But she's definitely been made worse. In some of the comics, she has had arcs (here and there; they can be rare) with real, actual depth. Some of the justifications for her Suicide Squad costumes... 'We want to show that she's owning her sexuality.' I mean, OK. I kind of get that? But at the same time... Not many women (if any) are gonna go to the theater and think 'girl power' with those outfits. They're going to sigh about yet more fanservice.

If she's been made worse, that's another issue. I'm merely disputing that she was smartly written in B:TAS, or was calculated to be so. It's really not until the second and third seasons that Harley gets out on her own, and, even then, her relationship with Mr. J is less about abuse and more from sheer crazy.

I'd say that she was a good look at a woman in the midst of an abusive relationship who eventually found her way out of it.

She never really gets out of it, though. At least, not in the original seasons.

She wasn't originally calculated to be that way. She was invented to be a foil to Robin: a fluffy, useless character. She changed into something more once Timm and Dini realized her potential, of course.

But smartly? I don't really think so. Relative to Matt Hagen or Victor Fries, she's shallow, in my opinion.

I'm hoping that she ends up better than she's been in the trailers, especially because Harley was originally created and written so smartly in Batman: TAS.

I wouldn't go so far to say that Harley was ever written smartly, but she's one of the more interesting creations out of B:TAS. And, yes, B:TAS made Batman better.

Oh no not the dirty act of people being interested in the potential romance of two characters! HOW AWFUL!!!

People are apparently really pissed about what they did with Batgirl in The Killing Joke, and they've every right to be, from what I've heard.

I have a really good group of people, and the crowd of opinions is diverse enough that I get a lot of opposing viewpoints from different game cultures. It's been interesting so far.

I think the adage of "you can't please everyone all the time" is applicable to the current thread.

The problem with my approach, I suppose, is that I've sought little-to-no-input to date for my game, which allows me to put it indefinitely on a backburner, to my own chagrin.

      Also, CHILDREN.

Looking forward to seeing what pops out.

@Misadventure said in The Descent MUX:

Make a contract of PvP required to proceed, which both must agree to.

This doesn't really solve the problem player I pointed out: the player who is aggressive with her PC, but refuses to accept push back from her targets.

RfK employed a good system for its political system, which was inherently PvP. You had 3 types of PCs: (1) Political; (2) Support; and (3) Civilian. The difference between Support and Civilian were relatively minor, but the important line was between Political and Support.

If you wanted to rule a domain or hold a title, you had to be Political, which meant that you could kill or be killed ICly by other Political PCs. Support PCs could not rule a domain or hold a title, but could support or assist other Political PCs; however, a Support PC could not be killed, and could not kill others.

Anyhow, as it applies here, it just seems that the policies were unclear. I can't see how this game could work unless there were some amount of PvP, lethal or not.

But there are also many that don't give a fuck that you have no interest in PvP, and will take the part of a very persistent aggressor.

Let's not forget the folks that purport to have no interest in PvP, but will take the part of a very persistent aggressor ICly regardless.

@Thenomain said in Making a MU* of your own:

All of the games I know that were more successful than their kin kind of had one thing in common:

      • People were playing on them when they were being built.

Not staff, but players. Hey y'all, come on by, let's socialize and talk about the game and play a little. Sure, you build this, you build that, etc.

The reboot of RfK did this, and it went moderately well, I suppose. But it re-opened without some key things in place, like its political economy system and its converted bloodlines.

I was working with Blackmoth on the game to convert bloodlines from 1E to 2E, as we lost a lot of information from the prior wiki (which was later regained apparently). Staff seemed to be on board with this. We cautioned that it may take time to get everything done. But, as we were working on things, staff started to approve PCs with bloodlines that Blackmoth and I expressly decided would not work on a game like RfK.

If you're going to have players help with things, that's fine, but staff have to give a little authority to those players as well. Or, more to the point, if you've delegated a project to players, don't walk in and interfere with their express, implied, or apparent authority to make decisions. It is very irritating to the people trying to help.

You don't take a random road tour of Pennsylvania; all such journeys are like walking across the River Styx, and thus always purposeful.

@Thenomain said in Interest/Volunteer Check: Major Multisphere Chronicles of Darkness:

The thing about cops is that they enforce the law. That's their job. I've seen it more than a few times where the player doesn't let go of this to enjoy the rest of the game. These people are like the vampires who call for torpor because someone dissed them slightly. It's not fun.

I'm going to nitpick to both concur and to differentiate my own opinion.

The average police officer spends very little time actually enforcing the law. The vast majority is spent patrolling, investigating leads, talking to potential witnesses and informants, and otherwise working as part of a team to bring charges. And then you go and get them, hoss.

Similarly, the average police officer isn't enforcing the law every second of their existence. They could be at the gym, with their family, hanging with their friends, etc. At these times, they are less likely to try and chase someone down and clap them with cuffs, if only because they may not have their cuffs at the time.

So, the fault lays on the shoulders of players: always have, and always will. Most don't have the slightest idea of what law enforcement requires and entails. So, yes, you need to be careful with keeping cop PCs around.

But the same can be said about criminals; that is, most players don't know shit about what career criminals do and go through.

If anything 2E seems more complex to me, but this may just be because I've spent enough time cramming 1E into my head that it no longer seems quite so intimidating.

Magic has always been mind-numbing to me. It's the other 2E mechanics I like -- a lot.

I have to admit: I'm very interested here. And Mage 2E is a bit easier for me to wrap my head around; the magic rules operate similarly to 1E Blood Sorcery.

So, I guess, in conclusion, it's pretty simple if you don't mind not having the best spells. If you want to really get crazy, and do a lot at once, it gets harder. My tip would be to learn which spells you like and just write out the basic formula (like, maybe physically, on paper, next to your computer) and have it on hand if it ever comes up.

My tip, based on my reading of the new magic system, is to make a PC that can do most of what you want them to do without magic, and have magic be the fallback plan or what is used when you have to something spectacular.

It's just aggravating to see people who are usually decent people running around doing their best to spoil fun for others.

I should probably stop intentionally sticking my foot out when people try to walk past me to get to their Pokémon target. I should probably also do the same for people staring at their phones and not paying attention to their surroundings.

But I probably won't. Others hate the fun I like to have.
