Please be clear about mod voice, or when you're not using it while you're telling people what to do.
Please stop telling people to stop behaviors that aren't against the rules, particularly sharing personal stories in the Hog Pit. HOG PIT. PERSONAL STORIES. NOBODY WAS EVEN BEING PICKED ON.
Please stop threatening people with bans because they object to how modding is being so inconsistent.
Please stop saying 'you asked for this' every time somebody brings up a problem with the HOW modding is being done.
Please stop trying to silence criticism with 'well, we aren't perfect'.
Please stop asking us to just trust you as a response to 'THIS BEHAVIOR RIGHT HERE IS IS PROBLEM'.

I work for a tribe. Thanksgiving is not at all awkward here. It is a family focused holiday, and family is the thing. It's way different in other places in the country, obviously, this culture is way different than non-Salish tribes. But. "Celebrating" Thanksgiving as a time to get together with family and count our blessings doesn't make you a bad person. If you really are serious and upset about it, spend the holiday learning the history of one of your local tribes. Find out what issues they are facing, and see what you can do to help.

Learning (and teaching) the ACTUAL history of people is one of the things to do about the holiday.

ETA: Let me clarify that I don't object to the potshots, I object to the 'free to', as in, she does it, any of us respond, and one of the other mods mod-voices as US for responding to her nastiness. This is not the first example of it happening recently, it is only the clearest and most recent.

It's not that I disagree with the general sentiment -- let the dead rest, keep the things separate -- it's the timing and nature of how this came across. The issue here is that there was a rape trial the guy bought his way out of, which makes people pretty sensitive. Previously, when people have commented on issues that dead people have had, there has been discussion, good and bad. When the rape thing is brought up, the conversation is shut down and 'keep it separate' NOW becomes an issue. I don't disagree that it is an issue, but I am upset that it is only becoming an issue when it's someone's sports hero and the issue is rape. That hurts.

The skills that I have learned mushing / running games are highly valued in my place of employment. They are gaining me recognition and praise, and I am being sought out to do the things that I learned specifically, directly from my experiences mushing. (eta example: think writing policies, or handling complaints from troubled users with grace)

I basically got a raise because of this hobby. It's a sixty cent raise, which doesn't sound like much but in the world of government is huge.

I am also horrified by the court of public opinion. That is quite possibly the worst idea in the history of ideas for running a game that I have ever heard.

It's easy to be dismissive of people who are reacting to being attacked and silenced by being dismissive themselves, but I sure as fuck don't have time to bother with @Tyche and his extremity, or that of those like him. It's pointless. He's a condescending, sexist asshole who is personally responsible for doing some of the behaviors that women are talking about in this thread. He isn't here to discuss or learn.

Just because he thinks he has something to say doesn't actually mean it has any value, or that the rest of us have to engage him. Refusing to directly engage with an ass does not an ass make.

Are you intentionally ignoring the problems that were mentioned regarding this type of thing?

It's not about people not being thick-skinned or unable to be an adult on the receiving end of this, but individual cases aren't particularly something reportable, either. You can't discipline 40 different people for sending a 'you suck' message. There's nothing to 'nip in the bud' because it's just people not thinking on a wide scale, and they think its Perfectly Reasonable to get in on spitting in somebody's face. Their character would! It doesn't matter that 40 other people did it, too. And that's. Not. Fun.

My win today...

I taught an Excel class yesterday to people who, while intelligent and capable, are not computer literate. I've been there since March, and I've been steadily working at getting this group in general more comfortable with their computers, what they can do and what they shouldn't do, that sort of thing. So one of the guys was finally brave enough to take my Excel class. It was an exercise in patience for me, as much as I love doing it.

So as part of the 'steadily working at getting them more comfortable', I work Thursday afternoons in their building. So they know when to expect me to be there, and stop saving questions for weeks at a time until they corner one of the IS folks (because a lot of them feel that the questions are too stupid to e-mail, or not important enough to come to our building, and they don't want to bother us by calling...so they wait until they see someone and then get their lists out)...anyway. I work over there Thursday afternoons.

So I show up today and get settled, and the guy came RUNNING when he realized what time it was. 'I WANT TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING!!!' I followed him back to his office and he showed me the chart that he'd built -- all by himself -- in Excel. Then he asked me a million...hmm. Educated novice questions. Like, he took the time to read up on it and learn a bit more himself, and saved the parts that confused him to ask me about. I showed him how to find the Microsoft tutorials and he was GLEEFUL that he could go read more about it.

It was one of the most rewarding moments I've had at the job so far, and I've had some pretty good moments.

I think what bothers me about what you said is this:

Forgiveness is what it is, but I think a number of these "never forgive" instances, unless they involve actual fucked up OOC behavior, is often tied to something that isn't truly unforgivable with a cup of coffee and a heart to heart.

I can't think of a single genuine issue I have with someone that does not involve a severe violation of a boundary (mine or someone else's), severe (not minor, but severe) 'mean girl' behavior (guys do it just as bad, mind), and/or sexual harassment. Otherwise, I get irritated with somebody, and I move on. @surreality and I have fought like cats and dogs on a number of occasions both publicly and privately, and I do not even BEGIN to say: I have an issue with her. I don't. I don't think she has an issue with me. Not actual issues. She and I are a really good example, because I suspect most people would point and say there's a big thing there. There's not. That is the case all the way around here with most people. Actual, genuine, significant issues on the scale that actual forgiveness is involved?

We're talking things like Spider, man. Somebody forgetting to page me back gets FORGOTTEN, not FORGIVEN, because it is stupid and minor and doesn't need forgiveness in the first place.

ETA: Here's the thing:

Not wanting to spend my free fun time with people who irritated me in X or Y way?
This is not an issue, this is a preference as to who I spend my time with.

Not wanting to hook my PC up with a particular player's characters ever again?
This is not an issue, this is a preference as to who I spend my time with.

Not wanting to be in an org or faction run by a particular person?
This is not an issue, this is a preference as to who I spend my time with.

Me choosing to be choosy about my (very limited, even if it doesn't look that way on the surface) free time does not indicate an issue or a problem.

Could all of these things be easily resolved with discussion? Yeah, I guess, but just like IRL, I don't have to like and/or spend time with everybody. I don't have to be anyone's friend just because they exist. None of these things rise to the level of forgiveness even needing to be involved, because nobody did anything wrong. These are the minor/petty miscommunications and nonsense that are being referenced -- these are not the things referenced as needing to be FORGIVEN.

ETA2: Anyone needing a big dog and pony show about bestowing forgiveness related to minor, petty disagreements is the actual problem, not the bigger person and/or the solution. See: 'Mean Girl' behavior.

Characters do not have to feel safe. Characters can have risks, bad things happening to them, danger, all of that.

You still want your players to feel safe. Players, not characters. If the players can't feel safe to have fun / play, they won't.

If your intended audience is just people who can go balls to the wall all the time, who have an iron will and a strong stomach (so to speak), there's nothing inherently wrong with that. Please just make it very clear so that people who might be sensitive (to whatever thing, for whatever reason) know that they aren't welcome in the first place.

ETA: I am a "snowflake" and I am "triggered" by content involving both sexual assault and suicide. If this is something I have no recourse for avoiding on this game, I would want to know about it, so I don't get involved in the first place. I am using myself as an example because it's an easy one, and I know I'm not the only one, not because it's something I'm suggesting be addressed for me personally.

I'm disappointed, but I understand. I wish you guys all the best in the project. I'd had high hopes and was pretty jazzed, but the person I was planning on apping with is literally out of the country for another week. It really does suck to be shut out like this, even if I do get why it was done. Ow.

Hope the people who managed to get in in the less than 24 hours it was open have a good time.

ETA: It's probably for the best, really. If the movement on this game is going to be anything approaching this level of need-for-responsiveness to keep up and or participate, I don't have time anyway.

I agree 100% with @faraday . Adding more things to manage when the rules we have aren't even being enforced, I have no faith that the rules on a wiki would be enforced any better than those on the forum, and a wiki is super bad potential for badness. I am of the opinion that you should wait until you have what you are doing currently working right before you add more to it.

I find your post gross, and I find it doubly gross that you posted it in this thread. If you want to stir things up like that, maybe go start your own thread in the hog pit.
