I do think I'll need to spend a few hours configuring and calibrating my Steam controller for it, though...

You might. I've never used one.

I went through the game as a Cat School witcher, so I built Geralt with an emphasis on dodging and quick strikes. The telepathic strike is especially useful when you're fast, but I preferred to cutty-cutty-chop-chop my opponents.

I don't think anyone should have "repercussions" for accidents of this nature. Intentional griefing via spoilers -- regardless of when it happens in relation to the media in question -- should be swatted (fly swatted, not the other kind omg), though I don't know what kind of consequences are possible/enforceable.

      I concur with this.

I asked -- asked -- that people not spoil things, and, for the most part, that was respected. I never expected to Macho Man Randy Savage Flying Elbow Drop them for it.

What I would like to say is that some of us -- maybe most of us -- don't have the same amount of free time or disposable cash as others. Some of us hover around the poverty line. And I know, as NERDS Y'ALL NERDS we want to chitter-chatter about the things we like, don't like, and argue about incessantly, but let's also try to be considerate of others, in the vein of our recent push to make this place feel more like a community.

@chibichibi I would recommend City of Shadows. It's pretty active, staff and playerbase are both really nice. It is Chronicles of Darkness 2e, you can find the list of books they're using here http://cityofshadowsmux.com/wiki/Books

I also recommend. I'd be more active there if it weren't for work and life.

And like I said last night: I would vastly suggest using a controller over the mouse and keyboard, but that's a preference you'll have to figure out for yourself.

I can't even imagine playing without a controller.

@Thenomain, my tip would be to go light. Go with the Cat School. You may be a bit brittle, but dodging out of combat is your way to get safe and charge up your magic. And having Quen is a good shield when you have to wade into a pitched battle.

This is a game you can sink tons of time into. I think I plunged over 100 hours into it, over the course of 3 or 4 months. It's a completionist's game too: you will be rewarded for finishing all of the quests, and there is a lot to be found.

That the game is fucking beautiful accentuates it.

And to think: this was backed by Warner Bros. Imagine if they had put this much thought into, oh, Batman v. Superman.

    • RE: Good or New Movies Review

@rinel said in Good or New Movies Review:

I understand that in the abstract and agree with it. But the viewers' interactions with Black Americans are limited to Killmonger, his girlfriend (who gets maybe two lines?), and an assortment of children. Killmonger seems to go heavy on the AAVE dialect when he is engaging in "thuggish" behavior. At best, the movie is putting forward some sort of "Wakandan man's burden," where a fictional country must elevate American blacks through advanced technology and intervention. I don't think any of this was the intended message of the film. It just seemed like it was sort of implied in the way that the director emphasized certain things.

I firmly believe that the best scripts for comic book heroes are the ones that focus on the villain and his or her motivations. It is easy for a viewer to understand a hero's motivation, but less so for a villain. Sympathetic villains are wasted where screenwriters neglect to attach them emotionally to the audience. To me, that's what happened here.

I understood T'Challa's struggle immediately. I didn't understand Killmonger's. I think that many black Americans understood Killmonger immediately, and had a stronger emotional attachment to him. I think this was by design. For a viewer like me, however, I wish I had a stronger connection because it would have made the movie so much better.

@ZombieGenesis said in In-Game Systems vs Web Sheets:

So I'm just curious, how important are in-game systems to you as a player? Would you be turned off from a game with a theme that interests you because it uses a web-hosted PDF sheet? Why is that?

I like it when I can access all the information I need from a single window. If I have to use something available elsewhere, it is just a tiny jarring for me. This isn't to say I won't do it, but it's just a preference: us old farts are used to fully-integrated games.

Yeeaaah. Cat School ftw, for me. The bleed bonuses are going to make you so, so, so, so, so happy.

I liked it because I like the strategy of dodging, using magic, and then insta-killing things. Humans are worthless when you're blasting them with Aard.

    • RE: Nightlife RPG vs CoD

@Misadventure said in Nightlife RPG vs CoD:

It is also possible to hijack a system like CoD to catch the different feel off another setting. I dont mean lets play The Originals as if they existed in the WoD, rather use the CoD stats and resolution mechanisms, and use Merits or Powers to track the abilities from the desired setting.

I believe that CoD was made to do this, but I also find it hard to remove CoD from the material it was meant to handle. Morality checks, for example, don't really come into play in a Mass Effect setting.

I like FS3 and Faraday's code because it can crunch through combat quickly. If I had my beans together, I'd finally learn to set up a game through Ares, write up my files, and start that Mass Effect game I've always wanted to.

Unfortunately, I'm old. Life interferes. And as much as I want to immerse myself in a world that is constant and ever-changing, I just don't have the time. I'm not happy with it, but, for the moment, I am content.

      • There is a specific set of clues and information to reveal a specific "solution"
      • Player brainstorming is used to formulate the "solution" behind the scenes

Does one approach appeal more when you are a player vs a staffer/ST?

I think the important issue is the purpose of the mystery.

If the mystery is to advance the plot, then I prefer there to be one or two "solutions" that will aid in moving the plot forward. If the mystery is not essential to the plot, then I prefer letting the players come up with a plan, so that I can save my brainpower for something else.

My example is waaaay back when Peverel had a Duchess(?) be poisoned despite the players efforts. And I am not sure the players really had a chance to learn about the poison or the plot before hand. Assuming they did, the players missed all of it.

I don't mean to be curt, but so what? You can do everything right and still fail. Life is full of events which cannot be prevented.

On that same game, if you will recall, I had an entire plot derailed because of a lucky shot to the BBEG's face. So what? I pivoted.

I am all for player agency, but players also need to realize that, in a good story, you cannot control all of the narrative.

@Kanye-Qwest said in General Video Game Thread:

I haven't played 15, and YET I knew. I knew there was a lot of teenage moping. It's the one constant in FF games. Except for Tactics, which is the best FF game, in which there was a lot of teenage MURDER and SOLDIERING.

I like FF 8 the best because the teenage moping was intentional and a key part of the character -- and the story. (Forgotten orphan kid; mother figure goes batshit and disappears, then becomes the evil sorceress; gets hit on by teacher; finds a pretty girl that likes him; failure to connect makes him lost in the time stream; etc.)

That said, FF 15 doesn't focus on the moping. Ignis is a narcissistic know-it-all; Prompto is what you'd expect from a young sidekick; and Gladiolus is muscley-supercool. I like the party, for the most part.

What FF 15 fails to grasp is a compelling story and dialogue, but I get it -- it's a JRPG, and these things aren't important to them.
