    • RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift

      Hey,

      I have been following this thread. I did let both @Jaunt and @Crayon off the promotional lingo line. I did refrain from censoring anything they said (I have a thing about censorship) and I did it because of two reasons.

      1. This board appears to have a culture where gloves off discussion has to take place between an understanding can be made. I was telling another staffer from another game that flash in the pan OOC bitching about IC events is generally healthy. It vents steam and most people get over it pretty quick. In the same vein I decided that allowing my staff to speak openly and freely on a personal level would lead to (hopefully) a progression of the discussion to a new place we could continue on from.

      2. We have been discussing OR and how it works as a community a lot and since Musoapbox (out of all other communities) has been the greatest contributor to message clarification and introspection. I figured if we had to have a messy muddy possibly brand damaging thread this would be the most productive place to do it.

      Bonus 3 - I was dealing with real life stuff and trust both my staff which I think paid off? I feel like the general vibe is improving.

      PS - Hopefully by this weekend I'll have something substantial to share from an OR changes or clarification standpoint.

      No I get that I'm asking if the rhetorical answer is logging is bad or posting logs is bad.

    • RE: Kushiel's Debut

      Hey,

      The Haven people having fun decided to leave Haven for a laundry list of reasons. I'm not sure having once played Haven for a month, a year, or several years somehow makes that person(s) enjoyment of a game irrelevant. I will say that when the group started making character the staff and players were very friendly over newbie channel and aside from a small issue with timezone for some of our group, roleplay is pretty consistent to find.

      Certainly nothing that has happened on Kushiel's Debut is as bad as the stuff happening on Haven, so maybe we're just underwhelmed by any drama going on. That being said Eiseth... Ehisthe... Sunny was one of the staffers who helped get people through chargen in a reasonable amount of time, so it sucks that there was a falling out there.

      @Arkandel

      Over in RPI land it used to be a running gag that you could be a dirty commoner with scars, a missing eye, wrinkly skin and you would still get all the mudsex you can handle if you can RP well. It's a bit more pronounced in RPIs which have a survivalist element so you'd have these grungy travel worn characters and the tressy tress socialites. Yet the objectively better looking descriptions would lose out to these mangy messes of meat when it came to sexy times.

      EDIT - Minor note RPIs don't use played by, so all you had was the description in most case. Some few people would commission character art.

      You can try out TSOS, I can personally help you make whatever you like.

      Netflix standup comedian lineup is strong and has enough variety that regardless of personal preferences you can probably find a good 2 or 3 specials.

      Not sure if Expanse on Amazon is dark, but it's solid. Magicians is on Netflix and Amazon and has some witty dialogue. If you're into some bodice ripping there's Outlander on both Netflix and Amazon. Spiderman enter the Spiderverse is a great and kid friendly. Dragon Prince is a nice kind of Avatar the Last Airbender esque kid friendly adventure on Netflix.

      TS dangerzone aside or maybe TS can be included... I'll try here we go.

      You should never feel guilty about a consistent writing quirk that you utilize between your dialogue. As we have learned from here there is a fair few people who rely on pose/emits to get that information. Furthermore by being consistent in its inclusion when you tweak or play with it that becomes noticable and is a subtle cue you can provide to people you RP with regularly.

      I tend to focus on eyes and manner of speech as my persistent 'filler' or quirk. I like people to be able to imagine what this character may be feeling as they talk even if it's a reserved character because then the non-standard responses stand out all the more.

      Now for the smutty TS if you're vanilla all the time and you suddenly go into a, where do you want my thumb moment. Then they know either they did something really great or something is different about you!

      @Ganymede

      Unpacked!

      Privatizing profits - When the economy is good only those invested benefit.
      Socializing losses - When the economy is bad suddenly the Government (via taxpayers) should come help a company that was all about profit for their shareholders and nothing else before. Suddenly it's in the national interest.

      It is generally deemed a moral hazard to advise one group to do something while doing the opposite. Brokers and retirement funds encouraging retail investors to stay engaged in the market instead of pulling out and re-investing once a bottom has established are themselves getting out of the markets or shifting to new markets but not advising the same to their buy and hold customers.

      @bored

      I mean you can argue that TS is to blame, but by the same token lets say that the NPC played by the staffer wanted someone to do something evil or betray something they have a close connection too. Not all characters or players are going to want to do something objectively bad or betray something they have a connection too. If we're trying to say that TS is just a facet of RP and the majority of the issues with it are player hangups than what would be the difference between those two scenarios?

      Less chatty example

      Example 1 - Player Character sleeps with NPC run by staff and gains advantage. Not all players would write out TS and thus they do not have this opportunity.

      Example 2- Player Character murders their best friends puppy for NPC run by staff and gains advantage. Not all players would want to betray a friend or kill an animal even if using FTB.

    • RE: Punishments in MU*

      @Pandora

      That short essay thing I have only ever seen on Haven and it was such a joke. There are only 2 possible outcomes really from that policy.

      1. Player assigned essay is like lolno or fuck you or some variant of not gonna happen and they remain banned. The essay is basically just a way to ban someone but say oh but they COULD come back if they write an essay and I approve the essay but they won't. It's a neat little trick.

      2. Someone writes an essay which does nothing to actually change the underlying issues and they just do another infraction. Public humiliation and banning are more or less the same thing. Black mark. So even if someone does the essay the odds of them enjoying anything resembling a normal play experience is very low and their chance of relapsing into the actions that got them the punishment is very high.

      Also if someone gave me an essay that's the kind of silly nonsense that would almost make me think VPNing was justified which is what will really happen.

    • RE: Horror MUX - Discussion

      I liked the game a lot when I played.

      Some notes on the concept...

      1. Seasonal stories lead to resolutions, meaning character arcs get completed. This means people can feel 'done' or 'satisfied' with where their concept has come to far quicker than other games which rarely reach the OMG WE'RE ALL DYING WHAT DO YOU DO?! point of a story.

      2. The energy needed to be involved was higher than normal at least I felt it was. Not in a bad way but when a story is clicking it's moving and you need to get on a few nights a week and get in one of the Director scenes or at least a scene RPing about a directors scene. Higher maintenance because again, more is happening, more narrative resolutions are occuring than in other games.

      3. I would day slightly bigger staff, a bit more player control on non-direct plots. Give them the B and C plots to run. I know that they were making these changes shortly after I left due to not enough time so if they ever come back just stick to that.

    • RE: Diversity Representation in MU*ing

      @Sunny

      Modern setting - Singapore , Dubai, Hawaii, Israel

      Fantasy Setting - Deserts, Islands, rainforests

      The closer people put setting environments and locations to popular culture (which is predominantly white) the more adherence you will see to that culture. Placing things in modern and "other" places will promote a more diverse cast of characters. As for people getting into the hobby, iunno MUs are pretty niche as for Tabletop I've run tables with like 1 white person and a bunch of not white people so maybe we need to go poach some adventurer's league and pathfinder society.

      What is the point of a safe space, inclusive, making people feel comfortably if shaming people for their eye color is par for the course?

      As long as people aren't going gasp you're the ONLY poc on the game or GASP you're so exotic and sexy with your shade of X skin than what more are we expecting?

      EDIT - @egg what about scifi shows where blue eyes mean you've been infected with the proto molecule and you're about to become blue paste and destroy the universe?

      Tropes
      Stereotypes
      Something they aren't
      Something they wish they had
      Something they like

      There's more reasons for someone to pick blue eyes that have no racial component than do.

      Everyone should try an RPI.

      Most probable method of killing you. Getting you alone (codedly) in a locked room (codedly) and naked (codedly). Makes all the sexy RP extra exciting. You could get all the different variants of thrusting or you could get one. The only one you'll need to end O_O

      So dog whistles are supposed to be things that only people in the know or people opposing those people actively would know about.

      By definition, your general populace wouldn't know the difference between a dog whistle and code language used by criminals. Yes I'd like to buy some roses, two tulips, and some lilies. The ATF now kicks in my door because they think I just placed an order for illegal firearms where roses are, I don't know, automatic weapons, tulips are handguns, and lilies are grenades!

      Then you have fake dog whistles! Like the OK hand sign that was a 4chan troll that then started being used for realsies. So then it became real... but no one would ever think it was one until seeing it reported and even when it was on the news you're like really? The ok hand sign? I mean I guess, but it seems super improbable. Lo and behold it winds up being used unironically for that purpose (eventually).
