    • RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows

New update! 4.00.286 is up on the store and should update next time you restart your client, or it's up on the github if you prefer working that way. The biggest new thing is a way to view images within the client, and there's a number of little fixes.

      • Added a dockable image viewer window that downloads and displays the last image URLs seen in the output
Note: By default, the dockable image viewer will automatically appear when the first image link arrives, but it can be disabled in options: Options > Preferences > Untick "Show image viewer"

      • Added restore of minimized/maximized state of every window (also fixes a bug where panes shrink gradually if you closed it while maximized)

      • Fixed regression from build 285 where new windows would always have two tabs

      • Fixed annoyance where if you connect from a connect dialog, a reconnected tab in a different window won't get the focus

      • Fixed a bug where puppets would prevent window configurations from being saved to their characters (the puppet one would overwrite it then be ignored)

      • Fixed annoyance where if you restore a configuration from another computer and any of the windows/panes are off screen, they are moved to the primary monitor

      • Improved hyperlink parsing so that a ')' at the end is included if there's an unmatched '(' before it (doesn't handle nested ('s though)

      • Improved Log filename %server%/%character% substitutions to allow multiple substitutions of each

Gonna put in a quick plug for the Discord group, too. Good for finding help and answers to questions, and also for making suggestions of your own!

...okay, so it only shows up for Open scenes, not private ones, even if it's your private scene, looks like? But on my tests it didn't show up anywhere I could find on the Active Scenes page regardless, which I'm almost positive more people use to look for one. I saw the post way too late to be able to check Auspice's.

      @silentsophia
I don't really get your first sentence, there. It's unreasonable for him to find this creepy because there's something else arguably similar out there? I'm pretty sure it's possible to find them both creepy!

They did, actually, claim to be a 'haven' -- but for "gay, bisexual, and queer male characters" (emphasis mine). And "players of all kinds" are welcome, as long as they're playing queer (or straight but open-minded) males.

So I see @ixokai's point and get why he might find it off-putting, although I like that they're up-front about things. Like @surreality says, it saves time and effort for anyone who'd want a female character or gets (and dislikes) a fetish vibe off the set-up.

What I'm kind of curious about is: DO superhero games have a history of treating non-straight male heroes poorly? "Unlike many other games that treat even established gay, bi, and queer male characters poorly" strongly suggests that, but as someone who doesn't play the genre, I don't know if that's true. If it is, I can see a non-fetish place this would come from, although given my experience in other genres I'd've thought an everyone-welcome game with strict enforcement against people being that kind of asshole would work also.

    • RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows

      ...and we have 4.00.287!

      • Added Stat Panes: shows integers, strings, or ranges to show character stats/attributes/etc. Values updated through trigger stat actions.

      • Added 'Content restored' messages to every spawn window, along with 'Connected' and 'Disconnected' messages to make things clearer.

      • Added colored tabs: you can set the color by right clicking on a tab or by using the /tabcolor command (uses HTML style color #RRGGBB or a name).

      • Changed the look of the taskbar & splitter bars; tabs drag-rearrange a lot more nicely now.

      • Changed window titles to reverse the order of the items from server - character - puppet to puppet - character - server.

      • Improved image viewer so it doesn't use a case sensitive search for images (for example, .jpg worked, but .JPG did not).

      • Fixed a bug when docking windows where they would take up the entire client space; instead, limit them to at most half of the space.

      • Fixed a bug when docking windows where they could not be docked on the outside edge; they'd always go to the next inner pane.

      • Fixed minor glitch where, during Find in the output window, the scrollbar wouldn't move to match the shown text.

Stat panes are a special kind of spawn window where you can gather useful bits of periodically changing information such as money, HP, or last person paged. As an example:
example image of a stat pane
You can find the documentation here, and the trigger help channel on the discord is a good place to look for further help.

/tabcolor lets you set the colour on a given tab, so it's easier to create visual groups and such. Along with the reversing of info on the tab to be most to least specific, it's now easier to keep track of which tab is which character (or puppet) if you have quite a few. You can also set the colour via the right-click menu on the tab, if you prefer!
      Clockwork's tabs as an example

Coming up in the next release: tab auto-completion! It'll check your input and output histories for matching options.
an example of what the auto-completion GUI currently looks like

(n.b.: none of the screenshots are mine; thank you to Clockwork and Bennet for those!)

If you use the store version (and please do if you're willing, so Bennet can get the usage stats), it should update on your next program restart. Otherwise, you can find it here. And the discord server is still a friendly place for help and to make suggestions!

I feel like I must play on fairly different games than everyone else. The only ones so far this is true of for my experience are the Alexander/Alexandra-derivations group... I don't think I've EVER played with an IC Sabine, Salin, or Niamh.

    • RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows

...and 4.00.288 is already out! Very small update, this one:

      • Added tab completion: just press tab to search input history/output/spawns for words to autocomplete with. Pressing tab after a space will suggest a next word in the same way. You can disable this behavior by setting the 'Input Window - Autocomplete' keyboard shortcut to nothing. See little screenshot in post above!

      • Fixed Alt+# display to not get stuck on after Alt+Tab/etc

As always, the store version should update itself, and the git version is here.

    • RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows

Bennet (the developer) asked me to pass on that nope, he never meant for the 'game bar' to come up -- that Windows behaviour isn't mentioned when they make you classify your app. Also that BeipMU ended up listed as a game because people play games through it, and apparently the store doesn't let one change the classification once a thing's posted.

Thank you for finding that solution, @Arkandel!

If it's coming up for anyone who isn't using Beip from a work-type locked-down computer, though, please mention?

AS FOR PBS AFFECTING MY RP... also yes. If there are two players/characters using the same person, I will go out of my way to mistake one for the other, as punishment for them not combing the wiki to make sure their CHOSEN PB was not already in circulation (something else I'll do, like a creeper).

...well as a punishment, that's kind of hard on the one who took the PB first. 😉 I'd guess there's a reasonable chance they're already mildly annoyed about someone else taking 'their' face, to start with.

I've had some fun mistaken-identity/wow-you-look-just-like RP with people who weren't bothered by it, though, and back in the days when PBs weren't really a thing (and wikis weren't at all), I nonetheless chose someone as a visual inspiration that someone else had also picked (with some tweaks), and their resemblance ended up being a big story point, which was kind of awesome.

@silverfox I think theoretically chromebooks have linux in there so one could possibly run wine... but I suspect it'd be annoyingly complicated. But it'll be here when/if you get access to something that'll run a little windows program for you!

      ...and now...

      4.00.290 has been released!

      • Added sample pane to triggers/aliases/macros! (see image above)

      • Added regex syntax error messages while editing regexes. (see image above)

      • Added test strings & test result to aliases (similar to triggers, but with the test result too)

      • Added bringing current tab's floating panes to the top when switching tabs (This is very useful if you use a floating pane for the image viewer, for example.)

      • Added auto scrolling of the trigger/aliases/macros views when dragging above/below the tree

      • Improved Stat triggers to that \1 \2, etc.. works in the window title field

      • Fixed drag image not appearing while dragging triggers/aliases/macros. Before fix it only worked on certain fonts/OSes (despite using OS function to draw them)

      • Fixed an issue with mouse wheel scrolling in a split text window, where it'd scroll by the wrong amount (bug was that the scrollbar wasn't updating properly)

      • Fixed the keyboard macro dialog to not show typed letters unless it's replacing the key

      • Fixed a minor annoyance where the imaging window might flicker briefly when restoring the window layout

      • Fixed a bug where when editing triggers, having a blank Matcharoo regex caused the test string to stop updating properly

      • Fixed a crash with aliases where a blank Matcharoo regex would crash!

      • Fixed a minor glitch in the Trigger/Alias test string displays being highlighted wrong with multibyte characters

      • Fixed a crash where if BeipMU.exe is launched by itself without a config.txt or Assets/DefaultConfig.txt it crashes at launch instead of using defaults

So, lots of fixes, and some shiny new built-in assistance with figuring out how to get your triggers working! Help from people is still available in the Discord at most times -- drop by if you have questions or suggestions or want to say thanks.

As always, the Windows store version will update itself next time you restart it. Please consider using it so the developer gets (aggregated) usage stats and a little info in case of crashes! But it can also be downloaded from github if one prefers.

@Ninjakitten Just to be clear... the windows store version doesn't update on restart of the game. At least mine didn't. It was a day or three before the new version came.

It seems like Windows doesn't always check right away. If you know there's an update but it doesn't do it when you restart, you can force it!

      • Open the Microsoft Store App
      • Click the three dots in the upper right
      • Choose 'downloads and updates'
        d4a79614-a507-458b-8604-9175f808be2e-image.png
      • It should be there and let you click to make it do the update immediately!
