But right now, I really want to be able to trust the forum at large to behave and keep to posting in approved areas without having to use other tools that require a lot of extra work on the mod's part. We're all adults. We should be able to go 'Oh, AnotherMUX put up an ad thread? I wanna talk about it. I should go see if there's a thread in Constructive.'

I agree. You should be able to set the rules down and have people follow them, without needing code enforcement. I imagine there might be a month or three of people forgetting and posts being deleted before people 'get' it. I think making it more complex mostly means more work for the admins/more potential problems/headache as people trying to follow the rules are interfered with by code, and so on. There's a legitimate reason to leave threads unlocked (staff changeover is the big one) but telling people to not post unless (rules, whatever they end up being). People can make their own threads. They will, if that's the requirement. A tiny amount of work on our part to outweigh a million instances of tiny amounts of work adding together into a mountain for the admin.

I really like the direction of things here. The new forum category is aces, and the ideas being generated here are great things. I'd change my vote if it would let me!

I think it's fair to say that people are going to lose their shit no matter what choices the mods ultimately make. I am of the opinion that this should not be a deciding factor in what they end up doing, cos seriously.

In order of importance for me:

      1. What CAN they do, mentally, emotionally, and physically? What do they have time and energy for?

      2. What board do they want to run? What does that look like?

      3. What role do they want this board to have in the community?

You'll notice that nowhere in there do I even include my own desires. I honestly think that as long as we ultimately get some clarity and consistency with the above, as long as these things are communicated, whatever we end up with would be great.

Pretty sure some of us have the worm song playing on auto-repeat in our heads.

(Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms...)

      That isn't just you.

I am very, very sorry for my part in that. The way that I handled my issues was unfair to you. I am sorry that I hurt you.

      @arkandel

Something I think would really help is to consider two things:

      1. Reporting tools can (and are often) used as a form of griefing

      2. Lots of people don't actually hit 'report' when perhaps they should

Taking those things into consideration for the creation of both policies and in how they are enforced would probably go a long way towards resolving the types of things that have given me the impression of unfair/uneven moderation.

You absolutely cannot change how I feel about this, no. You CAN help keep other people from feeling this way going forward, though.

      @KDraygo

It's good advice and something for me to keep in my tiny little brain when I'm trying to parse through some of this stuff. Thanks for bothering to answer that question, and for doing so with grace. I genuinely appreciate it.

This isn't the time or place to engage in this discussion. I do not think you understand my point, but thankfully I think the mods do. If you would like to speak with me about my emotional investment or personal health, you are more than welcome to DM me.

I don't disagree with you. Thus, I quit mushing and scaled my involvement here way back. I'm on my way out, but as I said, I care a great deal for the community and the people in it, and it is difficult to cut the last tie. The question was asked about moderation here, so I gave my emotionally vulnerable and very personal reply that spoke to said question.

That people I care about being mean to me hurts my feelings is pretty normal. The trick is to stop caring about other folks more than they care for me. If you know the answer as to how to do that, please do share.

Because I am. I get super snarky, and I'm sure I'd forget on occasion. Except I have zero faith that it would be consistently enforced, so the heavier moderation would smack me in the nose, while the people who are actively being mean to me...la la la, continue on their way.

Here's my point of view: You feel like this, and so do the people you think are just happily going on their way. Everyone feels singled out when it's their turn.

The line between consistent enforcement and perceiving that enforcement is more unfair to (generic) you than the others is pretty thin.

It's like sports, where players saying that referees should play it 50/50 means they should play it 90/10. It's a human trait; if you ask Tim Duncan he never commited a foul in his career.

Or to rephrase it; it's not my intention to discriminate. I have no incentive to fake playing favorites.

I am well aware of people and the tendencies involved just from them being people. It has been independently commented on more than once, on occasion from someone I wasn't even talking to at the time (somebody going out of their way to communicate their sympathy/empathy to me over something, as a conversation opener).

Just because people have a tendency to assume bias and just because enforcement does tend to seem uneven doesn't mean that un-evenness of said enforcement can't happen. This is not in my head or something that I have made up or imagined.

If you genuinely do give a damn about how I feel about this, maybe stop dismissing me out of hand and consider why I might actually feel this way.

I'm tired of the way that I've been treated by both the mods and some key vocal posters. I'm not wanted here and I'm well aware of this fact (which should make it easier to just walk, but it doesn't).

I don't think there is anyone on the forum that I don't want to be around. It certainly isn't you.

Just because we've disagreed it doesn't mean you're unwanted. What good is MSB if it's an echo chamber?

Man, actions speak louder than words. It's not just my imagination, either. Even so -- if that IS the case -- I absolutely FEEL unwelcome because of the inconsistent enforcement of the rules. I would LOVE heavier moderation, even knowing I'm going to get smacked on the nose. Because I am. I get super snarky, and I'm sure I'd forget on occasion. Except I have zero faith that it would be consistently enforced, so the heavier moderation would smack me in the nose, while the people who are actively being mean to me...la la la, continue on their way.

I am one of the people that feels the way that @Ganymede mentioned: it is OK to heap BS in my direction, I am an acceptable punching bag, and for good fun the mods like to join in sometimes. Because they have. And it's NOT fun to realize that the people that are your recourse for being able to participate in the community are among the people that are handing out torches.

    • RE: Hello MSBites! Grade your administrators.

The only reason I'm here is because I care about some of you people and the relationships I've built in my ridiculous number of years in the hobby. I read some of the threads out of lingering interest in the topics, but I am working towards getting rid of my emotional investment -- in this board and in the hobby as a whole. I'm tired of the way that I've been treated by both the mods and some key vocal posters. I'm not wanted here and I'm well aware of this fact (which should make it easier to just walk, but it doesn't). I don't have any suggestions for improvement or fixing things; I stopped believing that was possible a while ago, and even if I did have ideas, I have absolutely no expectation they'd be considered, given the source. So why bother even thinking about it?

My health is improving to the point where I could probably come back to the hobby without losing my tiny little mind again, but I never quite get past the point of thinking about it, because the people I used to want to play with ... well. From the position of having taken my first steps back, I can't figure out why I would want to subject myself to the way that people treat each other on games. I used to be better at not caring about the shit people were saying on discord and here and whatever, but I am old and I am tired and I no longer have the energy to do the things I would need to do to combat the whisper campaigns.

So instead, what time/effort does go towards the remnants of this hobby mostly go towards trying desperately to stop caring at all about it.

ETA: I've long had a habit of caring a lot more for people than they do for me. It's both blessing and curse. Until recent years, I was better about being OK with it. Age or circumstance has made it a lot harder for me to swallow. It is what it is; this tribe is no longer my tribe. Coming to terms with it is rough. For the 'haters' out there, never fear. I cannot imagine it'll be more than a month or two before I wander away much more consistently.

'If you aren't here at start, you can't automagically join the scene. If you would like an exception to this, you may explain briefly to the staffer running the scene why said exception should be made. As with other rule challenges and issues, the answer they give you is final. If you wish to appeal, you can do so after the conclusion of the scene, via an appeal to headstaff, as you would do with any other rule issues.'

Removes the possibility for the posse coming from every corner of the galaxy, but allows for 'hey I live in this damn house and haven't been anywhere else in a week' still.

ETA: Some issues you cannot solve with more rules, and instead have to solve with a combination of communication and judgment.

Yeah and they had set up things fairly well for the City of Shade returning it was a plot point definitely hinted at. though a lot of the events after that seemed to be designed to clear the deck of most of the well known NPCs which to me was the main draw of the setting.

Yeah, they wanted to make the setting more accessible and blah blah missed the point of it blah blah. ^^

I have to agree there. I have also thought the sweetest spot in the Forgotten Realms timeline is just after the Time of Troubles.
I have ran things set after 1372 DR but when I do I make it a point to give the players my games timeline and tell them to ignore the official one past that date.

That is precisely what I do. 'We deviate at 1372....'

ETA: I am actually OK with the City of Shade appearing itself and some of those pieces, but about half the content from that IC year and then going forward....nope. Nope, nope, nope.

This is one I hadn't thought of. I love Buffy. And its actually a rather complicated system to code, which is a plus in context here. Hmm.
