      I liked Hateful Eight.

But in other news, has anyone else seen 10 Cloverfield Lane yet? Am I the only one who was seriously impressed with that movie? I mean, 3 people in a bunker, can't be that great right? Wrong. Laughs, tears, horror, suspense. That movie has everything. Just the right mix of dread and really, actually funny humor, and then a sudden ramp up into overdrive when it turns out to be not very fucking funny anymore. It even has an incredibly creative, intelligent, believable lead female character.

Yours is the first positive review I've heard about the movie. My horror buff friends who went to see it said it was rather so-so. All of them though agree that John Goodman is a great male lead in the movie.

When I worked at Radioshack as an employee and a manager, I thought it was really awkward when a customer would call me my name out of the blue. Sometimes I suspect they did it because it caused a pause in the conversation - especially if I was answering their questions about a product - and wanted to stop the close.

But I think the most discomforting thing would be the regulars who'd come in and walk up and go 'Hey x, blah blah blah blah," like we are the best of buddies and them using my first name makes me want to help them with more enthusiasm than - you are my customer, here's your shit, now get out. With a smile.

On the other hand I do a lot of phone work now and I don't mind my name being used so much because I will use someone's name to the point of uncomfortability, interjecting it at every opportunity. Because I can.

As of Friday it will have been one year since I stopped drinking soda. It will have been about 6 months since the sudden surprise cravings stopped. I only get them very infrequently now and without the power behind them that they had at the start. This has contributed a lot to the benefits of my health regarding sleeping, energy activity, and weight loss.

      I recommend this for everyone.

I had a problem finding a good map maker that was free for my D&D game and my 7th Sea campaign. I resorted to digging up my old AD&D Core Rules and installing those.

You can probably find a torrent for that and the map maker inside that, while not the best, is good enough to get the job done. The only problem I've had is on Windows 7/8 printing is an issue. You have to print from the print preview and do it from the specific pages.

    • RE: Meanest (But Funniest) Thing You've Done in a Game

Fuck I have so many of these stories:

One of my favorites was a continued session in our Shadowrun game. My friend John was GMing for myself, my friend Phil and their cousin Tommy; Phil and I were playing some pretty standard characters. And Tommy was that one guy who always takes as many of the flaws as he can to get the biggest jump on characters stats that he can right out the door. One of these flaws was an extreme sense of paranoia with no trigger on his wireless reflexes. In this case we are talking about an Ork with the street name of Nemesis, a psychotic street samurai with the people skills of a wood chipper.

Anyway. Having grown tired of Nemesis over a few sessions of half-botched runs due to him being quite dumb, Phil and I spend some of the session convincing him that Ares is going to send their elite assassins after us...and they often disguise themselves as grandmothers or old people because that is so unexpected.

So after dicking around for awhile in which Nemesis goes out of his way to buy a few new guns and a big knife, we go down to meet with Mr. Johnson at a steakhouse in the Renraku Arcology where Nemesis proceeds to try to subtlety threaten Mr. J into giving us more money but cutting his cuticles with his new very large knife.

Further annoyed after a nearly botched negotiation and job interview, and ready to see this character gone, I decide to see if we can get Nemesis killed. So we walk out of the steakhouse I say my character wants to hit up a small shop to check out some of the new legal decking gear that is available and I purposefully begin to scan the crowd. It is at this time, with a glance to our GM, that I mention to Preacher, the other runner, that there is an old woman with a young man walking behind us. So we start acting more alert and ready like this might be an attack incoming. And then Preacher quietly tells Nemesis about the old woman and her companion.

It is at this point Tommy as Nemesis utters "Oh yeah? We'll see about that." and he proceeds to pull out his ork sized Ares Predator and shoots the young kid for his surprise action. Having wired reflexes he is naturally faster than grandma whom he picks up and repeatedly swings like a rag doll into a security window to see which one breaks first.

Naturally this creates a lot of shock and awe with people screaming and running for their lives because some large ass ork is rampaging and murdering people. In the end, Nemesis was gunned down by about 15 Renraku SecGuards in a pitiless attempt to go out in a blaze of glory once he got surrounded, with neither of us getting a second look as we bailed as soon as there was enough panicked people to blend in and get away.

Another Shadowrun game, same people, same GM. Reprising my own character and Phil on Preacher, Tommy has decided to make Toughness...a Troll Mercenary with a take no prisoners attitude who would threaten everyone he disliked with anal fist disemboweling.

The job was supposed to be very simple. Sneak into a small Fuchi subsidiary and steal some paydata and a prototype. Since Toughness was a huge hulking troll that walked around in light security armor, we decided that his job was to sit in in his armored van outside and provide us with overwatch and if necessary a distraction - if we set off an alarm.

The infiltration was easy enough and while we got into a few mild scuffles inside the job was relatively silent and body count free. We had just gotten into the labs and I was getting the data while Preacher recovered the prototype. Things were smooth. It was at this time that the GM informed Toughness that a large UPS truck had arrived out in front of the subsidiary building blocking his view.

Instead of doing something reasonable, like moving the van to a different spot. Toughness instead gets out of his van and gets out the belt-fed Panther Rotary-Assault Cannon, that only the GM knew he had, from the hidden compartment. It is at this time he proceeds to shell the UPS truck. The front of the building. And any pedestrians unlucky enough to be on the sidewalks.

He spent 5 rounds burst fire shelling the landscape and then he got in his van and drove off. Naturally, Preacher and my character barely escaped with the goods. So to lay low Toughness retreated to his low lifestyle hideaway thinking he could go unseen until the matter blew over and he could get his cut. He did not count on us selling him out to Lonestar for a hefty bounty. Toughness died to a mage dumping a world of hurt into him from astral space.

Going way back my family is strongly Dutch and German prior to major colonization of the Americas in my family. And then in the 1700s some of our Dutch family line came to the Ohio Valley and integrated to a limited degree with the Shawnee. Which was further diluted with interspersed marriages with German and/or Irish/Scottish immigrants coming to the continent from the mid 1800s up to World War 2. And somewhere around World War 2 some Greek was thrown in there as well.

    • RE: Characters You Enjoyed Playing

      I had two.

My first was my first MU character actually. An 8th gen Ventrue. He started as the ghoul to the Prince's Childe and was Embraced by her on-grid. And from there became strong enough to control important portions of the city on his own after she was murdered, broker deals with other vampires, and became powerful enough to give the werewolves and any eastern vampires second thoughts about attacking him.

My second was my Barakumin Nosferatu. He was a monstrous graveyard dweller that drew in as many people to interact with him as he drove off. I think my only regret with the character was getting more into the politics of the game than I liked. He had a lot of great interactions.

      @Wizz
I see the first season as done in 3 acts. The first act I enjoyed, that would be to me, episodes 1-3. The second act would be eps 4&5 and I found that to be the best part. And the third act just...deflated the buildup. In the end, Weaver was a great casting choice for a weakly written character who was just not well used. While I did not mind the Elektra thing in the 3rd act, I thought they would have just been better off then making her the focus from the outset. So the series is not horrible but I might give a S2 a pass.

I will add, that I think that JJ was better written in these episodes all around than she did in her flagship season. And Ritter's acting felt less...trying too hard.

All the relevant sheet attributes that need to be explained should be:
Mostly merits or spends pertaining to background like Allies, Sire, and so on. While some of that can be abstracted like Contacts can be - there are some that need further explanation beyond stats on a sheet.

For example, I handled a chargen where a person had a 1 dot Mentor who gave them a 5 dot Relic item on a game. That required more in explanation than just 'he really liked me.'

From what I gathered they were harvesting the dragon marrow. And there were doorways to these dragons lairs that they were using Iron Fists throughout the centuries to seal up. And the Hand was just harvesting these lairs where there are dead dragons and the results ended in the destruction of the cities close to them. At least...that was my headcanon for it. The others wanting to return to K'un Lun was...that was odd. But I think it was a 'want to go back' in a sense of 'want to take it over.' Since the monks would just exile them again.

      @Arkandel
I agree. They did not develop the Black Sky enough. And I remember S1 DD where Matt and Stick fought over murdering a kid who was supposed to be Black Sky too. Ultimately, I was thinking 'Black Sky' was the coffin thing they resurrected Elektra in. But I guess not. I am still not quite sure what 'Black Sky' is supposed to even be short of 'the Hand's ultimate weapon' per Stick in DDS1.

I liked Grim Dawn, I thought it was a fair entry into the Diablo style genre of games with enough things to make it different. The questing and story was fun. And the way the game handles abilities and character leveling were also enjoyable.

I also liked the Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. Buy the final cut if you get it, that game is worthwhile with several interesting classes which really change how you play the game. The story is pretty linear no matter your class like Diablo is, but I found it to be a great game and have an interesting story.

And if you want more shooty in your Diablo style game the new Warhammr 40k Inquisition - Martyr game just released for Early Access. The promotional copy that I have is pretty limited and there are some people playing it on Youtube. I think that it's going to be an interesting entry into the genre and Warhammer 40k seems to fit well with the way they are doing it so far. The drawback...it is Early Access and unfinished so you will be getting something in development. So you have to weigh that carefully like you would any game in Early Access.

ETA: While the Warhammer game is in Early Access I will say that there is enough of a game to dig into and have fun with. I recommend looking up some of the Youtube LPs to get a fair approximation of it if you are interested in this one.

Lastly...Path of Exile is very much inspired by Diablo and that game is huge. There is literally hundreds of combinations for building a character and the game has a lot of promotion going on for it. It is like any other MMO with constant updates and changes that come frequent enough to keep the game interesting.

    • RE: Recipes!

      Who loves cheesecake?!

To start, I want to note this can apply to any kind of cheesecake. Also keep in mind that all temps are in Fahrenheit and are based for a mid-western United States altitude, for those of you who have altitude baking variances to concern yourselves with.

      A Very Simple Crust.

Get a 9" spring-form pan, you need 1/4 cup of butter (melted) and about 2 cups of crushed up crust item of your choice, in this case oreo cookies (with or without the cream filling your choice). Be sure to crush them up well, you don't want them powdered, but you don't want big chunks either. You want a "breadcrumb" kind of 'powdering;. In a bowl, dump the crushed cookies and butter together, and mix them up. Then press into the bottom of your pan, making sure you get a good even coverage, and bake at 375 for 10 minutes.

Now you can use almost anything for a good crust. Just make sure to follow those simple steps and keep in mind the most common ingredient is often graham crackers.

Anyways, once the timer goes off pull the pan out of the oven, and set it aside to cool.

The next step is forming the cheesecake, I'll give you the original base recipe and then tell you how to add the other deliciousness (such as chocolate) after:

      For this you need:
      16oz Mascarpone Cheese (room temperature)
      16oz Cream Cheese (room temperature)
      1 1/4 cups Sugar
      5 whole eggs (room temperature)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (I sometimes use 2, just for zing.)

      Addendum:
      8-12oz of non-sweetened baker's white chocolate

An explanation! Read the following in Morgan Freeman's voice:

A lot of people will often ask 'Why room temperature?' Well, this is important, so I should explain; if the cheeses and eggs are cold, it makes them much harder to mix them together, and for them to incorporate with each other properly. This leads to a lumpy, grainy cheesecake, or one that becomes tough or rubbery. It is quite important to allow the cream cheese, the mascarpone, and the eggs to sit out on the counter until room temperature prior to making.

      Getting on with it!

In a large bowl, mix your cream cheese and sugar together. You can use a food processor if you like, but doing it by hand can often let you eyeball consistency and smoothness easier. Either way mix them until they're nice and smooth.

Add in the vanilla extract, and then add the eggs one at a time, mixing them until they are fully incorporated, before adding the next. You want to add the eggs slowly because you are building a cheesecake here, not mixing cement Once all 5 eggs are added, and everything is smoothly incorporated, add in the mascarpone cheese.

A note on cheese, also read as Morgan Freeman: Mascarpone is a light, fluffy, delicious cheese. it's sweeter and less dense than Cream Cheese, and it's a little fragile.

      So...

When you incorporate the mascarpone, don't beat the hell out of it. Just mix it enough to thoroughly incorporate it into a nice, smooth batter, but don't overdo it. This is another reason why I prefer to hand mix my cheesecake batter as opposed to using an electric mixer or food processor, so I can control how much beating is going on much more precisely. An over-beaten cheesecake turns out kinda rubbery and dense. We want light and creamy goodness.

      Interjection! Different flavors you ask?

But let's say you wanted a different flavor within your cheesecake. Let's say it is white chocolate. It is during this step that you would cut down the amount of mascarpone for an almost equivalent amount of white chocolate. During this step you would preferably use a double boiler to melt down the chocolate and then slowly stir it in with the batter to get a nice even mix in with the rest of the cheesecake. My favorite mix is often 16oz of creamcheese, and an even mix of mascarpone and white chocolate. Never go with more than a 4oz/12oz mix of marscarpone and chocolate though. In my experience it can throw the consistency and flavor of the entire dish off. **Experiment at your own risk. **

Once all your filling is mixed up, turn your attention back to the pan and the crust that's in it.

You need 2 LARGE sheets of aluminum foil, big enough to cover the entire bottom and sides of your springform pan, on the OUTSIDE. Use 2 layers, just to be safe. I always recommend to people to keep a roll of the extra-wide foil around just for cheesecake purposes. Anyway, very securely cover the outside bottom and sides of your springform pan with the foil. You are wanting it so that nothing can get in or out through the tiny gaps in the springform.

Once your pan is foiled, pour in your delicious cheesecake filling on top of the Oreo crust you've made.

Now. Here you may think I'm crazy but: find a large roasting pan that your foil covered springform pan will fit neatly inside of, with a little room all around it. Why? Because one of the secrets to great cheesecake is absolutely EVEN heat when you cook it, so we're baking it in a water bath! So preheat your oven to 325 degrees, Place the foil-lined springform into the roasting pan, and carry it over to the oven once the oven is heated.

Open the oven, place the roasting pan on a middle or lower middle rack, and then fill up a pitcher with nice warm water. Pour that water into the roasting pan till it comes about halfway up the sides of your foil covered springform. Close the oven door, and bake.

Bake cheesecake for 55 minutes at 325 degrees.

Then turn off the oven. DO NOT remove the cheesecake at this time!!! This is important. Leave the cheesecake in the hot oven in its water bath for another 30-35 minutes. This will continue to finish cooking the cheesecake on a very gentle heat, keeping it light and delicious!

When the cheesecake is done baking, it will seem a bit loose still. it will ripple in the center if jiggled.. that's perfectly fine.

      But wait! There's more!

When you turn off the oven and before you let the cheesecake finish cooking in your water bath. It is possible to add a layer of dark chocolate to the cheesecake. Get about 8oz of bakers dark chocolate and once again introduce it to your double boiler, add 1/2 cup and 2 teaspoons of heavy cream and a 1/4 cup of sugar, stirring evenly. When you're ready to let the cheesecake finish baking gently apply this to the surface of your cheesecake and then return to the oven. If done right, the rest of the process should allow not only the cheesecake to finish baking but for the dark chocolate to bond with the cheesecake as an extra layer.

So you've baked it for 55 minutes. Added your layer and let it cool for another 30-35 minutes. Once that is done take the whole apparatus out of the oven, remove the cheesecake from the water bath, and let it cool to room temperature on the counter-top (preferably on a wire rack) before refrigerating. The last step, refrigerate overnight and the next day release the spring form carefully and remove your tasty and deliciously light and creamy cheesecake for consumption!

      Toppings You Say?!

Now you could just buy a squeezebottle of Hersheys (they also have a specific bottled kind you can use for ice cream) and drizzle it over the top of the cheesecake or you can break out that awesome double boiler and make your own (again using baker's milk chocolate, any amount you want)! Drizzling another layer of chocolate over the cheesecake and adding some chocolate sprinkles gives it a pretty appearance. Unless your roommate adds chocolate Cool Whip to the top and makes your masterpiece look like sugary death.

"But Jaded I don't want to add chocolate on top of chocolate! I like berries and shit!"

Well here's a very simple compote. What's a compote you ask? Well Morgan Freeman tells us: A compote is a dessert dressing typically made of fruit done up in a sauce or syrup.

So for a simple compote you want to get about 3 cups of your favorite fresh fruit. If you decide, hey I want to do a medley! then you'll want to split that 3 cups any way you see fit Blueberries and raspberries? apples and pears? peaches and tangerines? bananas and pineapple? Go nuts! But in these instances use 1/2 cup of each.

Once you have your fresh fruit you're going to cut that up and toss it into a pan with 3 tablespoons (tbsp for you recipe people) of orange juice. Turn on your stove and bring it to a medium heat until it gets nice and bubbly. Once you get the little bubbles you want to use a spoon to separate and mash the fruit as much as you can. You're going to do this the next 12-15 minutes, eyeballing it the whole time, and mashing the fruit until you start to get a nice even consistency - and this may require more or less mashing depending on the fruit you use and how well you've cut it up prior.

Experimenters! It is during this mashing and stirring process where you can even try out those spices that often sit on your shelf until they're a hard brick in the bottom of their jars! Ginger! Cinnamon! Bring the heat with some ground chilies! (Ground chilies not recommended for most fruit.) Let your inner Emeril out and Bam it up! You typically want to stick to around the 1/4 teaspoon (tsp) to 1 teaspoon range depending on the spice.

So after about 15 minutes you can take the pan off the stove and move your compote to a jar or container to cool. You want to let it counter cool for about 10 minutes, and then cool in the fridge overnight. Now you have a yummy tasty alternative to a chocolate layer, and any left over compote also works well on waffles, french toast, and ice cream.

      Bon Appetit!
