I agree! I bought 200 pokeballs yesterday, plus got extras when my friend and I went out and hit up the pokestops on the main road on this end of town. I also bought 25 incense. I am now down to 48 pokeballs and 7 incense!

      That's a lot of buying!

I've barely been playing. Very disappointed with the "fixes" they've been rolling out. 😞

Updated to include Fallen World, where I am playing and doing code stuffs. Because apparently I code now.

For anyone who missed the ad, it's Chronicles of Darkness (World of Darkness) Mage: The Awakening Second Ed., set in Manhattan.

    • BITN: The Epilogue

As some of you have read, Bump In The Night MUX is closing on August 1st (tomorrow, that is). In the last few days, we (Infestissumam and Amoracchius) plotted up some events and rolled them out, to offer a send off to the game, and attempt to tie up some loose ends, to end stories, to move to the next chapter, etc.

As very few people actually got to see that ending, and those that did have a general desire to have just a little more time to see their story to a close, I've created a play-by-post game for the BITN Epilogue. My intention is to present some details as to what happened, and what the hunters of Southern Maryland would know, and then give players a chance to share how their characters would deal with it all. It will also be a fun place to share the details of your character that you were excited about, but that never quite came up in game. Oh, and, also, I guess you could use this as a means to not lose contact with the people from BITN that you'll miss.

All that said, it's here: http://www.ongoingworlds.com/games/2612

Right now, I'm still typing stuff up, but the last two event logs are posted. More is coming shortly! Feel free to make an account, make a character, and joint he game. I'll be checking every so often to approve new characters to the game.

For anyone who is interested in seeing how BITN "ended", or sharing some details about your character's story, or their epilogue, or whatever else, I've put up a game in a play-by-post format. At present, there's just the two closing logs, but I'll be adding more details as I have time.

To "play", you'll need to create an account, a character, and submit for approval. Characters only need like 3 details, so... it's easy!

@Mercutio It's TinyMUX. We have MySQL running just fine. It's in-line, but for what I want to do, there shouldn't be an issue.

We already use the SQL connection for +help and +news, as well as xp logs. (along with a custom 'rep point' system, which is just a redone version of xp logs).

And just to clarify a further, @surreality did offer to take over paying for BITN, which TJ decided he didn't want. (And, best I can tell, this had nothing to do with surr in particular, and was a general desire to see the game end.) Afaik, surr was simply offering to take over paying for it, if that was the reason behind closing it. Oh, and, also, she wanted her pretty wiki to stay up and available to the public.

@Kanye-Qwest No. TJ did put Amora in charge of "most things", but he was always involved. Or, well, we did have like two weeks where he was MIA, but we had some warning for that, it was RL stuff, he left a means through which we could contact him. Even as Amora took over most of the leadership stuff, TJ was there there, still chatting with us, still giving ideas, still weighing in. He was also still logging in, just about daily.

It wasn't until the very end (say, two weeks ago?) that TJ was really not involved, and that was after we had already started the talk about shutting the game down (via plot).

And then, of course, BITN is his game. It was his brain child and it was paid for out of his pocket. When he made Amora "head staff", he clearly said he was maintaining the control to do exactly what he chose to do. So, long answer, but still "No, TJ was never uninvolved."

    • RE: Recc/Squee/Kudos Code?

@Mercutio @Thenomain SQL is my preference, anyways.

But if I'm going to archive things, I'd just do it within SQL, and not from anything inside the game. Which is to say, push to shove, I'd love to shift way more of the doin' things onto SQL.

Though, to be honest, I have a hard time thinking in terms of years, when it comes to MUs. I've been in this hobby for like 3 years and have played on half a dozen games, none of which have lasted longer than a few years.

Still, I think I'd want a 'within the last week' command, then maybe an 'all' command. Then, eventually, all would not truly be all, but maybe just the last many months. Then a 'are you really friggin' sure this is spammy' super all command.

@ThatGuyThere I did post up some details in game, and so I have no problem sharing them here. Some of staff wanted to shut BITN down, and conduct 2-3 month long plot arc to see the game out. Some of staff did not want to shut BITN down. The result was a conflict of opinion (aka, argument), and the game owner (that's TJ) decided to shut down.

@Arkandel I'm looking for code. Not a discussion of intended reasoning behind it, unless that reasoning is necessary to write the code.

@Cobaltasaurus About where my head was. Would you imagine storing all the historical kudos onto a single attrib on the player bit?

I think toss it all onto SQL, cause I love SQL and it loves me.

    • Recc/Squee/Kudos Code?

I'm looking for a code similar to +recc +squee +whatevertheheckelse that might already be floating around out there.

The general idea is to allow players to use a command to give kudos to their follow players. Unlike most of the other systems, I don't want this to translate to any sort of benefit (such as experience points or whatever). It should just be informational, and display on screen, and log.

For anyone who hasn't used similar, this would be something like +kudos Name=This person is a very good RPer or +kudos Name=This person gave me help or +kudos Name=This person cracked a hilarious joke.

It's just fluff. So, anything out there?

@Apos said in Bump In The Night: A Chronicles of Darkness MUX:

It might make an interesting topic since I suspect that a lot of us use the term in different ways. For me, I think of a sandbox as when stories can exist in complete isolation, and things that could reasonably effect other characters on the grid don't even if their characters would know/react to it. Not necessarily a bad thing at all, just a different style.

We actually had a bit of a hooplah about this. More than one. We expressly did not want people to play in a vacuum, yet also wanted people to run stories of their choosing. Sort of conflicting ideas, at times. We also wanted to make sure players could play stories they wanted to play, and didn't necessarily have to be part of the meta-plot. I think, in the end, we erred a little far to the "let people be", and the result was people feeling disengaged. Though, honestly, I've fretted a lot over how to keep players engaged, to allow them to feel consequences and feel like their actions are affecting the story, without forcing them to do things they don't enjoy. I don't really have an answer.

That said, I tend to agree with your definition, and don't find BITN to fit. See the players that left because they couldn't run things in their vacuum, or the people who strongly disagreed with the rules we had that your story had to fit into the broader game.

If anyone out there is interested, Amorrachius and I (Infestissumam) will be STing two final scenes to send BITN off and provide a bit of closure to the stories here.

The first event will be tomorrow, Thursday (7/28) at 9pm est.

The second event will be Saturday (7/30) at 8pm est.

      So basically--

Valor embraces it as cock-fighting slave culture, Mystic shoots itself in the foot by pointing out that the creatures they're enslaving and using in cock-fights are actually way smarter than most people think, and Instinct isn't giving it much thought at all because lulz cock-fighting.

Man, if that isn't an analogy for the way modern society views just about any social issue, I don't know what is.

Remember when you told me Pokemon was a clear cut example of a dystopian world?

I've been sincerely wondering if there's really anything more to it than that.

The teams have "philosophies". Team Valor (red) is that you train your Pokemon hard and make them the best. Team Mystic (blue) is that Pokemon are deep and smart and there's a lot of mystery to them that we need to unfold. Team Instinct (yellow) is that you should use your instincts.

      So, team yellow is stupid.

And team blue is a bunch of dumb hippies.

      RED TEAM!

Not sure this has been mentioned already... but there's some online trackers that will show you all the pokemon that in your area, and how long until they despawn.

I'd feel bad looking at it, if the tracker wasn't busted. But damn, if this is what's REALLY in my area, what the heck is showing up on my tracker?! It's a pokedesert out there!

Is there a way to get commas in the note? I know you're using secure(), just unsure if there's some way to get around that, which doesn't strip out our commas.
