisters in the world (perhaps 8 to ten of them are even stronger than average at this time anyway) are busy running the Tower. Sisters will need to distinguish themselves by what they do as characters, and not by whether or not they are stronger in the One Power than other sisters, or by how they might stack up to book or show characters.

      • Several One Power systems were streamlined and simplified.

      • The reasons why Wilders are not allowed as a character type but why weaker Tower Trained, non-Aes Sedai channelers are still available (with an XP spend) has been clarified.

      • Dreamwalkers, Luck Twisters, and Sniffers were added to the page "Special Character Types." They were always available with Advantages; their lack of inclusion on that page was an oversight.

      • The story was changed so that individual Aes Sedai are here on missions they select when they gen up and which will be approved by staff. They are no longer part of a formal delegation. The Heads of Houses Gemallen, Mandragoran, and Jamelle are now far more suspicious of Aes Sedai interference and the default NPC reaction for Aes Sedai starts at "suspicious" or "hostile." PCs are allowed to think or feel any kind of way they want about the Aes Sedai, of course, but the climate here still largely reflects Hawkwing's attitudes about them, and they have yet to prove themselves as anything other than manipulators. As recently as 53 years ago the former Amyrlin sparked off the War of Consolidation by inspiring nations to go invade Hawking's, at the time, very small, modest Kingdom. That pissed him off and he went on a conquering spree so...lots of people lost out there. Fast forward to today and now you have the War of Succession making life harder for everyone. That can be traced back to Aes Sedai actions too.

      • Several Talents were removed from the Advantages list to place them in line with new rules. A few new Advantages added.

      • There is now a 90 day moratorium on second alts of any kind.

      • The Info menu was getting a little long, so I split it into "Info" and "World." You'll find policy and rule stuff under "Info," though I left the brief theme entry there too. The big, in-depth, world-buildy documents are now under the "World" tab.

      • We're at almost (or maybe now over, I haven't done a head count this afternoon) 20 approved characters as of Day 3!

@Coin said in What game system would you prefer for a big-tent nWoD project?:

This is really the only way to do it. Games that require certain types of activity to gain XP should have a LOT of different means of getting XP (e.g. Conditions, Aspirations, PRPs, SRPs, Auto XP, Votes, Reccs, RS, etc., etc.). The more? The better. Then you set a max amount of XP you can gain per x time period and then you decide how much of that max any ONE source can net you (maybe 50%).
So some people who really like to run huge social scenes that entertain a lot of people might get a lot of their XP from votes, while others who really like to have one-on-one scenes with heav y characterization might get a lot of reccs, while still others who like to game Conditions and Aspirations can do that, and still others who really like to be in all the PRPs and SRPs can get Xp from that, etc., etc.
Create systems for people to get XP from a BUNCH of different ways so that they don't feel overly tethered to a single system, and then limit how much they can get from any one.

FWIW, I don't disagree with you. My point was mainly for Livia, re: the game-ness and optimization stuff. In a game with unlimited xp, sure. They aren't fun for her and she doesn't want to do them. She doesn't have to, and in a capped system, she isn't losing out.

In an uncapped system -- I dunno, man. You either use them or you don't? shrug But I've yet to see a game that doesn't put some kind of weekly cap on it, given how ludicrously easy it would be to become an overnight god.

Many games right now largely offer aspirations and plots as your way to earn XP.
      That's it.
And if you're in a timezone like @Livia, you don't really get to be in plots. Which means being left with just one single way to earn.

Let me preface this by saying -- I have nothing but ❤ for @Livia. She was literally one of the very first people I played with when I started this hobby in ye olden days, and I have many fond memories. This is not me trying to pick on her at all.

But I don't really know what people want here.

      "You have option A, B, C."

Your timezone doesn't work very well for C, which is unfortunate, but leaves you with A and B.

If you don't like B, and don't wanna do B, then that's fine, but that only leaves you with option A.

That's still a choice you make, and you still have options -- you just don't like one of the options. That means that everything you do has to be in the one thing that you can a) reasonably use and b) choose to engage in.

There isn't anything wrong with that, but choosing to not engage in a game system doesn't mean that the system is broken. It just means you have more work to do in the one area.

What else do people want? There are only so many options you can put out there before it just kind of seems like too much, too easy, you know? Even if it works better for one player, it might not work better for the game, and we all know that players are very good maximizers.

(Conditions are most often earned via plot, so while they exist as an option... they're less of an option for someone who isn't able to be in PRPs.)

They aren't just from plots. I absolutely contest that, as someone who resolves them via jobs regularly.

I don't think they have much meaning outside of plots unless players actually use their upsides and downsides, but they are absolutely a thing.

But my point still stands. Options should not be so numerous that they become trivial, either.
