@lotherio And smaller isn't really a bad thing, IMO. I'll take quality of a player-base over quantity every time.

      Misadventure

My thought on this is basically table talk, but where anyone (or at the very least a GM player) can be at as many places as needed? Like the green/yellow/red idea above, have it switch to a specific command to emit to the entire room.

It could also be looked at as a bunch of channels.

@faraday Do you happen to have or recall a list of the pros and cons for the setups you looked at?

MSB is still pretty anonymous truth. be told. Unless you post something to a playlist or use the same handle on a game where it would be known, there is really nothing to tie you to any character on a MU. Some very clever people might pick up on things based on OOC comments, writing style, etc, but for the most part, if none of you ever told me who you played, I'd have no clue.

I think part of it going to depend on how much you want to maintain a consistent theme that isn't in line with modern 21st century first world normative assumptions. The more you want to keep things that aren't 'now time standard', the more of your upper structure needs to be NPCs who are very committed to the status quo. If your theme is more modern-day friendly, or you are okay with it going in that direction, more PC leadership can happen.

But, honestly? I think the biggest thing is that IC leadership positions need to be divorced from OOC leadership responsibilities if you're going to have PCs in those spots. There's a tremendous pressure on PC leaders to be 'good leaders' by whatever crazed and entitled way that other PCs define that, and it's both hugely stressful and harmful to having a game with a consistent 'back and forth' of IC conflict and drama. A 'bad' IC leader can drive more and often more interesting story than a 'good' one, IMO, where 'good' is 'tries to please everyone and not Make Trouble with unreasonable demands'.

NPC leaders have more freedom to drive RP and action by being...not great people IC. They can be drunkards who order PCs to try and do something frankly stupid, or they can have a blood feud with another faction that means people can't just 'sit down and talk out' a thousand year old grudge the way PCs are inclined to. And they can do it without taking the IMMENSE amount of OOC flack that PC leaders get whenever they make...almost any decision at all.

I'm watching it now, and I can think of is sympathy for Japan. All those expensive, empty stadiums and facilities. Countries never make back what they spend for these events, but that's definitely true for Japan in this case.

Yeah, that's a hard one. And they had a doctor and nurse as part of the torch teams in the stadium, that really hit home. I'm impressed and then sad yeah. The outdoor events have some people in the stands. Or cycling finish is getting people in seats. Still the indoor ones are empty.

One issue with a +attack PC command is that it falls apart when fighting NPCs, unless a object is made with stats that you can target.

Depends on how the command is built. Using @faraday's system as an example, you can set up NPCs in the combat scenario that have stats and equipment as necessary.

It's kinda shocking how much a one-sentence 'application' mitigates this

Oh, sure, I'm not at all against requiring apps for rosters. I was just pointing out that it's a system option. You can require apps for a single character, all characters, or none of them.

But if you ARE going to require apps, then you need a way to talk to the person applying. That means either getting their email or letting them make up a player bit. Either way, it requires communication on the part of staff to let the player know what's up. No amount of code can substitute for that 🙂

I usually don't self plug again for some place I've opened, but this time I am shamelessly doing that.

Doing good, its a cozy little joint with 8 active players, about 10-12 player characters total. A few working through CG. Its the right size for me to throw down 1-2 staff scenes a week and keep things moving at a decent pace (not fast or rapid, if someone doesn't show up a few times a week or even daily, they're not being left behind).

We're getting through pre-season plans dealing with the appearance of magic in some humans along with the discover of goblins on earth. Folks are discovering their heritage a little (bloodline being part of the theme), developing their magic potential and such. Getting close to introducing the first serious threat to humanity.

Influences include Once Upon a Time and Trollhunters, more super hero adventurous like Trollhunters.

I discovered a closer theme in June after opening, a Turkish modern fantasy piece called The Protector that is really close to home. I'd recommend The Protector for anyone, season 2 isn't too good for overall story of the main arch but it really delves into a supporting character and is close to the life struggles of a WoD ghoul from my perspective (the guy that created the ghoul is constantly saying your mind and using his abilities to dominate them to do his bidding in a manner when she doesn't want to have anything to do with it, this characters struggle is the best part of season 2).

@ominous This is indeed a part of the system and something I imagine being used.

Ships are customizable. Class I is fighter, class V is super dreadnaught/star destroyer/etc. Class II is good hauler/explorer, Class III is good start for housing hangers to hold ships. There are mechanics for hangers (like one hanger can hold 2 ships of lesser class, or 16 of class-2; class 3 can hold a hanger of 16 fighters).

I literally put an asterisk on the discord development discussion chan behind one ship to say it can include hangers of lesser ships so players can do away missions. Class III and above would jump to a system and do exactly what you're describing, send off Class II and I smaller ships to go do the deals in the system at hand due to travel times on larger ships.

ETA: Its modules, so many modules by class to include weapons and defense and other systems. A crew can have a ship that uses modules on hanger(s).

Names of places are re-used in real life though as well, it's not something unheard of in the real world, and you will find that North America for example has many towns and cities named after places in Europe.

It extends even further to, so like..

You have the PROVINCE of Ontario in the Country of Canada.

You have the CITY of Ontario in the State of California.

If this kind of thing has been covered, or mentioned; please ignore me. If not, it seems kind of silly to be distraught over a place sharing a name with another place in fiction since it happens in non-fiction every single day.

Edit: That's weird, this was the last thing I read awhile back and I wrote a post and now it posted as soon as I logged on. Sorry to necro.

Hey @Lotherio - what do you think about ICly thematic condiments?

We were discussing condiments on the public channel just now and I went researching and found some neat things. 😄 While we don't have ketchup since no tomatoes, we do have the oft mentioned fish sauce/garum, and I have found that there is a specific Italian version of it! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colatura_di_Alici

Also, historically iRL there was mustard - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustard_(condiment)#History - "The Romans were probably the first to experiment with the preparation of mustard as a condiment. They mixed unfermented grape juice (the must) with ground mustard seeds (called sinapis) to make "burning must", mustum ardens — hence "must ard". A recipe for mustard appears in De re coquinaria, the anonymously compiled Roman cookbook from the late 4th or early 5th century" "as a glaze for spit-roasted boar." By the 10th century, monks in Paris began their own production. Dijon, France, became a recognized center for mustard making by the 13th century. The popularity of mustard in Dijon is evidenced by written accounts of guests consuming 320 litres of mustard creme in a single sitting at a gala held by the Duke of Burgundy in 1336."

Also, while we don't have mayonnaise, going by RL history we would have aoili or something like it: "The first mention of a condiment similar to aoli comes from historian Pliny the Elder, who described a common Roman sauce of garlic and olive oil called aleatum, after the Latin word for garlic. Since Pliny died in the Vesuvius eruption of 79 A.D., this makes the aoli at least 2,000 years old, and it is probably much older than that for it have become commonplace by Plinys time. Because the Roman empire expanded throughout Europe and north Africa, with an entourage of bureaucrats, tradesmen, soldiers and households bringing their cuisine with them, historians theorize that Italy is the true home of aoli."

What do you think? It's details like this that I love to geek out over.
