@Ghost You lost me at 'balanced power sets for FCs'. I just couldn't stop laughing.

RE: Game Design: Avoiding Min-Maxing
The way you avoid min-maxing isn't systemic, it's thematic. If the goal is to be as powerful as possible, there will be min maxing, as we see a lot in WoD/CoD, D&D, where optimization can equate to survival in an antagonistic setting.
If the setting and theme is such that there is less of a pvp element, then min-maxing becomes less of a problem.
For example: Dark Metal, to not min-max there would mean setting yourself up to die back in it's hay day. The very nature of sphere's make it so you have conflict within your own sphere, conflict with other sphere's and the majority of that conflict is other PC's, who can and will optimize as well.
In D&D optimization is fun cuz it makes you feel powerful, but, it's not entirely necessary because for the most part, the antagonism is all NPC's.
So from a game design standpoint... you end up needing to design either a setting that doesn't encourage it or limits it's impact, or you need to create a system where people can, as was said before, make what they /want/ to play, without having to sacrifice in order to do so.

RE: Valorous Dominion
@lotherio I appreciate that information a lot.
Thank you very much.
I have modified his stats some. Hopefully he lives to get to where he is more nimble and his wife can get him to improve his appearance!

RE: Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)
@the-sands Oh for fucks sake, here goes the circular nonsense again. Several systems have been pointed out as having /something/ similar to that, and everyone says 'aspects suck' and then there are people who are demanding a characters whole entire personality and mindset be mapped out on the game, on a sheet, so that they can point and go: No. I am immune to your stuff that you paid points for even though it cost more than all my combined punch you in the face skills.
There comes a point wher epeople HAVE to be able to separate their 'player agency' from the god forsaken character and let the character /live/ in a virtual world that is not this world, where they can change and adapt and have foibles, successes, failures, and not all be bound by some ineffable way some nebulous person see's the character.
There is NO SYSTEM that accurately represents reality!
Not one!
Quit trying to make social combat like /reality/ and play by the rules.

I'm also willing to believe that some of their reaction to the lashback on this is "It's not for you", for the same reason.
The mysterious bit is, given that it is not for us, why the fuck is it still here? I can see not removing the thread, but keeping it alive with the links to their new articles is off.
Sure, our community would ignore or mock posts about RPI MUDs on an exactly equal basis with anything else that gets posted that just isn't largely what the membership is into, so RPI MUDders are 'welcome' here, but it takes a certain something to put an advert for a 'dirt bike club' on during the Tour de France and say, "Noo, it's a motorcycle club," and "the ad wasn't for you," to the BMX and mountain bike guys who show up.
See this right here is something that I've been asking forever.
I think it's fair to say that an advertisement post, should be an advertisement post, followed by some discussion about the thing being advertised either for or against, not, as has been done here, a continuous string of 'content' updates.
Any of us who DO have interest in the site, would SEE THE FUCKING NEW ARTICLES ON THE SIGHT.
We don't NEED nor APPRECIATE constant 'updates' about shit that doesn't pertain to us.
Period.
Stop.
Go the fuck home.
Especially since this forum doesn't have the ability to block a poster. I'd /happily/ block posts, and a few topics, to not get them to show up whenever there's a new message.
I slogged through I don't know how many pages of this, just to see more self righteous nonsense spilled by the people who can't understand why we're upset.
I saw the coke and pepsi ads comparison and it's more like...
Trying to market Viagra or Cialis to lesbians. All the time. Inescapably, and then being mad when they get pissed.
Then take in the OR crowd thinking that wading in and being even MORE insulting and aggressive than they already /were/ is going to help... and being upset when they get destroyed over it.
That's what we do.
When we're not being ultra helpful, we're destroying everyone's happy pretendy funtimes.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
Fortunately there are many turnings of the wheel. Many mirrors.
It is one of those settings that can easily /easily/ get rid of the big names if the game runners wanted to.

Yeah ... nobody's forcing you to read this thread. Nobody's demanding that you read all of the content updates.
And none of us care how many times we're told (through insinuation), "You're too different than me, so get off of my internet space or I'm going to wildly insult you and throw a tantrum."
If we think there's value in advertising here, and we're doing so within the rules, we're going to continue to do so.
I think what's interesting is that all of the talk about our mission statement (the meat of the criticism of our site, with points that I tend to agree with) ... after we admit that the feedback is on the nose there and we're going to take it ... the conversation here reverts back to "you're different, you don't belong, go the fuck away, we don't want you here."
Which is exactly the sort of coarse, aggressive attitude that brought me here to begin with.
The whole entire reason we are coarse, and aggressive, is because you people don't seem to get that you're not wanted.
I think it's fair to say that your initial advertising probably did it's job. It got the attention of the people who would be interested in your site and they went to check it out. They might be very involved in your site now, and that's cool.
Let me repeat: That. Is. Cool.
At first, nobody WANTED your site to fail, it was just an alternate thing and more options are ALWAYS better, as we in the MU* community well know. Then the holier than thou passive aggressive not even bothering to read what people are saying started.
Then the SPAM started.
Then you come here and you try to out troll /us/.
Cuz that is /totally/ going to win you points, and get more people over.
You're like a rabid chijuajua that won't stop yapping and unfortunately, this board won't let us ignore a thread, block a user, or otherwise control our experience on the forums to that extent.
I promise you if we did have those tools a lot less people would bitch because many of us would NEVER see your pedantic diatribes in defense of your poorly written 'theme' or 'charter' or whatever that basically can't even get basic sentence and paragraph structure correct to not piss off much of this community.
Hell, @il-volpe even corrected it for you, probably took 10 seconds, and you STILL haven't changed anything. Instead you defend non-action like your feces don't stink.
Once you try to out troll us though, well, you're going to lose there. Now you're a target. Now you're feeding the trolls as well as being one.
Like @Thenomain said this stopped being a worthy thread for /anything/ a long time ago, especially since you OR admins still refuse to meaningfully engage, instead spitting out piss, vitriol, and unsubstantiated 'No U's'.
In fact, I think it's fair to say, that you're just damaging your brand name now every time you put fingers to the keyboard @Jaunt .
P.S. Your fascination on permadeath... I'm willing to bet there's a TON more games running MUSH that feature permadeath than MUD's.

RE: Game Restarts
@arkandel That may or may not be true.
Code could be easy.
Writing tons of theme and/or setting information, plus story plus everything else?
That can take a long ass time

RE: Pick Your Poison: A Chronicle of Darkness Interest Check
I think people would respect a Hunter game where people lost their characters a lot more than the typical nonsense where PC's survive shit they really shouldn't.
I vote for Hunter.

RE: What is your turning point?
For me it comes down to a simple thing:
Is the RP Enjoyable or is it not.
If the RP has become consistently not-enjoyable then it is not worth my time. I play these games to have fun.
Note: Enjoyable RP does not always mean enjoyable to the character.
As per the TS thing?
It would depend on how it was mentioned OOCly for me. Sometimes people have different needs and desires, but it doesn't mean that they are pressuring you, they are just trying to get things on the same page.
Or they could be pressuring you.
I dunno your situation.

RE: Shadowrun Denver & New Plot
I would, if it weren't 3rd edition shadow-run. I actually played on Denver when it first opened and helped to get it started in the beta actually but that was a very long time ago.
If Denver were updated to 5th edition, I'd probably check it out.

RE: Let's talk about TS.
@sunny Then you do not want to communicate about a potentially sensitive topic.
IC is IC, I get that.
It's not impolite to ask someone before getting into a potentially intimate scene what is good for that person anymore than it is asking someone you're about to create a conflict with what they are ok with happening.
Communication is important.
ETA
@sunny said in Let's talk about TS.:
I'm just not on board with this. We (general we!) don't have these kinds of conversations for all the other sorts of RP that we engage in. I'm not interested in having it about the sex.
We (The General We) /SHOULD/ be having this conversation about ALL SORTS of other RP.
When did it become a good idea to STOP communicating on these games about /anything/?

RE: The 100: The Mush
@Miss-Demeanor Someone is apparently disbelieving that some of us have had problems there. So much so that simple comments of what happened to them get downvoted. Go figure. Case of to much invested maybe.

Absolutely! And I don't mind the asking, at all.
It's when I say 'this is my preference' and that answer is not good enough, that's where my issue comes in. My answer of 'I have no limits, I will let you know if I get actually upset by something that happens as a natural part of the RP' should be enough. If I then get upset/offended/bothered by something at this point, it's on me.
Ok that I can get behind.
Your comment read to me originally as:
DO NOT TALK TO ME ABOUT THIS AT ALL
Which is what I had an issue with.
Thanks for clearing up the misunderstanding.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I won't play a game with microtransactions unless it's a f2p game (which is something of a joke, it's never truly free, they have to make money somehow). I would prefer to pay my money once and be done with them.
I don't mind spending money for DLC if it is actual /content/. In that respect I try to justify game purchases with how much time it will entertain me, a movie costs so much money, if the DLC can't entertain me for at least as long as a decent movie for the same price, not worth getting.

RE: #WIDWW pt 2 - ST, Player, or staff?
The problem is that the players expect to win.
They don't really want to be challenged.
They want to be the bad asses.
Which negates the whole 'horror' aspect of the setting.
Which is how we end up with fanged and furry super hero games instead of <insert anything here> of Darkness.
I mean sure some people might like that, but not me. I want there to be risk of player loss. I want there to be bad asses we can't just grab Suzy the Gangrel with horrid claws and swarm form to roll up on and kill. Or whatever.
Those players who take the physical monsters /and/ bitch when they face a threat they can't throw dice at... those are the problems to me.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I've been kind of fixating on 7 days to die lately, and how interesting I can make my 'base'.
The game is legit fun, graphics are pretty low end, but it's still Alpha and still entertaining as hell.
