    • RE: The limits of IC/OOC responsibility

@roz obviously as this a thread about personal ideals I am speaking of what I think would be the ideal candidate for leadership. The facts of what has/had/is happening on games in no way deters what I -think- should be required of leadership pcs

      Edit:emphasis on the wrong word

@roz A Game Master is the master of the game. Not only do they come up with the stories but they also decide rulings and what rules apply, create houserules and define the metaphysics of the world around you. Not all Staff are GMs in a MU but all GMs are staff.

ST or story telling is but one aspect of this. You follow the rules as presented to you and create plots for other people, if you cannot interpret a roll's results as described with the rules you are given and be able to present representations of that then you should not be in a (to steal some terminology from @faraday ) a gatekeeper or leadership position, as not only do you need to help promote rp but be willing to help create and maintain what your group is interested in.

@thenomain But you also have the other side of things where a player does not follow the theme of the game in their IC actions and then whine and complain and bitch when something bad does happen because they broke the theme or at least was not smart enough to get away with it and thus you have to assert ICA=ICC

@roz being able to GM and being able to storytell are two different skillsets of their own as well. GMs are already in the game as Staff, if you cant cobble together an intro, conflict, resolution, and be able to present that material you shouldn't be in leadership positions.

    • RE: The Death Of Telnet: Is It Time To Face The Music?

@moonman and if it is? Oh well enjoy the ride. You are not going fo see it shrivel up and die next week, maybe in ten years, maybe even longer. I know I will continue to MU until I die.

I think the biggest problem with tabletop MU is what was stated just a bit ago where our Staff are moderators for the most part which leaves players having to make their own games to a degree, this is why Iron Realms has 100s of players across their games bc they have a game to go play and waste time on. (I am currently awaiting their new release Starmourn). Sure they have a client that is a bit more what has been proposed in this thread but the core is still input>output. And there is rp to be had in these locations, not at the pace those of us from tabletop MUs are used to but its there!

MU is not dying, tabletop and freeform non-coded games are what is phasing out

@rook said in The Death Of Telnet: Is It Time To Face The Music?:

What I'm asking is: How would you completely redo MU* so that it is not command>output in two windows? Is that even a goal here?

I am not a coder, I am ignorant of these newer playforms Ares and such, but this part right here, input>output that stuff, how would we be able to say that it is a MU of any form if it was not this way? Idk about telnet but I do know about roleplay as GM on roll20 I think we are missing only one thing and that is voice communication, but ww have Discord/skype a thousand options. But not everyone wants to do voice, voice also dramaticallycan slow down the pacing of a session. This hobby, text based rolellay, is not something that is drastically going to change, or it wouls not be this hobby. If there were no games like these I would just be forced to play on roll20 for my RP.

Tabletopping is coming back in general culture right this very second, I think the best thing ww cam do as a community is just ride that wave. Know a buddy into dnd? Show him your mush. Every person I know irl I have shown and while I have yet to convert anyone that is because it is not their style.

Reading and writing is hard, though we take this for granted as we are skilled in it and enjoy it as this is our hobby, our lives, but others may not like to read, or they do not like to type. If we remove input>output what do we become? A video game. Do you know why I do not play most video game rpgs? Limitations on immersion, I CANNOT go where I want when I want or attempt anything at any time. I am stuck doing what a coder has decided is avaliable to do, my character is a representation of someone else's imagination.

I don't know if the hobby is dying, it seems about the same size and difficulty to find games as it did almost 20 years ago when I started, what I have seen is a migration away from the rp based systems (mush/mux etc) to muds or forum play because of reasons stated earlier in this thread. If it is dying? Enjoy the ride, we have one life. If it isn't? Grab a friend or two and try to get them to sit down with you as your friend and play with you once a week or something.

    • RE: The limits of IC/OOC responsibility

Personally for me this is my guidelines for the various IC positions you mentioned.

Significant IC position in a group: You should be willing to meet with other memebers for RP at least once a week to pass along IC information, if need be have a 'court day' where your PC has an open door policy. You should also be willing to do ST a miniplot or something along those lines once a month, usually handed out as an assignment from your character.

Bonded relationships: at least bimonthly you should have significant interaction with your bonded for the various needs they have of your pc. As the Bonded one sadly it is a bit more important you be free to tag along for your Bonder as often as possible and you also will have to accept the responsibility of being contacted by other players that may want to get to know your PC bc of your unique connection to your Bonded.

IC relationship: any deep meaningful relationship (dating, engagement, marriage, siblings/family) should have very open and clear OOC communication about activity avaliability and what both parties are looking for in the interaction. Both are responsible for keeping in contact and keeping each other's PCs invovled in their IC dealings on an equal level between each other. I have never had a true SO rp myself bc I know I cannot always commit to those responsibilities OOCly but this is what I would look for.

As for when to break up/get fired/etc I think two week notice is good enough to let the player know your feelings on the issue and to recieve a response. Depending on the length of time they are disappeared you might want to be ready to accept them back in even if you broke things off or fired them, think of it like a grace period of 'looking for a replacement'. In several games their theme allows for good ideas as to why they were missing without explination. Secret missions, kidnapping, got stuck in the Underworld/Shadow etc etc.

Drell, I'm okay with, but I'm pretty sure that, in canon, they are sort of rare. Then again, on a game where your race may not mean a lot system-wise, whatever, right?

They are just rare off the Hanar homeworld as their race is generally xenophobic.

I am making Salome over there and while not interested in joining the krewe (atleast out of cg) would like to get hooked in! Making a Charonite character primarily.

By far my favorite HS at TR, I sorely missed you when you stepped down though we never really interacted much personally. You just seemed to be the primary driving force for metaplot and rp fostering and the few times we did interact you were awesome and encouraging.

Just wanted to show some love to the game. As someone that had a rough first encounter, (app was never noticed until almost two weeks later on first try), the second go around has been great. I don't see a lot of the same usual tropes of the WoD community here at this game as I have at other WoD MU*s, so far everyone has been awesome and respectful, and aye we need more Changing Breeds. @TimmyZ said in FS3:

Sorry @faraday , just ads for FS3 games always get derailed by rules discussion.

This is to move discussions here.

In the Fifth Kingdon thread age was brought up.

No one like young prodigy. But let's look at this. Hockey, best player right now is Connor McDavid. Turned 20 in January, only player to score 100 points this season.

      Every Olympic athlete, is younger.

There have been studies on this. Some coorelation to age and youth having that belief they just can, and that diminishes as we age.

I believe the grizzled vet being physically superior is more a trope than an actuality.

Realistically one would see a decline as age progresses. More systems used to have this ... Physical goes down, mental goes up.

I think the young prodigy argument is overrated though.

Its pretty common that the grizzled old vet doesn't win because he's faster or stronger, it's because he knows a few tricks he's picked up over the years. He outthinks and outexperiences the younger guy. That's pretty common student/mentor trope thing. Old guy knows everything you do about how to use his muscles, but he also knows a couple other things you haven't even thought of yet that lets him win the fight, liek certain leverage positions in close combat or things like that.

Young prodigies are generally best in the mental aspects, I like them but generally the character's personality has to be as mature as the amount of knowledge they supposedly have. I really like Dresden File's Archive as an example of a child prodigy. Intelligent, young, mature, but there are these little moments of childhood that peek through. Generally what I've found of 'child prodigy' on text-based games are lil assholes that stir up drama and no one can do anything cause they're OMG GODLIKE
