      This is partly why I ask so many times about the things people think newbies should know.

      The answers tend to surface more in threads like this, and in peeve threads, than actual focused threads asking about these things, which speaks volumes about how subconscious most of these conventions really are.

      @lithium It's definitely more understandable then. I'd still ask first, though, to make sure this is comfy for someone... and I'm still one of those assholes who would nope this and just say use 'the other woman' or 'the blonde woman's' or 'the shorter female's' and so on if the shes get too out of hand and whatnot and something needs to get swapped in for names.

      Some people rock at a thing I might normally dislike as a default, so I'm rarely going to say 'I hate it when... '

      ...except second-person posing. Don't. Just don't. 😕 If only for the nightmare of editing those logs -- or worse, seeing them posted unedited, oh gods. That's probably the one I can't ever forgive.

      When it comes right down to it, I can even deal with snarky metaposing back and forth with someone I know and trust well and I know they're doing it OOCly in well-intentioned humor. (Namely, if the players have an amazing rapport and but the characters hate each other and the players are having comedic fun with that -- and it's usually really obvious when this is the case.)

      I have to second @Misadventure's concern here.

      The 1e->2e shift for WtF on Reno1 was a nightmare that resulted in a good number of people abandoning characters they loved but felt would no longer work.

      If you have an active playerbase with one set of rules that is enjoying the game and how things are going, the chance to attract a handful more with an upgrade is something you'll have to consider seriously, as there will be the ones you'll lose + all the work an upgrade entails.

      I can't fault anyone for having a visceral NOPE reaction to any of the spheres.

      All of them have generic hot buttons, which in some cases is enough.

      Each also draws certain negative player types because of some of the themes involved, and the result is equivalent to a chemical reaction that is unique to that sphere and what those players can specifically do in that sphere in intolerable ways.

      (Example: The 'must do all the things' player, annoying as fuck normally. Completely intolerable in mage.)

      Nobody should get browbeaten into adding spheres they don't want to, full stop, whatever their reasons. It almost never leads to good things and it's not cool even if it was the best idea since sliced bread.

      @taika Sadly, the hematite can't be done that way at home. I think they torch anodize it. It used to be INSANELY expensive here that way, then it started making it to the craft stores, but it's actually all over eBay more or less dirt cheap now if you don't mind long ship times from China. (There's one guy in NY I think... I would have to look.)

      I have a massive weakness for matte iridescent stuff. Shiny's ok, but the matte is like, triple the love at least, somehow.

      @taika Yeah, I feel you on that. It took me over a decade to finally make budget room for the setup -- and irony being what it is, this year's been so nuts I haven't had a chance to use any of it yet. (It all showed up about a month before I went into the hospital last year, which sorrrrrta put a hitch in all the plans.)

      I like using the heat-anodized hematite beads like these a lot, and similar-color seed beads...

      ...so going the titanium route blends best, and I can custom color stuff if I wanna... eventually.

      I like delicate stuff, and the hematite is HEAVY, so it needs something strong as hell for the links even if I'm just linking together wrapped beads, too. 😕

      @taika Titanium in 22 is solid as a rock, if the over all ring size is small. I get, uh... 22g 3/32, I think, as the generic standard size I tinker with (and when really masochistic, 24g 1/16). Both hold up in a box or byzantine as sturdy as the dickens. (I order the stuff like once every 5-6 years, so I always have to dig around to figure out which they are exactly.)

      The 24g,1/16... one wee ring at a time. With the... damn. They're Xurons, the pointy-nose-flat ones. Anything else and they just sproinnnnnng across the room like I'm trying to launch them into orbit, never to be seen again, every time. The Xurons drop that down to, uh, like, 1/4 of the time. 😕 Which is still expensively not good and stupidly frustrating.

      (This is what I get for thinking, 'oh, hey, this size would make a lovely alternative to boring silver snake chain for people who like those add a bead things... ' I mean, it works, but... masochism.)

      @taika I hate titanium for the same reason. I only use the teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeensy 22 and 24g sizes and holy shit, the hand cramps. 😐 If it wasn't for the pretty mottled rainbow matte-ness... it would be all the hate ever.

      @cupcake I was looking for a pic of one of the little outfits with the shoulderpads, and apparently one of the collector doll lines is making new dolls as well.

      Not the same. 😕 Do not how how I feel about this! Some looked nice, but. But. And probably WAY expensive (they are collector dolls, not play dolls).

      Admittedly, most of the people making (or who have in the past made) non-Barbie collector doll lines are pretty epic sweethearts, so I will still throw love at them on principle even if I can't throw money at them these days like I useta. 😄

      ETA: ...I may still have a weakness for Monster High dolls that I find on the cheap now and then that make me giggle or smile, because they're adorable as hell to my inner horror nerd and my inner toy nerd.

      @zobi We are doing a whole-house decluttering this year; if I run across any of them that might still be in boxes somewhere in the attic, I'll let you know. (We prefer to send things to good homes rather than toss them and yard sales/ebay are a giant pain in the ass.)

      @zobi They made some quality stuff, too. I kept some of it for a long time until I had to sell off a bunch of old stuff because it was just so well made I would still, as a costume geek adult, pull it out of its little box to make happy squeaky noises at it.

      ...they actually constructed shoulder pads in those tiny little Jem outfits!!! (Hey, it was the 80s... ) That was a level of detail that nobody was doing commercially at the time, and it always stood out to me as impressive as hell.

      @sg I really enjoyed it. Lots of happy kid memories in there, and lots of 'ooooooh, interesting!' for the harmless gossip-lovin' adult in me.

      I actually felt kinda bad they mocked poor Jem so hard, though. 😕 Many years ago, when in a much different financial position (the whole family was, really), I wanted to make a collectible fashion doll, and the person I worked with was one of the sculptors who worked on Jem, because I absolutely cannot physically sculpt for shit. She was a lovely person and was really pretty dang cool, even if that project ultimately never went anywhere. (The mold-maker we drove the sculpt halfway across the country to deliver it to apparently couldn't manage it, and disappeared with the prototype. Booooo.)

      I would actually love to see that series continue with some mention of how much 3d prototyping has changed things along the way, because boy howdy has it ever, and it's not as fun a story but some of that stuff is really pretty cool. There's a long-standing love/hate debate about this among BJD collectors last I bothered checking, but the versatility and quick production has let some of those companies start marketing to a more diverse audience that's more into model kits and action figures, which is kinda neat. (One of the companies had a booth at NYC Comic Con for a couple years, for instance -- dunno if they still do -- because of the crossover appeal of a lot of their stuff at the time.)
