RE: Learning Ruby for Ares
My intro to Ares was mostly just tinkering with the existing game, to change a few things I wanted different, or do some early bug fixes. Really, though, Faraday has a tutorial on how to build a plugin from ground up. A simple plugin, but still one that would be very useful in-game (which I did use!). Definitely suggest that, if you're wanting to learn Ares, and by proxy, Ruby.
If you're the Thenomain type and cannot stand the "do this now, understand it later" approach to learning, then you probably want some of the classes that Faraday's suggested before moving into the "How to Ares".

RE: Welcome to Chontio! A Star Wars MUSH
Chontio is officially down. The game mostly went down in April of '19, but I didn't have the heart to actually take down the server until today. So, if anyone stumbles across this advert, please know it's no longer working!
Also, AresMUSH has a very handy feature that parses your entire wiki (including character pages and logs) into HTML (thank you @faraday , you're awesome), which I've used. If anyone is curious about any old scenes, you can feel free to let me know.

RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows
@Ninjakitten Just to be clear... the windows store version doesn't update on restart of the game. At least mine didn't. It was a day or three before the new version came.

RE: ITT: Names You Always See
Damion, Daimon, Damien, and all other spellings.
Dante or some spin off Dante.
And you gotta have a name with a Z in it.

RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows
If you DL Beip from the Windows Store, it's logged as a Windows Game and integrates with all the various Windows Gaming features... which I honestly didn't know existed until Beip! That said, @Arkandel seems to have got it.

RE: Whatever Happened To Star Wars MU*s?
Chontio still exists! Technically. Because I've not had the time to box it all up for safe keeping. So... you can feel free to browse the wiki! http://chontio.aresmush.com/
When we made Chontio, I was aiming for a very original story set in the Star Wars universe. My hope was to pull far enough away from the extended Star Wars lore that casual fans could feel comfortable in the world, yet still have it be authentically Star Wars. I aimed right in between the Star Wars fanatic and the average MUer.
I missed both groups.
Were I to do it again, I'd not use FFG. As Faraday says, people want ships and guns and fiddly systems that I didn't have (and didn't want). People want that grit of a Star Wars game, which includes the books and books of lore and history. I didn't have this, and more than a few players left exactly because of this.
On the other end, players were turned off by having to learn a new system that is, imo, horrible for a MU. No fault of Faraday, she did a great job implementing it. It's just not a MU-friendly system.
Were I to redo this, I'd have used FS3 and tweaked it. As @Warma-Sheen said, we used very mild force powers, wherein it was rare but everyone could have access... no way you couldn't easily redo that (as Grey-Harbor has done with glimmer).
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY... In order to run a MU, you need some really good staffers and some really dedicated players. Most of the people who offered to help me never did (shout out to @farfalla and @Brunocerous for did a LOT of helping!). Most of the players who were most excited left the fastest.
Still love Star Wars. Still think it's a great setting for a MU world, which allows enough tech to feel modern, yet enough antiquity to capture some of that "wild west" old style world.

RE: What Types of Games Would People Like To See?
@Lotherio said in What Types of Games Would People Like To See?:
Even the want of SW but in another sector not featured in the books so the players become the heroes of the rebellion or whaterver was brought up here, but @Skew has that one going on Ares, using FFG(?)
Not having read ANY of this thread besides that and the title...
We (Alex where are you? ;-; ) created our own world specifically to divorce it from the greater Star Wars universe, so players could make their own stories, as you said, but also so players didn't feel obliged to know all the canon material.
I fairly obviously missed the mark, in that non-Star Wars players were still feeling left out, excluded, behind the curve, while the Star Wars players were perpetually annoyed that things were not as they ought to be. I tried to find the middle ground and ended up shooting right past both groups.
Also, people really, really, really wanted a focus on weapons, armor, gear, ships, etc. We didn't have the code (nor the desire) to focus on that, and it left a lot of people disappointed.

RE: What to do when your mush is attacked
No one should have to deal with misogynist assholes, so I'm giving this a bump.
I'll add a bit of a "quick version" for TinyMux...
@boot *Idiot
would get the hypothetical horrible person off your game. You can then@newpassword *Idiot=newpassword
to effectively stop them from connecting again. Though if you're feeling extra petty, you can instead give them the @Thenomain special, and do:@boot *Idiot
then@aconnect *Idiot=think Why am I like this?; QUIT
This is super fun because every time the person connects, it'll send the message after "think" to them, then they'll quit, all before they have time to do anything. If they want to waste your time, you can waste some of theirs!
Now, should said misogynstic asshole (who will remain totally nameless) think he (usually he) is particularly clever and start using VPNs and the like to change IPs and sidestep your ban, you do have the option to "require registration". To do this, you'll want to go into the
netmux.conf
file, just as Ashen-Shugar has outlined above, and addregister_site
. You should end up with something like this:# Sitebans #EXAMPLE: forbid_site 123.123.123.123 255.255.255.255 register_site 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
If you do this, the "create name password" option upon logging in will be disabled. If you do this, you should update the
register.txt
file located at<game>/etc/text
... this is the file players will see upon connecting. If they have an existing player/staff bit, they can log right in. Otherwise, the file will tell them to e-mail and ask for an account. You then only need to do@pcreate name=password
from a wiz bit and send them that information. Yes, this is likely a hinderance to new players, but as a temporary measure it's very effective. Finally, I just want to note that when you use
who
or+finger
to find out the address of an individual, it often displays like123-123-123-123-theirhost.net
or something. If you're entering that IP as a ban, you need to convert that to123.123.123.123
... and JUST the numbers, not the "theirhost.net".And as a final, final note... No one should have to deal with misogynistic assholes making threats and causing stress. PennMUSH and Rhost have active communities that are very willing to help. Ares and Evennia are still "new" and all have discord channels and test servers. If you're on TinyMUX, please feel free to reach out to me or @Thenomain. Someone you know surely has our contact information, or you can message here.

RE: How to use Potato MU Client
@Rinel Hate to be "that guy"... but you might want to just move to Beip.
https://musoapbox.net/topic/2676/how-to-beipmu-the-best-mu-client-for-windows
It has all the features of Potato, and then some. Most importantly it's actively developed and has great support.

RE: (Online RP) Dark Age: Redemption, an Ultima Online Shard
@deadculture A lot.
In brief history... Dark Age started in year 2000, I think, and it was using mostly an "out of the box" emulator. The map was a copy of the T2A map with the main cities changed, but otherwise a copy of the existing UO stuff. Over the years we customized and customized.
The current iteration of DA is actually using the code from a game called Khaeros, and I'm not sure where it all originated. There was a robust community that shared code, and in the Khaeros system, it's all written in C++ (I think), instead of silly proprietary stuff, so it's much easier to get people to add new things. So, the Khaeros guys took what they could from the community but did a LOT of work on their own. 5-10 years of development went into this stuff.
We have active development going on now, as one of the players volunteered to redo the magic system. It'll be completely original and have super fun stuff like collecting souls and summoning demons!

RE: (Online RP) Dark Age: Redemption, an Ultima Online Shard
@deadculture There's no Vice Dungeons. There's likewise a totally different combat system, based on a level system (not individual skill gain). That said, there is a rather fun alchemy system wherein you make your own recipes/potions based on things you collect in the wild, collect off monsters, etc.

(Online RP) Dark Age: Redemption, an Ultima Online Shard
Does anyone remember Ultima Online? Before I started MUing, I was RPing on an RP-enforced UO server, ran by regular(ish) people. We hunted trolls, we told stories, we had fun. That started back in 2000... Now, after a few years hiatus, Dark Age is back!
The RP in this environment is no MUing by any stretch, but it is decidedly deeper than the RP you find on many MMOs. Characters have thorough backgrounds, the plot is ever developing, the gameplay is meant to be immersive. Dark Age is set in a world where trolls and undead prowl, magic is uncommon and feared, and the nobility fight to maintain order in a Federation shakily rebuilt from the ashes of a formerly great kingdom.
Anyone who's interested can go here: http://da-redemption.com/ ... There's a link to the Discord channel, which is probably the best place to start if you've never played Ultima Online before. You can also message me here, I'm more than happy to answer questions.
And now some samples of what the game looks like:

@Wretched what's ctrl+p do?
If it's "store what's in the input box" that's ctrl+down.

RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows
@Derp said in How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows:
So I recently downloaded this, figured I would give it a shot. One thing that Potato does that I like, which I cannot figure out how to do here, is the ability to automatically set up logging and have them split by character by month.
Does Beip support auto-logging, and if so, is there a way to adjust the way that logs are handled? I see the logging window, but the options seem a bit limited.
When you set up a new character, you'll set up the auto-logging. I have instructions above, but...
Log File...
: Click this, browse to where you want your log file saved, and then enter the name of the log file, such as arx_mycharactername.txt. You'll then choose Append current date to log file name so you have a daily log.You should see that when you add a new character. This, of course, requires you to add characters. There's no way to set up logging per world, and auto-append the name of the character you log in with.

RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows
My own double reply...
How to regain your numpad
By default, the keyboard macros map your numpad to the cardinal directions (north, south, etc). This is intentional, as many games use directions quite heavily. But we in the MUSH world do not! So...
- Options -> Macros... -- They're there. Delete them.
Beip has noted more people ask for this to be removed than get use out of it, so they'll be removed from the default in the next release (and are already removed in the latest beta).

RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows
@krmbm @Ninjakitten @Rucket The Beip Dev (Bennet) is reading this thread now and then. Just doesn't have an account to reply. He's open to adding a feature to move the tabs to top if folks find it that jarring.
And for Ninjakitten specifically, there's no way to turn off the "auto copy on highlight", but I'll be sure to pass the suggestion along (even if he did already read it).
