      I STARTED to go fold Laundry, but then my husband said the pot babies were hungry and to go feed them.

      (They didn't really want to eat.)

      Calypso is NOT HAPPY she isn't allowed in because the pot babies are still in quarantine.

      I didn't realize that raising her while fostering would cause an obsession with the fosters. I thought once she was older she would mostly just not care.

      What I hear:

      Cats are complicated creatures with a mirand of personalities.

      Take our pot babies:

      1. Indica: Most outgoing, protects their siblings willing to sit in the open
      2. Sativa: Sits in open, but needs sibling as comfort blanket, only eats when feels safe
      3. Cocoa: Already full lap kitten with purr engaged, eats from human hand.
      4. Unnamed baby 4: Pokes head out but prefers to eat with human far away.
      5. Unnamed baby 5: Will not come out of hiding when human present even if food is offered
      6. Unnamed baby 6: Hisses and prepares to attack at slightest scent/sight of human, hides with #5.

      All of them have the same mother (though I suspect 2 fathers from coloring, 1,2, and 4, then 3, 5, 6), came from the same situation, etc.

      Yet they are RADICALLY different.

      Also, we are keeping Sativa and Indica to socialize them.

      The Marijuana babies (now named Indica and Sativa) are just too adorable. I'm not totally sure my husband is going to be able to let them go to their real foster.

      Indica, front, would only eat this afternoon when I was gently petting (like, one finger). Each time I stopped they stopped eating. We (me and the shelter) think that seriously it might just be socialization they need.

      @derp said in Critters!:

      Untrue! My favoritest cat ever was a gray-and-white feral that my brothers literally caught out in the woods

      While not true for you, it IS true for cats that come into our shelter unsocalized and/or feral. Our shier cats or cats that hiss at the people that come into the shelter on AVERAGE just do not get adopted. So while, yes, some feral come to be beloved family pets, it is a mark against them in the process to eventually get them a home.

      @ganymede

      They for sure don't really trust people and aren't ready to be adopted but I am REALLY hoping you are right. They are a little big so things are stacked against them in the adoption corner already. If we can't get them to be sweet babies who like people they might never get a chance. 😞

      These guys are the weirdest ferals. On one had they are clearly terrified and don't want to intact with us. On the other hand they don't hide in the holes we made for them, they don't hiss, and they don't scratch. At worst they chirp their discomfort with the situation.

      The first one is trapped and this is them.
      alt text

      The shelter just got a call saying another has wandered into a second trap. Apparently they are SUPER feral. Like, we will need to wear gloves, shoes, thick pants, and heavy long sleeves any time we go near them.

      The poor babies. It is raining like crazy tonight (just shy of snow) so they are probably miserable.

    • RE: Critters!

      My shelter's director and right hand adoption facilitator are on a mission to try to trap some kittens spotted behind a local (lol, that makes it seem uncommon... it isn't) Marijuana dispensary. If they can catch them we will emergency foster until they can find a permanent foster.

      Husband isn't happy I said yes to it, but agreed as long as he gets to name them Indicia and Sativa.

      @arkandel

      Oh this disappoints me like woah. 😞 Foundation is not an action book. Even a little bit.

      EDIT:

      If they wanted to turn an Asimov book into a movie (I Robot, I'm still pissed at you for taking like... all those short stories and turning them into a movie rather than, like, picking ONE and making something awesome...) then do the Robots of Dawn RIGHT.

      A PSA for all parents, guardians, or anyone else.

      If your child has an IEP, 504, READ plan, or any other kind of formal accommodation plan please please please don't assume that it'll get into the right hands. There are SO MANY hands that care for your child at school. Make sure you always have a copy and personally hand/email it to EVERY teacher that they are in contact with.

      11 weeks at school and it was just TODAY I realized that one of my kids has a severe vision issue. It just.. never came up. Usually in my class they're not looking at stuff on a board so seeing any amount of distance is not an issue. Today they did. As soon as the kid brought up vision as an issue I emailed mom.

      Mom says there is a plan in place.

      I don't have this plan.

      We fucked up.

      This is on us.

      So please - please - please. In this one thing, don't trust us. Get us all of these things.

      I need my husband to go back into work in person. He is going stir crazy and I'm finding that more and more often I have to fact check and push back on things he says because being alone has put him into an echo chamber.
