I am eternally fascinated by experts because I am not and have never been one. I like a lot of stuff and know a little about a lot, rather than a lot about a little.

James Hoffman is an expert on coffee. As an avid coffee enthusiast, I appreciate this. I love coffee and drink it every day, but don't know a lot about it. Watching his channel is changing that for me.

On a normal day, I would rather pay a trusted expert to make my coffee — it's my only drug, and a much needed break during my normal commutes — but right now everywhere's closed so I'm making do at home. With all this free time I may as well git gud at it. I like this video especially on the science of freezing coffee which taught me a lot I didn't know before and made me realise I was doing it all wrong, all the time. Never too late to learn though.

Maybe I'm a one-issue voter for thinking so, but as far as I'm concerned, nothing the Catholic Church has ever accomplished will ever matter in the face of their continued and willful coverup of serial pedophilia. If they ever decide 'hey, maybe priests who rape children should not continue to be priests and should go to jail or something,' then I will revise my opinion of their contributions to society; but I do not expect them to ever meet that condition.

I agree, although I also think that’s a difference between an institution and individuals. I.e. I don’t think catholics are bad people for following a religion, but I do think The Catholic Church as an institution is corrupt.

Probably not the thread for this but this is how I feel about most institutions, and definitely most religions, so I don’t draw sharp distinctions here. I think people get to believe what they want to believe but it’s just good mental hygiene to always question authority.

Yeah I had the 'we have a video of you masturbating' email scam a while back. They made it more convincing by claiming to have had access to all my information for a while now, with which they've been recording me in secret, and as proof did accurately offer up one of my passwords, likely purchased from a data breach.

A simple google search indicated this was a hoax, but as a result I now religiously monitor and update my passwords, so in all honestly they did me a favour by scaring me like that.

Also, I'm incredibly offended by the idea that they thought I should pay them for a video of me masturbating.

At this point I think it's fair to say the president is just gaslighting the public.

I don't know what else to call this whole tactic of 'I didn't say what I literally just said, I wasn't talking to the person I was clearly talking to, and I was being sarcastic, when I clearly wasn't.'

The only correct response to this statement, and the genius who came up with it, is a shit-eating grin and a, ‘You first.’

I feel guilty for how easy this quarantine has been for me, but honestly it's brought me closer to a lot of people I care about, despite the physical distance. As someone who's lived alone for my entire adult life, this has seriously driven home for me that no man is an island, and the importance of good custody of one's social relationships.
