    • RE: What is the 'ideal' power range?

      @Derp

      I don't think @Arkandel was asking what an ideal power level is. He is looking for how much of a difference a game should allow between characters. The power level itself is irrelevant as it is all relative. The question isn't "Should all the characters be literal gods or should all of them be dung beetles," it's "Should some characters be literal gods while other characters are dung beetles?" At least that's my read on it.

      Personally, if a game is going the free for all, no limit to xp earned and no limit to the number of maxxed out skills, then each increase in a skill should be as tiny as possible or you get the dinosaur problem. A person with a maxxed out skill in something should only defeat a person just starting off say 3 times out of 4. If you're keeping a very tight control on xp earned and limits on the number of maxxed out skills then a person with a maxxed out skill should defeat a person just starting off 9 out of 10 times.

      Personally, I couldn't do that. The four hour mark is about when stuff usually starts getting good.

      Pretty sure I remember seeing land ratings in the alpha document

      That particular island over there is rated X. The locals are very frisky.

      I don't recall land ratings in the alpha document, but maybe it's the terminology used. Was it called 'land ratings'?

      I know micromanagement is not everyone's cup of tea, but I figured that's the appeal of apping in Princess Twinkles Grayson who is 144th in line for the throne.

      Right-o. If playing Crusader Kings II or Axis & Allies isn't your particular cup of tea, maybe hold off on apping for Duke/Duschess Fancytitle. At least, that's how I always looked at it. There's plenty of princes and princesses to go around for anyone who wants a fancy title without having to do anything.

      One of my favorite stories of a group going through Castle Ravenloft (the original) and killing Strahd comes from an OSR blog. Warning: spoilers. http://dreamsinthelichhouse.blogspot.com/2011/07/die-strahd-die.html

    • RE: Engaging the Whole Scene

      A method I use is to put groups into situations that require everyone to do something and be so busy doing something that they can't do the other somethings that have to be done. For instance, sailing a ship in the midst of battle. A couple of people have to be fighting off those boarding the ship, one has to be steering the ship and issuing commands to the guys handling the sails, someone else has to be firing arrows at the other ship to down as many of the opposing crew as possible, so on and so forth.

      @Jeshin

      Ominous sighs. I knew I should've stuck to my OSR games and not let them talk me into 5e.

      The original Ravenloft was epic and wonderful; though, it did inspire the multitude of railroad-y modules that followed it, so it should be cursed for that travesty. Still it was magnificent. Hopefully 5e didn't tarnish it.

    • RE: D&D Stew

      The group that I am a player in is playing Tomb of Annihilation in and has ejected encumbrance, hunger, thirst, random encounters, and a few other elements that makes a hex crawl a hex crawl, causing me to have almost completely checked out. I only signed up because it is a hex crawl. Now we just go from location to location like we are teleporting, beating the absolute crap out of everything at the location with the DM stupified at why we are doing so well. Psssst, it's because you took all the teeth out of the campaign you dunderhead!

      The massive 23 players (not all at once, just like 4-8 at a time) old school campaign world that I run is fun, but I worry it's falling apart. It's just me and one other DM running the world, my time is very limited anymore, so we don't get to the table often, and the players are starting to lose interest.

      @Pyrephox friendo, you seem to pop up in various threads with these “realistic solutions” that literally nobody wants to actually play through on a MU.

      Do you do this on purpose, or do you actually believe your commentaries to be something that would work on MUs?

      Genuinely curious.

      Actually, I would play though the first and the last suggestion, but, as has been established, I am a major outlier from the typical MU*er.

      I so badly want to play DUNE, but I don't own it and also don't have a group who wants to play it. I'll just have to satisfy myself with Star Wars: Rebellion.

    • RE: Gamecrafting: Excelsior

      I had a similar idea, though, with more of a focus on megacorporations fighting each other for resources and plots of land. I was going to steal some ideas from Offworld Trading Company, using a hex grid to mark off the world map. Throw in some Tales from the Borderlands with its space cowboys and some cyberpunk elements and voila! Yet another game idea I won't see to fruition.

      Anyways, I am very interested in seeing how this develops. It looks like you have hashed out quite a bit of where you want to go with things.

      EDIT - A random thought popped into my head from previous conversations months ago. Someone mentioned the joy of space trucking in a MU*. You might want to consider creating something like H-space (I think that's what its called) on the planet that people can drive/fly/sail/whatever through to get the poly-neutronium-yttrium-silver-chloride-154 from point A to point B. Though, it's sounding like you want a smaller grid.

      We're at an impasse and talking past each other at this point. I suggest we just agree to disagree; otherwise, we're just going to keep going 'nuh-uh' at each other.
