Good grief. That's one of those ideas which sound great on paper and are probably horrible in practice.

This is a good segue to my latest game idea.

Eastern European fantasy medieval FS/WoD crossover.

    • RE: Risk

I can think of RPG systems where the mechanics limit risk (you can't PK someone off the bat). Like @Arkandel I was intrigued by the idea that more risk equals more opportunity, but maybe there's a better way to that goal than an ambiguous risk setting.

I was thinking about that yesterday @Arkandel when I was reading the Eternal Crusade wiki and they mentioned their 'dramatic time' (I think the gist is: illogical travel is OK as long as you're not running around with armies), which is functional but not interesting to me game mechanics wise.

So, could a kind of monthly travel budget system work, where every PC gets x number of travel points every RL month, and you can spend those as you see fit, but obviously traveling greater distances costs more points.

    • Risk

While browsing I found a game with this explanation of its risk policy,

      www.realmsmush.org/doku.php?id=risk:

I don't have any experience playing on a game like this so I'm wondering if people who have can comment on how it works in practice?

That could work well with the Reign company system linked earlier. And it'd be a cinch to fast forward the timeline. Sort of like fantasy TGG (edit -- this game, http://mudstats.com/World/TheGreatestGeneration)

So I hear FS, Dark Sun...let me add Thieves World and Black Company. Though I'm getting far afield of high fantasy.

Gritty fantasy is like a black hole 😞

@Patty there is a decent summary here, http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/15/15286.phtml, search for "organizations in a fantasy medieval setting"

(edit: ninja'd by @Rainbow-Unicorn -- it does sound cool btw).

There was a long thread on WORA when SC tanked, I don't remember details more specific than 'drama'. But there should be plenty of folks here who can tell it.

I think it depends on what the players want to do.

I'd like to see an economic/war game for one.

Like FS, but the serial numbers filed off and a theme honed for the game. From what I recall SC had a huge theme/setting. I imagine that's part of the appeal, but it seems more appropriate for the star-spanning game FS can be.

Alright, what about Star Crusade, but high fantasy, high powered, and not Star Crusade?

@Patty, in general it gives me the impression that someone studied all night for their certification in Business Process, fell asleep, woke up and opened a fantasy mu*. The 'rule of fun'. Idlenuking vanilla characters away for a month. The pages (and pages (and pages)) of generic fantasy mish-mash culture and history when the game has never had more than 35 average online (characters -- not uniques!).

That wiki really is a turn-off. I'll +1 giving that a good edit if EC wants more players.

It has some stellar indie RPG designers working on the stretch goal add-ons.

@Misadventure I admit I have an irrational desire to make a game set solely in The Kingdoms of Terror, the 6th book of Lone Wolf.

      @Jeshin said:

      1. I was discussing MUSHes with someone who plays both MUSHes and MUDs and they were commenting that the majority of MUSHes do not use nWoD softcode but the majority of nWoD text-based games are MUSHes. Would that be accurate?

I don't know if this is still the case but there used to be very large WoD games that didn't use any kind of mush at all. I'm blanking on the server type at the moment. IIRC these games had thousands of players and were real-time, but maybe more like IRC than mush.

Am I the only one tickled by how the typo in the first line of the OP is so appropriate for our blessed genre?

At what level does introducing OOC elements make game-play not RP?

      Nail, meet head.

From my experience (and I've played muds and mushes equally since the beginning of time) RP muds measure their RPiness on this weird IC <---> OOC scale because most RP mudders have both feet stuck firmly in actor stance. Mushers are much more various in their RP approach so they rightly understand this is quixotic at best.

    • RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift

@Thenomain, my first thought was Castle Marrach, but d'Image isn't bad either (come to think of it, weren't Marrach and d'Image related somehow? I can't remember).

However, what stood out to me about Usurper and what elevates it above those games is how the coded systems aren't just for +roll'ing or +sheets, but more a part of the game world overall. I guess this is a mud-centric view. I like that sort of simulationist piece, where the simulation isn't simply about your character needing food and water and making +babies, but more a part of the game's theme and setting.

    • RE: One List Entirely In Another List?

Don't think so, you'd have to munge your first list with wildcards to use strmatch and I don't know if that's a gain at all over what you got.
