    • RE: What would you want in a Shadowrun game?

If chargen takes the exponential into account, then sure. I'm fine with it. It ruins my love for lifepath, but that might have a workaround.

The problem is chargen is points. Much like in nWoD, do you go 1/1/1/1, or 4/0/0/0? The former costs 27 XP to get to 4/1/1/1, while the latter only costs 9.

      Edit to show my work.

I agree with every point brought up about skill groups, but just want the karma cost for them to work out 1:1.

Also, instead of priority, I reeeeally like the Lifepath thing, from Run Faster. Just gotta tweak stuff. Tweaking is easier if we commit to linear xp, instead of exponential.

    • RE: What would you want in a Shadowrun game?

RAW costs: Active Skill (new level x2), and Skill Groups are (new level x5); MOST skill groups only have 3 skills, but two of them have 4 skills. So like with nWoD 1e, you are rewarding minmaxing, and... like I said, we (I, really) hates it like hobbitses. Because I feel compelled to not waste any of it by being 'well rounded' when I can just BECOME well rounded at a discount later.

Skill groups are totally fine in every way except karma costs, and maybe code to make them show up on your +sheet.

Karma cost can be fixed with a HR. Code... is tricksy.

      What are Skill Groups?

Cluster of skills. Influence skill group has like... Etiquette, Leadership, and Negotiation... Sorcery has Counterspelling, Ritual Spellcasting, and Spellcasting... There are a bunch. You buy the skill group, and get all the skills. My issue with it is that you can buy the skill group at a discount to what buying each individually would run you. And we hates it like hobbitses.

Edit to list actual things, not fail to remember what was in what.

I'm not saying it would be all in with the boats. But they would play a bigger role than they do in Denver (fist shakes).

Touching again on BOATS for a moment... Set in the Gulf of Mexico? You can get 4 major ports from the nations down there, the Yucatan has a ton of mercenary stuff, Aztlan for blood magic tomfoolery, Caribbean League Voodoo, and the CAS southern charm and gun obsession. Hook cyberhand and patch-style cybereyes upgrades will be free.

@Jennkryst How about Mr. Johnson? Corporate stooges, mission brokers... essentially quest-givers. With the risk that if a run goes wrong it could be traced back to them.

Wasn't the point non-runs? Or am I missing a thing?

@Seraphim73 Sounds fancy. Possibly having different levels of folks, maybe... gangers, prime runners, or whatever. I like the tier system from TR/FC... reward folks but require they do stuff on a schedule or at request. I will think on that some!

Let's brainstorm about them. What other sustainable sources of RP can characters tap into when they're not on runs?

You could be a shop owner/service provider. Repair stuff for people, be their cyberdoc, work for Uber...

Matrix stuff! Games? MMO that shit (could count as runs, though, so maybe not)... Shadowland.

Training. Lasertag, dojo for your martial arts, and so on. Extra important if Instruction skill and skill training times are in use.

I get over this by running runs.

Alas, my days of running 2-3 plots a day are behind me. I can barely finish one in a day. Really, I just hang out on-channel, otherwise.

@Misadventure said in What would you want in a Shadowrun game?:

Are ShadowRunners too cool to have "problems at home", by which I mean their local neighborhoods?

It seems like they could contribute to the balance of power in local media, government, crime etc. Sort of the RPGs Underground or Fates Worse Than Death(1) while not on missions, and ShadowRun while on missions.

      1. A surprising near future game where social relationships and compromise are more likely than massacres.

Hilariously, a lot of the best Shadowrun things do not begin or involve actual shadowruns. Older editions inclued pre-genned rock stars and reporters and P.I.s and stuff. It is why I am pro-non-runner player characters (Doc Wagon recovery team! Urban Brawl! Talismonger!)

Was being semi-facetious. I know that plots wont happen all the time... but! Bar-p is stupid. If I am outside my doss, it is because I am networking for a job, or actually doing a job. It can be a fake job. It can be fake networking with an NPC contact you have. I can only sit in a tavern/pub/restaurant/spaceport/club and sip from a glass so many times before I leave the game because I'm bored.

      Ooooh, boats!

Idea: alternate ID code for different disguises. I hate to be that person, but I'm tired of people ICly knowing my runner's real name and @desc, despite making no roll to do so. Fuck those people.

      Will halp. So verreh much.

Edit to add: will halp with building, statting of npcs and various things like that. I still advocate clearing items and starting from scratch.

Also a thing I forgot to mention: something akin to initiation/submersion for mundanes to do that helps them advance their own stuff. Need time to play SR5 before committing to just what.

      Going down the list....

@tragedyjones said in What would you want in a Shadowrun game?:

      • Chargen Method (Priority, Sum to 10, Point Buy, Modules)

Not priority, because we hates it. Point Buy/Karma is ideal, because it's the closest 1:1 chargen:on-grid thing. Modules, though.... I LIKE MODULES... in principle. It even gives you some tie-in opportunity with others. The issue is that karma costs are non-linear. House Rule them, and we good. Other things to consider: nuyen. Cause gear eats into your potential skillz.

      • Setting (Seattle, Denver, Tokyo, London, etc)

On a boat... A SKY BOAT! HELICARRIER?

      SHADOWRUN: AVENGERS IN THIS BITCH.

Setting isn't terribly important, because Cyberpunk. But it needs boats, for sure.

      • Metaplot (Should there be one?)

      Indeed.

      • Should people be required to BE runners?

No, but there should be restrictions in place for people who do not engage in illicit activity. I feel this is the biggest hurdle, especially for people coming from a WoD frame of reference.

      • How often would you want to go on runs vs have social scenes?

      ALL RUNS ALL THE TIME.

      • In-game Nuyen tracking: Y/N?

Yes. Nuyen makes the world go round. Charge for rent and lifestyle stuff (with the fancy breakdown so you pick all your stuff. SOMEHOW.)

      • What supplements would you include?

Supplements are the hard part. Because a lot of the shit in them is... shit. If it were SR3, I would throw every gun and car you find in the books out, and build them from scratch with the rules in CC or R3R, and then have new pricing for everything. Because book guns, you will find better guns for cheaper.

    • RE: Would a meta-shadowrun game be fun?

@ThatGuyThere Does Chummer for 5e work for the Karma/Lifepath build? Or is it just Priority? We hates the Priority rules, worse than we hates the hobbitses!!

@Thenomain Eclipse Phase is beautiful, because all of the costs for raising things in chargen is 1:1 for raising them with XP. Skill/Atrribute-wise. Morphs and Rep are where it deviates, but I have a plan for that, if I ever get my dream Eclipse Phase MU: Rep and Morphs be handled separately from Chargen stuff (which will have less XP to compensate).

Tangentially related to Eclipse Phase and Shadowrun stuff: what is the preferred sacrifice to the digital gods, to entice a Thenomain to code things?

      @Jennkryst ... <Name> and others are [Name] ...

Not really, as you tell it specifically what to look for. [Public] *, <Random> *, From afar, *, Long-distance to *...

I don't remember if it includes the asterisk in the code, or if it is an option of 'line begins with ___', but you have to manually put in each thing. This, incidentally, will allow you to have different channels go to different windows if you wish.
