RE: Character 'types'
Almost all of my characters are emotionally scarred. Be it a Sire that tortured their sanity away, or an uncle that fed them people flesh, hyper-demanding parents of a perfectionist noble house, or cultist parents that promised them to the Devil, they are all fucked up, but they are all curious about the other, "normal" side of the fence. Sometimes that curiosity is macabre (like if I am playing a Vampire or something similar), and more often than not just makes themweirdos trying to adjust.
And no, most of times I don't judge you for the characters you play. I will only judge you if you bring that shit to OOC channels and try to act like some condescending Invictus asshole while we are talking about Transformers. Then I will just assume you don't have a character, and that the Invictus asshole you "RP" ICly is just an avatar for your own idiotic behavior. Don't get high on your own supply.

RE: Fallen World MUX!
@Songtress We are still working on solving some problems with the CG, but soon enough we will be opening the game for those interested in breaking it down to join us there! We hope it happens in the coming days, but RL has been nagging our coders!

RE: #WIDWW pt 2 - ST, Player, or staff?
I have never ran into issues with staff bitching about my campy stuff. I don't really think most staff even reads logs posted on their wikis, and those that do rarely go "Hey this group is having fun, fuck em up".
I think this is a total nonissue.
The problem with camp only comes when it polutes theme. For example, making a League of Doom composed by Bale Hounds, Strix, Cursed Mummies, Praecipati and Critters for your plot. That shit needs to be nipped at the bud and I love me some Critters.

RE: Fallen World MUX!
@Pyrephox I don't mind! I like reading the discussion and the input is great for the game!
On other news, coding is going super swimmingly now, and we are in a 2 week timetable to open. It could take slightly more, because that is how RL tends to roll, and it will hardly take LESS, but you never know. Anyways, SOON!
I would like to take advantage of the number of people around to ask if there are creative souls out there willing to be Staff STs! You don't need to come up with plots, although that is always good, and all I ask is that you are not insane and can run a scene per month to people outside your group! Ideally I would like one for each Order, but finding 5 storytellers could prove daunting.
Anyone interested in doing this, lemme know, please! The game already rewards players for taking the mantle of scene runners, but Storytellers would, ideally, take care of those people who don't have a group of friends to run stuff for them, and make Big Plot scenes that could change how the game works.

RE: New Project?
@tempest 2e has no content. The only 2e game I would be tempted by is Vampire, but Vampire... is Vampire.

RE: Open Dates of New Games?
@Haven said in Open Dates of New Games?:
@SunnyJ said in Open Dates of New Games?:
Fallen World (Mage-only CofD) is in a 2 week time table now, so 24th~30th?
This should be sooner so we can marvel over the window dressing. IMO.
I don't want to get your hopes up too much, but coding has gone... incredibly fast these few days. We might be ahead of those predictions!

RE: Horror MUX - Discussion
@botulism You can't stop cliques for sure, I don't think, you can only hope people are interested in each other enough they play with each other. In a cooperative game this is easier than, lets say, WoD where "everyone is out to fuck you up and shit on your fun". Nothing wrong with trying, though.

RE: Fallen World MUX!
@Arkandel @Haven We will be testing CG in the next few days, and if it everything goes well with THAT... we will be opening the doors this weekend for you guys to come in, poke around, plan stuff, ask stuff! If nothing is broken despite all the testing, we will be taking apps by then, as well!

RE: I owe a lot of people some apologies.
That is a lesson that is hard to learn, but well worth learning.

@skew said in Bump In The Night: A Chronicles of Darkness MUX:
And just to clarify a further, @surreality did offer to take over paying for BITN, which TJ decided he didn't want. (And, best I can tell, this had nothing to do with surr in particular, and was a general desire to see the game end.) Afaik, surr was simply offering to take over paying for it, if that was the reason behind closing it. Oh, and, also, she wanted her pretty wiki to stay up and available to the public.
For all its worth, that wiki will forever live in my heart, no matter what. u___u

RE: House Rules vs Rules as Written
I think part of the reason why many systems and character concepts dont work is because we throw players in a MU and expect tabletop systems to function in a completely different environment they were designed for.
IMO House Rules should be used shift the already faulty and unbalanced tabletop mechanics to a MU environment, so I guess Im in the small camp that believes they should be used more.
Also... "poluting the community with expectations" seems to be a community problem not a HR problem?

Fallen World 2.0
Hello, everyone!
Earlier in the year we concluded the ‘Season One’ of the game’s plot with the Pentacle gaining a permanent foothold in Manhattan. Now the power vacuum left by the absence of the more powerful magi of the Iron Pyramid has allowed the Consilium to become a stable institution in the island, while also making the five Orders directly responsible for keeping the encroaching darkness the Seers of the Throne controlled at bay.
As the shadows creep from the corners of the world, and the streets and Shadow teem with entities that threaten the balance of things, the Forsaken of the Clear Skies protectorate make their appearance in the concrete jungle of Manhattan, untouched by the Sacred Hunt for far too long. Behind the world Herd pretends to be true, werewolves return to remember their ancient enemies why the whole Shadow feared Father Wolf.
Fallen World is an action/horror Mage: The Awakening and Werewolf: The Forsaken 2nd Edition game set in Manhattan, an island that Sleeps when Mother Moon rises and night falls. In the dead of the night Herd cowers in their homes, praying whatever makes the strange noises outside doesn’t come in. Players take the role of the Awakened, Forsaken, and some other stranger creatures that belong in the dark.
After the end of Season One we paused the game for a while and worked quite a bit on player feedback given to make sure to improve Fallen World. If you want to try out the gameline formerly known as World of Darkness for the first time, or if you want a place that does things just a bit crazier, this might be the place for you!
Check us out at fallenworldmux.com // 1984
In the following weeks we will be processing apps and asking for player feedback on some stuff to kickstart Season Two! Come on over, meet some cool people, ask questions if you have them! We ould love to have you!

RE: Brainstorming: Hybrid/Homebrew Werewolf Game
ohgodohgodohgodohgod.
Okay. Lets do this. First off, I would mostly go for an updated Apocalypse game with nWoD systems. Because of that, I would either set the game in a besieged caern in a large city (Sept of the Green) or a rural sept close to a big, oWoD city with smog and towering spires.
-
I would get rid of the Forsaken Tribes and Pure Tribes altogether. They are interesting in their own 'struggle of the daily life as a werewolf' world that is Forsaken, but they have very little place in a Werewolf the Apocalypse game. The Gaian Tribes have all the flavor and infighting you could possibly ask, and you could make their lodges almost like religious cults within. Like, the Mjonir's Thunder could be this sect of the Fenrir who forsake their names and abandon pack and family to join the Lodge. They don't talk with non-Mjonir Fenrir, and act on the fringe like religious fanatics with their own rituals and missions.
-
Make use of Morality (Harmony) but adapt it to the Garou. If the Forsaken are children of the Pangean-Concept of Hunt, then the Garou should have a Harmony morality that focuses on them being warriors. Why would I do this? Because if corruption is a theme of the game, and we are making use of WoD, it feels interesting to me that something measures the toll this corruption takes on you. I love the idea that the fight against this 'Wyrm' is as personal and internalized as it can be fought with tooth and claw. It adds another layer to an otherwise 'hack and slash'-bent system that is Werewolf the Apocalypse.
-
Read and use the LARP Werewolf book that just came out. Not only it has a dynamic social system for the Septs, it also modernizes the Tribes, camps, politics, everything. The Tribes and the protectorate dynamics are the best in it, but man, there is a lot of win in that book.
-
Use the Shadow. The Umbra, with all its Realms, etc, is super amazing, but the spirits of the Umbra are terrible. They are very passive and feel like Sonic critters, waiting for the Garou to save them. The Shadow feels more primal, and in the end, if Gaia is the spirit of the planet/universe, she isn't necessarily good. She is balance, and that means some things eat, some things get eaten. Maybe if you expanded that to a greater theme, you could shift away from the Garou being HEROES and being more like forces of nature like I feel they should be.
-
Make an unique grid. Use the book of the Wyrm/Pentex to make the grid WoD. Don't put farmacies, put a Siren Cosmetics store! No random gyms, make a MagaGym. No toy stores, make them Avalon Toys, and no McDonalds, build O'Tolley's!
Anyways, that is all for now. I know you hade a more Forsaken-oriented merge, but hey. This is brainstorming too! >__>

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
@Ganymede Best Lantern after this legend.
On topic, I think people hit the nail on the head early on. X-Men has two antagonistic groups that can also be allies, plenty of characters and backgrounds, and many tones to explore. You can got to space, prehistory, alternate timelines, talk about a lot of current subjects, TP professor Summer's car, etc. Would vote X-Men easily.
DC/Gotham could also work, but you lose the 'contrasting viewpoints' dynamism, and the power scale goes all over the place.

RE: Scion: Origins
@zombiegenesis When it comes to RPGs I always seem to compare how steep is the learning curve versus the fun I will get from actually mastering the system.
Many White Wolf/OPP games just feel... needlessly complicated while bringing almost nothing to make learning said systems worth your time. It has always been like this, oWoD or nWoD, but it wasn't until I hit Promethean 2nd Edition that this dawned on me.
OPP/White Wolf seems obsessed with paths, auspices, clans, entitlements, contracts, pledges, gifts, rites, blood sorcery, rotes, praxes, clans, transmutations, keys, etc, and... there is no real gain from making things so complex, especially when they are notorious for fucking balance up? It even keeps new players at bay. I cannot, in my right mind, recommend Promethean 2e to anyone who doesn't LOVE systems.
Like, if I remember correctly, Scion 1e was using a simplified version of their Exalted 2e system. The sheets were simple to make, and it seemed what someone wanting to play Scion would want. Going this complex over a game with a power cap as crazy as Scion's seems like OPP shooting itself on the foot again.

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
My suggestions:
Theme: Feared and Persecuted
I know people dig their heroics, but the O5 (Original Five) felt to me like a necessity, a response of a species that needed protecting instead of a group of superheroes. When you put the X-Men as a struggling minority fighting for acceptance is where they are best, and it brings the characters together. When the world outside is dragging obvious mutants across the streets tied to pickup trucks, you make all aspects of your fight (philosophical, physical, etc) that much more important. The Brotherhood believes that without action, mutants will be killed off, and the X-Men think too much aggression will put them firmly AGAINST humanity, and provoke a conflict nobody wants. Set the game in the pre-Onslaught Era (Good Old Cartoon Show, more or less) or Post 198 (Where all mutants were depowered by the Scarlet Witch and only 198 are left).
This makes the grid (either the Mansion or Utopia) matter, it makes the superheroes of the setting matter (what the fuck are THEY doing), it makes other characters matter (so few you can't really just say 'fuck off and die' even to your enemies), that sort of stuff.
Also, I like it, and that is VERY important.
Roster: Year Two
Let people write their own versions of Cyclops and Wolverine, for as long as they obey some pre-established notions written in the wiki. Stuff like 'Cyclops must be this age or older'' or 'Angel has been a Horseman by this point' and then general guidelines 'No player may erase family members of a character during CG as determined by Earth-616 continuity', stuff you NEED to make the game work. Stuff that will diminish the effects of 'Who is this OC living inside my favorite X-Men's character's body' and still allow for some creativity.Villains: When To?
The Brotherhood needs work. They need a home, they should have a structure for RP that lets them have friends, family, lovers and rivals among the X-Men and RP between them should be facilitated. However, some villains should be earned, imo, by Storytellers who prove they are capable of providing RP for the grid on a consistent basis. Characters like Sabretooth, Mystique and Mister Sinister should either be plot tools, or taken by people who know what they are doing and will help the game. I am a huge believer in not closing any doors, and being meritocratic. If players go the extra mile, maybe the game should find some wiggle room to allow some experimentation.Young X-Men
PLEASE do allow them. Mercury, Rockslide, X-23 are all great characters. I am not hot on OCs either, and I am much more prone to teach as Nightcrawler, Emma or Gambit if it is a FC student. I am not saying BAN OCs, but OCs need to understand they are fighting an uphill battle and not resent other players for it. It would be unfair to hate people for not liking OCs, as it would be unfair to ban OCs altogether.Enough Talk, Lets Game!
Lots of talking! Is this game gonna happen?! Or are we just babbling here?! -
RE: Interest Check - Armageddon MUX (A Unisystem Urban Horror Game)
@zombiegenesis Good luck, man! Hope you can salvage your stuff.

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
This is my take on the OC vs FC thing.
OCs should not expect to have people lining up to play with them just because they got approved by staff. Other players are not evil, or assholes, if they are just not interested in your new character when they have a sizeable selection of other characters who have been part, in some way, of their lives. Maybe they will turn around and give the OC a chance when they realize that just because someone picks Wolverine doesn't mean they can RP an interesting Wolverine, but getting angry over it, or even frustrated, is silly, imo.
I levy the same criticism towards people who pick famous characters like Xavier and complain nobody wants to RP with them when they make their Xavier a MovieVerse, Time Travelling, James McAvoy (<3) sly Professor. Although I really liked that character, I can see people wanting Good Ol' Charles in the mansion.
@Vorpal This is no Appeal to Tradition fallacy. This is 'I grew up with Iceman, and I want to interact with Iceman and be his best buddy for a few months'. OC Players cannot fight nostalgia with an OC and expect to win just on the merits of thinking they are awesome. I get they think their ideas are awesome, but sometimes other players just don't see it. Expecting everyone to be "OMG YES AN OC I NEVER MET BEFORE" to be the reaction, or else they are assholes, is just not fair, or reasonable, to say nothing of belittling just how much the love for some of these characters colors people's very desire to even play on Hero MUs. OCs sometimes have more difficult entry costs, and that is inherent to the nature of those games. Find the players like @Ganymede, who are plenty, and work from there! There are a lot of different people playing these games.
On customizing FCs:
I don't mind when people change their FCs a little, or if the Wolverine in the game is a left-leaning Bernie Sanders supporter or Emma Frost is just starting a new line of shoes for mutants with Jumbo Carnation. What I am interested in seeing is how the other player got to that point by following what I think are the 'guidelines' of that character's personality. If someone RPs Cyclops as some dumb jock who loves memes and slips on a banana peel every day he walks into the Danger Room, I would surely stop RPing with him.
Want to RP a bi Cyclops who has forsaken his laser beams and is learning Comic Book Kung Fu with Psylocke because he recently killed an innocent mutant? I am all in.
