I'm a writer. I want a collaborative writing system with some rules attached.
This, 100%. Also, I'm too old to learn fancy new tech things.
However, I do think it would be cool to have a platform like what Ghost is talking about, because I know I've played with some people who could take functions like that and make interactive story with it. I think it's something I'd love to watch others do. I bet it would look awesome and be very entertaining.

(Just kidding: I concur that planning important get-togethers and keeping them short is a good policy to keep for non-sexy-time RP ... and sexy-time RP.)
Do people plan sexy-time RP? Like. "Thursday nights, we bone."

RE: Too Much
Big scenes are a major pain in the butt. I used to put months of RL prep work into them. And even then, I would generally get a 'council' of other players ICly to help out. Sometimes it was really great. Sometimes not so much.
I hate when the answer is 'it depends', but... it depends. When it comes to plot (and not just large social scenes) player buy in is key, I think, to how many people can work well in a big scene. A really engaged group makes it light work, makes it easier to handle more people and make each person come away feeling like they've told a part in a great story.
Edited to add: which brings me to a question that maybe should be a thread of its own but, how do YOU make a group engaged in your plot? Tips and tricks?

RE: Review of Recent Bans
@devrex Oh, I believe what she said was that she didn't want to read our replies (to her last post) not that she didn't read them. But I could be misinterpreting.

RE: Review of Recent Bans
@devrex I empathize with her statement. I used to feel it every time I posted something, that rising dread. It's a learned exposure. I think it'll just take time to realize that it's different now.

RE: Review of Recent Bans
@rightmeow you have a right to your opinion and your experience and no one should ever tell you not to feel how you're feeling. I hope that, even if this site takes a different direction for those who remain, your heart can find healing in knowing you have two options to speak to the people you enjoyed speaking to and hopefully don't have to sacrifice any of the communication you enjoyed, and that this site specifically (it's the only one I can speak to) will welcome your kindness. I wish brighter days for you ahead. MSB will be better for it.

RE: RL-Friendly Game Design
@derp I like the idea of this because it allows everyone to participate in metaplot AND that could lead to more RP all around. You'll have a contingent of folks who won't want to deal with the mechanics of it but you could make the use of the tokens inclusive of RP too. Ie. A player could submit a log of a scene instead, with RP focused on their special area of focus, alongside their token (or whatever the mechanic is) instead of a write up.

RE: RL-Friendly Game Design
Possibly some way to interact with the story/metaplot without engaging in metaplot scenes which might be during your off hours, so that when you do get the chance to RP you still have something related to RP about. I know the action system was popular for that, but I don't know how you would adjust it for scale to avoid burn out. I imagine it would work well on smaller games though.

RE: Positivity Going Forward...
@ghost it's self selection and hopefully a necessary evil of the evolution of MSB that will dwindle with time.

what if the choice that takes a PC mostly off the table is OOC? For instance if you stop being active on my PC's spouse to play an alt with Theno's PC. Do I have the moral high ground to get pissed off?
You stop showing up for our game, but I see you across the room, playing with Theno at another table. I was enjoying our game, you dropped it because you enjoy playing with Theno more than with me. I am going to have feels about that.
@Thenomain is pretty great though. Could anyone really blame you?
More seriously, in the perfect world you'd be able to shrug it off and move on to something else, maybe make some compelling story from it. But in reality, as with most situations, it's usually more complicated than that.

RE: Wikidot has been hacked?
Yeah, the RtA wiki was affected by this. If you need a workaround, I discovered you can use the WayBack Machine (essentially google cache) as it has captured most, if not all, of wikidot.

Mustard MUSH List
Someone posted this on Nerfwrangler's Home for Wayward MU*ers and I thought it might be a handy thing to add here, for those looking for a list of MUSHes.

RE: RL Sads
My grandma taught me how to sew when I was younger and when she went blind she gave her old Singer machine to me. It's a really great machine, works as good as the day she bought it (some 50+ years ago) but can confirm, the manual is full of sexism.

Magic in games
I've been thinking about how magic is done in MUs and the conflicting schools of thought I've heard around that. I'm curious to know from folks where they've seen a magic-heavy game done really well, and what made it work? What were some of the rules? Or were there any?
The most common example I've heard is Mage from WoD and how it's far too OP if it's in a game with other splats, but great on its own.

RE: Road to Amber
I appreciate the extra info on Helix. For those concerned, Simulacrum has said they do have a way to contact Helix for any technical issues the game might face.
-
RE: Road to Amber
@misadventure It doesn't. It's a custom platform designed by a coder named Helix (and a few others, I believe, originally). The MUSH uses the first book as canon, and then events have developed IC from there.

Road to Amber
It's become a bit of a passion project of mine to resurrect Road to Amber MUSH, for the joy of RPing in Zelazny's world. I'd love for folks to come back and inhabit their characters once more, and join me in the endeavor.
Simulacrum has very kindly offered to staff for us.
Hope to see you soon. Good luck remembering your passwords!

Oh sure, magic is great! Until you're wearing your fiancé like an entrail coat. That's NEVER in fashion! shake fist
