    • NOLA: The Game That Care Forgot

      Wiki: http://nola.orcpie.fun/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
      Game Address: nola.orcpie.fun:2018

Welcome to NOLA: The Game That Care Forgot

NOLA is a game set - perhaps not entirely unexpectedly - in a city very similar to New Orleans, Louisiana. It is in the same geographical location, it bears the same name, and much of the same history. The staff of NOLA love the real-world city, which is why we've chosen to set it in this particular place - but it is based on that city, only, and does not seek to replicate it exactly. The New Orleans of this game is one where you do not need to know all the details (although they certainly help), and if something's slightly off (whether on staff's side or players') we won't stress about it too hard. It is, after all, a game we're playing. If most of the nation wouldn't blink at an inaccuracy in a television show based in New Orleans, we certainly won't stress about it here.

The main theme of our game is one of a melting pot. In New Orleans, the supernatural world doesn't have any sharp lines of division. Where the supernatural ends and the mundane begins is a fuzzy question in a world with mortals who can sense the things that walk in the darkness, read minds, and light things on fire with their brains. In a world where vampires and werewolves claim overlapping territories, alliances and rivalries will form across the lines of the species. Vampires, Werewolves, and Mortals all interact in New Orleans as part of a greater community, bound under the Shadow Accords that govern the expected ways in which alliances and disputes will be handled.

The Spheres available on NOLA are Vampire, Werewolf, Changeling, and Mortal. Mortal characters can be pure Human, Hurt Locker Templates (except Dreamer), Wolfblooded, Ghouls, and Fae-Touched and can undergo Becomings into any supernatural sphere. Human characters who meet certain (not difficult) criteria may be considered a part of the Shadow Accords, and become eligible to take part (relatively) safely in the world of the supernatural, including membership in vampire coteries, werewolf packs, changeling motleys, or mingled cabals.

NOLA is open again. Beast is no longer available. Our wiki is STILL unfinished. We've probably still got bugs. There's probably new ones. And yes, we'll allow Bloodlines...as soon as someone steps up to be a Bloodlines Gremlin and do the research, data entry, and wikiwork. That means yes, we're hiring staff if you want to sign up. Also: we will allow SotC content as soon as someone's willing to go over the work that's already done and finish up the data entry. It's not hard work, I've just got a weird mental block about it and I've been letting it keep me from re-opening for too long. No, we didn't scrap the Accords - they're still there. The NPCs are still in place, we didn't scrap those either. Hell, Beasts are still in the city - they're just NPCs and unavailable for character creation.

TL;DR: A CofD 2e game with Vampire, Werewolf, and Humans set in New Orleans where everybody's up in everybody else's business.

Outside of that, when we already have one UH thread in the hog pit, and one outside of it that is mostly fine until some shill comes along and picks a fight with everybody, and then it gets moved entirely on a whim....

It wasn't moved on a whim. It was flagged for moderation, and was brought to our attention. And then I moved it.

After at least one person WARNED and ASKED you guys to not do it (I think it was @Three-Eyed-Crow?) because of that, I am just facepalming.

Just because one person or a group of people ask for splitting does not necessarily mean it will happen. However, we are working with Three-Eyed Crow to split and move. Like, right now.

Then after doing exactly what they wanted you to do, you threaten to ban me because of a thread title I use.

No, I threatened to do it because your topic was flagged for moderation and clearly (in my opinion) fell outside of what the Mildly Constructive forum was for. The reminder to follow the rules was heavy-handed because I did expect more from you as a long-time poster.

That said, what I did was wrong. It was a knee-jerk reaction, for which there are a myriad of reasons completely unrelated to you. So, it was wrong, and you may judge me poorly for that.

IDK what world you live in, but "LITERALLY WORSE THAN HITLER" is a joke. There's no way for that to be taken seriously. Sure, I could've titled it better. But jesus, it could've been a lot worse, too.

In my world, that is not a joke. I'm pretty sure the same for many others. You could have titled it better. You didn't. Even so, what I did was unjustifiable.

So, about fair moderation now? Your suggestions?

      It's not dumb; it's natural.

Your cat lived for 19 years. That's incredible. I'll bet your cat was a very happy cat.

And since God is a cat, that means something.

I'm pretty sure that Han was involved in just as much action as Luke.

Not to mention that action he got with Luke's sister.

If you do that, I could be wrong, but I suspect you'd severely crippling your potential pool of players to draw from.

      Maybe.

Or you could potentially attract people that aren't interested in playing with "typical" WoD players.

Power > Title every time. Just ask Trump. He thought he was going to have real power but all he got was nice title and a crash course on who really runs the country once he got into office.

So, basically, you don't like playing on a fully-constructed, operational, thematic-to-a-T WoD game.

      @surreality

I think the "there must be backup" standard is problematic. I'm of the opinion that many incidences of sexual harassment aren't backed up by logs or other "acceptable" forms of "evidence." Yet the fact that a player has been sexually harassed on a game is a very valid criticism, backed up or not.

In full disclosure, someone approached one of us three about some place where people could report harassment and such, and yet not face immediate, vicious reprisal about it. We had no idea what we could do. This proposal of a middle-ground between "Mildly Constructive" and "Hog Pit" may fit that bill, so I'm rather interested in it.

@apos said in Questionably viable character types and tropes (tangent from staff ethics convo):

The fault isn't with the people being antagonized. If you're getting into fights and having people treat you like a jerk for your actions, you are probably just really, really bad at playing an antagonist or you don't care how you are perceived. It is not challenging to ask yourself, "Are my actions going to be fun for these particular players"?

      I concur.

I picked Victor Fries on Flashpoint: Gotham for a reason: I love the character. I know he's a loner; I know that he's hard to get along with; but I hope that my take on him will make him popular.

I think Victor Fries is a popular character. I think I can make him into a compelling, interesting character. But I wouldn't have had the opportunity if staff didn't let me. And if I fail at it, well, that's on me.

      @surreality

You may dodge the dichotomy, but that doesn't mean that others do.

I find the entire "-ism" thing to be trite. It isn't novel; it isn't edgy; it isn't interesting. If someone picks "racist" just to have an antagonistic side to them, that's like a girlfriend-in-the-fridge protagonist motivation to me. It's been done, and, frankly, it's kind of boring.

If someone's character is racist or sexist as a side-note or a background bit, then there's no reason why it can't be overlooked or ignored, or made to be just as aspect, not a center-piece. And if a character aspect is not a center-piece, then it can be ignored in interpretation.

Still, people fall back on time-enduring tropes because there's a reason they survive: they are simple, over-valued, and as American as apple pie.

Not to unnecessarily politicize, but the fact that a few French oligarchs came out to fund the project but no American capitalists came out to donate to fix these relatively small churches is telling about the state of culture and religion in the United States.

      Okay.

Dare I ask -- what about Blade Runner: The Darkening?

You know, cyberpunk dystopia, corporate city-states, and replicants trying to round up meta-humans to sterilize or kill them.

      Good place to start?

Not sure if I'd break it up like that, but I'd like to hear and think of more.

@arkandel said in The limits of IC/OOC responsibility:

On a tangent I wonder (some of you such as @Ganymede might be able to answer this) if it's the same for theatrical productions. Do actors root for their characters and try to push for them to win? Do they view directors - which I assume is the closest thing to storytellers - as means to get what they want for those characters, or obstacles to their success?

Darling, actors on stage usually have a script to work with, unless you're putting on The Mystery of Edwin Drood. And improv doesn't really involve characters per se or outcomes that aren't purely consensual.

It's not really applicable to the question of "who wins?"

I mean, it's not even what they do in professional wrestling.

Also, the series is gonna go down in the books as a mess referee-wise. Lots of shit calls that it's making news and those officials have been removed from reffing round 2.

      Bullshit.

Hockey without bullshit calls is known as not-hockey. It's going to happen. You deal with it. Vegas can bitch about how their player shouldn't have been called for a 5-minute major, but that play took out San Jose's top-line center.

That doesn't mean you should bump the severity of the penalty; far from it. It means that San Jose was without one of its better power-play forwards. And they still rattled off 3 goals during the major penalty.

Unfair? Fuck off. The Leafs lost Kadri for a major and only gave up 1 goal. Don't complain about the call; complain about your team's failure to defend as well as the Leafs.

That shit is scary, even when it's 'you just have that kind of address'. That some little shit deliberately sent people to an address... <shakes her head> ...just ugh.

      I know.

See, here's the thing I don't know: why did A use Address? Did he pick it at random? Or did he know Andrew Finch somehow?

Let's say he did know Finch. Did he specifically piss off B, knowing that B would take things too far? If so, did A do so to get back at Finch for something?

These are questions in my mind. If DickBagPlayer threatened to beat my ass, and I told him to go 123 Fake Street, I don't think I should be responsible for what happens if I don't know whether 123 Fake Street is an actual address or not. But if I knew someone at 123 Fake Street, and I picked that address for a reason, then there's some meat on the idea that I should be responsible for what happened. At least, insofar as the law (generally) is concerned.

Regarding your situation, this is why I'm a fan of reasonable gun laws. I'm happy to register and get a license to carry, if necessary. But after this one time we found a tweaker in our backyard, we knew that it was time to stop considering our monthly shooting sessions as only "fun."
