RE: MUSHgicians elements
I think in any system for Magicians, you need to take into account how the magic they do actually tends to work.
When they're starting out, they can do relatively little on their own. They rely on pre-formulated spells and such, and it takes them a long time to acquire knowledge.
But as they advance, they tend to be able to improvise within their discipline more than they could as a beginner. They can eschew words, gestures, can make shit up on the fly (see: pretty much the entire point of studying at Brakebills South).
So you'll still need a system that can eventually account for that. You could modify mage's system for this. Your Physical Kids can study Physical stuff and eventually be able to improvise in that system, but outside of that they are going to be able to improvise very little, and will need to rely on the tried-and-true spells that other people have formulated. But they should be able to freeform some of their stuff, even if they take a significant penalty for it (the study at BBS was not exactly easygoing, after all).
But improvisation can lead to really cool stuff. Like this.

No one really knows.
But we can make a pretty good guess from spelling and rhymes, and how we know the language evolved. Just like we have a pretty good idea of how Shakespeare sounded (think American trying to fake a Scottish accent).
And Argentine Spanish confuses me. No matter how much I read about that dialect and its quirks, it just sounds like Italian to me.

RE: MU* Server Technology/Features. What do you WANT, what do you SEE?
On my short list of stuff that I would like out of MU/Client tech?
- The ability to support basic image formats (jpg, png, etc). This would be helpful for doing things like pulling your basic Infobox off of the wiki for a character. When I +info Mike, it pulls up his infobox from the wiki, with a nice PB at the top and his most important info at the bottom of that, so that I can see at a glance what I should be paying attention to.
-
Persistent text when I re-open the world. If my computer crashes, I don't want to go and have to look up in the log what I was doing, I want the client to just load that already up to a certain buffer size. That should beconfigurable for user preferences.
-
The ability to split screens and send stuff to a different screen in the same window, like what the Evennia webclient can do now. Should also be configurable re: size and position.
-
The ability for a character to be in multiple places at once. How many times have all of us here been in a situation where we are in a scene with one character, and then proxy that character with a different character in another window? This is common enough that this limitation is just flat-out dumb at this point.

When there is actual punishment, when rapists go to jail for actual jail terms, when judges don't victim blame and people don't ask that rapists not have their lives ruined for 20 minutes of fun, then maybe society can say it has tried to dissuade people from raping, and the onus can go elsewhere.
This is kind of why I intend to teach both of my kids how to protect themselves in the world.
ME: The most effective method of rape prevention to date is teaching women how to protect themselves out in the world.
EVERYONE: YOU MONSTER RARG!
KQ: Do you not understand that the methods in place are ineffective?
Ganymede: Because all of these methods are ineffective I intend to teach my children to defend themselves out in the world.

...I'm out. I cannot even. That is a level of absurdity that ... just... no.

RE: RL Anger
especially because you really didn't -- and still don't -- understand why.
No, I don't understand why this is a bad thing, and I frankly don't believe it is a bad thing, for the reason mentioned in the post above.
IT IS NOT A BAD THING TO ASK PEOPLE TO TAKE STEPS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, FULL STOP.
And if you can't figure out WHY I am baffled that we would even need to explain that in 2018, then I have no idea how to proceed with this conversation.
-
RE: RL Anger
Yes, because the alternative, not asking women to take steps to protect themselves and just seeing how the dice fall, is much more preferable.
Jesus fucking christ, are we really having this conversation?

RE: RL Anger
Ok, well, first of all you are wildly mischaracterizing what I put in that post, which is unsurprising, but alright. I said that you were justified in being suspicious, but that not everything is a sinister plot, and that you shouldn't rush to judgment about motive.
Secondly, what does saying you shouldn't rush to judgment about motives have to do with taking responsible steps to protect yourself? I pointed out, several times, that you were justified in being suspicious.
NOTE: I am -not- calling Mietze a liar, or saying she is wrong -- just that it is only one side of the story, there, and there exists a -possibility- that the intentions are more innocent than they may appear. I fully understand her hesitation in this matter.
So, as noted, while Mietze is perfectly justified in her suspicion and actions, there is potentially another side of the story, here. One in which the man is not The Devil. And I was merely trying to make the point that, sometimes, people can show up and want to get in touch with no moustache-twirling involved.
I said I agreed with your suspicion, and your desire to take actions to protect yourself. In fact, I am pretty sure that I was specifically responding to KQ there, and not you, because KQ's take was All Men Are Evil or something to that effect.
So by all means, cast me as the villain here if it makes you feel better, but it doesn't discount my original point that asking women to take steps to protect themselves is not a bad thing.

RE: What's out there now and what has been attempted? A codebase discussion.
@faraday said in What's out there now and what has been attempted? A codebase discussion.:
hey really do exist, but I agree with you that they're in the minority.
I mean, for posterity, the places that I mentioned were Verizon, Comcast, and the entirety of the Indiana government network (in.gov, which is controlled by the Indiana Office of Technology), as well as the Marion County local government network (indy.gov).
So minority, maybe, but not exactly insignificant names. And it is a viable option for people still.
Just saying that we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

RE: RL Anger
Alright, well... cool then? I mean, by all means, stop trying to help educate women on how to protect themselves from predatory behavior because it puts too much onus on them to take responsibility for their own safety. Let me know how that works out, I guess?
-
RE: RL Anger
Ok, so, I can follow your line of thinking, but I think it has some inherent problems of its own.
"Don't get raped" places the responsibility on the victim rather than the perpetrator.
I agree that this is an issue of responsibility, but I don't see advocating for responsible behavior, no matter what party you are advocating to, as a bad thing. In this case, we would ideally like both parties to behave in a responsible way, but since that clearly isn't happening, why is it problematic to try and advocate for responsible behavior on the part of the people who are more likely to actually follow that advice? Given, you know, the mentality that goes into committing a crime doesn't exactly scream model citizen, and an article in a newspaper is not going to fix that.
From the writing there, it sounds like the ideal article for the other side of this argument would read like, "
Ladies, don't you dare change a thing. Sure, it's a terrible thing, but you aren't responsible for the behavior of others, and nobody should expect you to change behaviors that leave you more vulnerable to predators because girl, it ain't on you. It's on him. You sit tight, we are gonna work on educating the next generation about consent. Don't worry about being proactive because that would just be putting the responsibility on you."
Versus:
"Hey, girl, some shady shit has been going down, and we don't want anything bad to happen to you, so you might wanna watch your back and be careful. Some people can really be monsters."
Which one do you think is gonna be more effective at preventing the actual act?
There comes a certain point where 'how the world should be' stops lining up with 'how the world is' in such a way that it would be irresponsible to ignore, and in this case, we can talk about consent education and trying to get a message out all day long, but your average rapist isn't gonna stop because he read a strongly worded article in the newspaper, whereas informing women of a predator and giving them information on how to protect themselves actually can help prevent rape.

RE: RL Anger
Yet more "don't get raped" rather than "don't rape." Charming.
You know, I honestly do not understand why this sentiment is problematic.
Do we think that rapists don't know that rape is bad? Or that putting a headline in a newspaper somewhere between 'Hey, it would be super nice if...' and 'Knock it the fuck off...' is gonna somehow deter them from doing so?
But for the people worried about such things, there are certainly steps they can take to make it harder for the would-be predators. Which frankly seems like the more effective route.
If stern rebukes were an effective deterrent we would have been doing that already.

RE: Ixokai
So, I didn't really know Ixokai, but I know plenty of people who did, who are currently feeling losses from this.
So I figured -- rather than use this thread to express concern or grief, maybe those of you with fond memories of Ixokai should share some of those favorite moments? It might help. It might not. I dunno. It's a though!

RE: Good TV
Totally just finished binging Sabrina. Loved it.
Also watched Élite, which was more satisfying than I thought it would be. What seems like your average teen drama is more of a murder mystery, except those assholes show you who dies and then tell the story leading up to that, so you have to see the dead person throughout the entire first season and get to know them and like them and be very brokenhearted when it all goes to hell. Also, everyone in that show is deeply flawed, which is refreshing. But they tackle a bunch of issues head-on, such as HIV and sexual orientation and all manner of other things in ways that make it very clear the times have changed, which I appreciate. Watch it. It has a terrible english dub, or subtitle options, unless you are decent with european spanish.
