RE: New Prospect MUSH
Full consent always makes me think about the little shits that don't like ICA=ICC. So Player A comes up and plays keep away with the werewolf's hat ( Player B ) in a scene Player B is in with some other people. If the werewolf says, "Cool, since you are being an idiot I'll punch you in the mouth." Player A can say, "Nope..." and then continue to ruin any semblance of fun that could have been going on.
The only recourse then is to what? Break up the scene, go to a private room where other "good" RPers can't join easily. Where does that lead us? Cliques?
Though I guess Player B can say, "No you can't take my hat, but then, what kind of RP are we having then?" Everything is constrained and horrible and shitty people will act shitty with no staff recourse to go through. Or would you still complain to staff who then become the RP Police?

RE: PVP games/elements?
@Derp said in PVP games/elements?:
One thing that has always bugged me about WoD PvP:
PvP != PK
It's possible to go up against a player and just beat the crap out of them without actually killing them. In fact, this should probably be the standard, with an actual PK being far less common. Having someone beat the hell out of someone is far less likely to result in blowback than if you kill a member of some faction.
But people just sort of naturally assume that death is the only outcome of combat. So weird. I have nothing against PvP, but I think that PK should be somewhat discouraged unless it's really the only logical outcome for the scene.
But then, people just come up with a reason to try and do mental gymnastics to justify why -their- character is some sort of frenzied maniac. It goes round and round.
I'd be interested in a game where PvP is actually encouraged, so long as actual PK is kept to sane levels.
Yeah I could see in Hunter the beat down being a bigger thing on the whole vs a straight murder. Maybe that's the key to the whole PK issue we've been trying to figure out. How do you stop just random PK by troublemakers that make no sense in the story? Maybe this is it? If you want to /finish him/ there is a tiny hoop to be jumped?

@Luna What NAT type does your PS4 show you have? Should be 1 , 2 or 3.

RE: CarrierRPI - a Survival Horror MUD
@DnvnQuinn What if in that same story they said they built giant ships called arks that only the richest and smartest could gain passage on...
Oh wait, that was already a movie...
What IF! There is a bunch of stuff in this fictional world like advanced tech, ancient fucking aliens or anything else? Just because we suck now doesn't mean we'll suck in our fictional future.

RE: [Poll in OP] Population Code

This term has entered my RP vocabulary: "Are we RPing time/weather?" Almost every game I've RP'd on since the banishment of the dreaded "Nightzone" flag has had people either RPing game time or clarifying the conditions in their initial pose.
Whereas that term isn't in my vocabulary because I can count on one hand the number of times people were heeding the IC time/weather in their scenes. And I can't really blame them.
Bob and I want to RP, and our chars have little in common ICly other than they both like Pyramid (BSG basketball-ish sport). Ooops, can't play Pyramid because +weather says it's raining outside. So much for that idea.
Another day, we want to meet up, except +time says it's Monday at 2pm and we'd both be ICly working at our separate jobs that have no reason to intersect. Oh well. Guess I'll just watch TV instead.
I understand the converse argument is that these are fun obstacles to challenge your creativity or whatever, but here's the thing... I have enough challenges in my life. I really don't need code throwing obstacles in my way. It's annoying, so I ignore it.
What if you just +weather/set or +time/set for the room...?

@surreality said in Alternate CoD/WoD Character Growth / XP Systems:
@acceleration Part of the issue with the fear-based conditions is that a few of them include things like 'deliberately fail a roll' or 'do something that hinders the group'. Often enough, the rest of the group, OOC, will jump your shit for simply playing to the limits of what your character knows (vs. what you know as the player) that might lead them to making the wrong choice or a mistake, no matter how IC that action is -- when you're stuck with one of those conditions, it can be tricksy at best to handle it in a way that is not going to get you practically crucified OOC.
This is so true, but maybe its time we make a conscious effort to put people in their place for that type of behavior. So often we have people jump on the bandwagon for a number of things to "shame" or "talk down" players but this type of situation is rarely addressed in game. It is a part of the game...

RE: RL peeves! >< @$!#
@Glitch In defense of @Luna and my post I focused on "The Fast Lane". Like others have said I've driven all over the US and World and learned a lot about driving. But being back in Southern Cali I've been screaming at slow drivers on the 405 in the "fast lane" going slower than the flow of normal traffic.
I turn into Samir from Office Space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enzJUemPYeU <-- Potentially NSFW due to the use of profanity.

Yeah, watch this.
@ThatOneDude, you come across to me as a lot more of an Achiever than a Socializer, with a hint of Killer. (Okay, maybe just toward me, but anyway.) I can understand why you might have troubles settling into some Mushes as there is not enough for you to do, the PvE elements not hitting you the right way. I don't have an answer, per se, but I see part of your question as partially "why aren't I having fun". It's a question I ask myself all the time.
I may be wrong in my guesswork, but that's not the important part. I continue.
But why doesn't a small game have more achievement? It has less socializing, which itself turns to less socializing (watch the video), which leads to more people sitting waiting to do something. I think BitN does a pretty good job of creating an atmosphere where anyone who wants to run events without the drawback of having to jump through hoops. In that way, BitN is extremely successful, and I think the staff was counting on this creating the popularity that would create an upward feedback spiral.
Perhaps they need more proactive explorers (e.g., writers)? An interesting thought. Anyhow.
I love PK! No one else really enjoys it for the fun it can be though
It doesn't have to be drama if we all just remember we're playing a fucking game. I didn't really kill you, or piss in your koolaid or call your mother a whore... My PC did >.>
Even to this day, the crew I use to mush with has turned into a group I play with on the PS4. We'll be running around doing whatever and someone will laugh and quote some event from the past in a mush like:
"Remember that time... /insert laughs about PK events from past games/"
As for the bit about BITN I think I have a friend that would say the jumping through hoops part seemed built into the system. Or perhaps we hit the staff on the wrong day or spoke in the "wrong tone".

RE: How does a Mu* become successful?
@Kestrel said in How does a Mu* become successful?:
Just curious, if you think you're at the point in your life where you'll never be able to MU* ever again, why make this thread? My question is 100% serious. What were you hoping to learn? And what's your conclusion about MU* success potential, etc.?
A friend and I had batted around the idea of making a game. The more thought I put into it the less it sounds like something I'd want to do. I'm the kind of person that doesn't like doing things half ass, its why I'm successful in my professional life. If I were to work on a game I'd want it to be enjoyed, successful and to be able to look at the end result and be happy with what was made. To know it was done the best it could be.
I don't have the drive like I use to but I've been on the fence wondering if I shouldn't just jump into Evennia and code up a new "mu*". I have a BS in CS and know a few languages. From what I've seen of Evennia and what I know of Python it all doesn't seem too difficult. But my issue is at the end of the day I don't think I'd be happy with anything. The hobby as a whole has felt very hollow for a long time.
I don't seem to like most of the people, I don't seem to be in the same "category" in terms of life experience or where I'm at in my life and I don't really need the OOC side of Mu*'s. That just leaves the IC side which is slow, boring and more often than not feels like a huge waste of time (to me). So I think I'm done

RE: RenoMUSH - The Biggest Little Game on the Net
@luna @icanbeyourmuse @Huzuruth ... WOLF PACK!
You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!

@thebird I'd suggest starting with Baker Street. It's an RP Meme community and a good way to get started. There are story based communities as well. Be advised a lot of the memes on Baker Street have a sexual or romantic element to them, but plenty of them don't. Also, Dreamwidth RP tends to focus on "feature characters" from media and pop culture, rather than original creations, though those are out there too. Good luck!

So, check this out. I'm a Cirno about to tell a cool story, bruhs and bruh-ettes.
Maybe you've wondered about this.
When people include information about their place of employment in their Facebook Profile, Facebook then appends a neat little note to their username, detailing their job.
Now, I see some people who express themselves in garbled, awful English, with terrible grammatical syntax, (I am not an English Professor, but still, after reading a good deal of books, I have a very good idea of what a sentence should look like, and their sentences do not look like that at all, nor do they resemble any of the practice sentences in the manuals of writing the English language I've read) missing punctuation, no capitals (or too many capitals), and so on.
Maybe you've seen this in Facebook postings, too.
Inevitably, I find that these same people have job titles such as "Manager at Really Big Corporation" or "Chief Executive Officer of Prestigious Business, Inc", or "Software Engineer at Microsoft".
I'm not making this up. I'll start taking screenshots and documenting this phenomenon, if anyone harbors any doubts.
How...how the fuck does that work? I mean, I'm a nobody who does a very basic job, and expressing myself in English that is easy on the eyes comes naturally to me.
It's not like I need to pore over a stack of dictionaries, a Thesaurus, and four manuals of style for an hour before producing my posts, either. Anyone who has MU*d with me or had a live chat with me will attest to this fact.
Are these people really that stupid?
Do they not care? How can they not care?
Have we been wrong all this time, and you can just type like a retard on the Internet, while being a genius business manager or a software engineer? Because (and I've been on the Internet for nearly two decades, now) expressing yourself in legible, properly parsed English has always been a mark of intelligence, to the best of my knowledge.
Can you just get these jobs while being a retard? Have I grossly overestimated the amount of intelligence you require to be an exec or a software engineer?
I...I'm confused. Help.
It's the internet, it isn't real communication, #BlameItOnTwitter
