@Glitch I love the Black Company books by Glen Cook (though its not urban fantasy). The book Three Shades of Night (nWoD Fiction) is pretty good too. I'm a huge Dresden Files fan so I'd recommend those as well.

RE: Alternate CoD/WoD Character Growth / XP Systems
I think the issue here is when talking of caps the examples used are games that are built with a cap in mind. When we talk CofD and nWoD and WoD and others that don't have a cap built in it doesn't seem warranted. In my opinion as seen through out.
My point through all though is if there is plot/story/challenge then most of this other shit doesn't really matter to most players.
Captain Blowhard ( @Thenomain ) brings up a valid point above about using more skills, this is for real something that should happen. Nothing makes a low level player that is generalized look more badass than when he can get that "single" success that's needed on a variety of rolls that test his skills/abilities vs the POS PC built to drop a ton of raw dice on firearms that can't climb a rope, or escape in a foot chase.
With that nothing is more fun than being challenged in RP. That moment when you know you have to roll 5 dice to avoid certain doom like: Escape out of a window before being spotted by the monster creeping through the house. With CofD what's even better is getting a fail and making it dramatic for the story. So when I bomb that roll my PC then will have to take the hit and fall to the floor making a ton of noise... Now my PC needs to get up (one round) and figure out how to deal with the monster that knows where he is by the sound made (+1 beat sucka, thank God I'm not capped and can use it to beef up X skill later with the other beats).

How does a Mu* become successful?
A thread that cropped up in Random Bitching got me thinking about game design, game culture, and over all what makes Mu*'s successful. With the talk of all the games that are potentially coming down the pipe, what can they do to be successful? What is success in Mu*'s? Below is a comment that made me really start thinking on this topic and I'm curious what the rest of the community thinks/believes.

@ThatOneDude BITN is a very good sandbox game. As such it's the kind of MU* that can feel extremely active if you're in the right group and not so much if you're on the outside looking in.
Oooooooh, I see... So you have to be in the "in crowd"?
I don't think that's it if you mean a cliquish atmosphere - no one will exclude you, at least more than in most games. From my own (disclaimer: limited) experience but also chats with others it's more that BITN is very event-oriented.
That means when there are things happening, assuming you can into those things, it can be a blast. Monster killing, creepy encounters, it excels in those because of the golden combination: talented STs, liberal staff and absence of thematic restrictions (your wolfman doesn't need to play under the same rules as the other guy's).
The issue is what happens when there's nothing happening. There are no politics, things to get, territory to defend from other PCs, goals to attend to, special powers to work towards... so if you try to get on the grid then you're kinda limited in what there is to do.
It sounds like your experience falls into the latter case.
It sounds like the monster of the week "wait until event, don't really do much else in the downtime" isn't a bad thing.
For me I think I enjoy where plots are immersive enough that before/after/between there is MEAT to RP about. Which then leads to more events that allow for a rinse and repeat, full circle, or whatever of RP.

RE: An open letter to Fallcoast
I'm not sure I understand this thread. Why not just open a new game with all the spheres and use a 2e ruleset?

I was able to connect to Arx fine just now with DuckClient 5.1 on Chrome/Mac. There really aren't many protocol options to speak of like the kind Sunny was talking about, so I doubt it's that. The only option is for SSL - perhaps try it with SSL set to never. Or delete and re-create your world.
This is usually a problem for me, the ssl setting. Most of the time setting it to Never will fix issues.

RE: Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?
@thenomain said in Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?:
Fair.
I'm currently creating a character on a game far, far higher power than I'm comfortable with because this is what people around me are playing. I am angsting (loudly; sorry everyone around me) that I will not be able to justify this to the gatekeepers and therefore be asked to not play with those people around me.
So FH and SF may be the only two tier systems I've encountered that make a systematic difference. In my world, that's a justification to use them.
Just remember, if they ask you if you're the Keymaster, just say yes.

@thatonedude Yeah. I'm not saying it can't be fixed. I'm just saying that that is the current fix and those are the results.
Of course turning it down to the level of Primal Urge does then lead to the early issue with some players complaining that they want their own sphere limitations loosened, but that's a whole separate ball of wax.
The thing that is weird to me is most games have a hard time with the stuff that in the big picture don't really mean anything. "We're gonna remove multiattack cause we don't like you kicking NPCs in the face 5 times! AND! We're scared you'll use it in PK which is TERRIBLE!" Ok... but making it easier for an ENTIRE sphere to RP is mission impossible?
The above multiattack thing is so stupid that I can't even as well. I mean if its a PK thing then house rule that you can't use multiattacks in PK... >.>;

I could see how that would be somewhat unsettling, but I also have to wonder why were you looking in the general area of another dude's dick if you didn't want to see dick? That one seems like blame could be shared.
What...? There I was, minding my own business and giving my business that last shake before zipping up and turning out of the "stall" when old "holds his dick while he runs" comes barreling at me full speed. I was the VICTIM HERE MAN!

RE: Edited timestamps?

I love to watch someone edit things live. Seeing them edit things twelve times after the fact is great. But sometimes you're not there to see the party, it would be nice to know a post was edited after the fact. Sometimes people edit things so other peoples comments appear out of context, or to hide something they were called out on. Sometimes they think of something clever in rebuttal minutes or hours after their initial lame comment. Other times it's mundane...
So I'm suggesting timestamps or a history like wiki's!
Because as we all know the internet is real serious business.

RE: Scenes You Have Always Wanted to Have...
I miss playing in RP that just has action and excitement. I also miss that part of being a player without a look behind the curtain on every game I play on. To clarify I get the sandbox games and the make your own fun situations but I miss the times when I was a player and I didn't know shit about what was going to happen in the story. Go to events, get involved with the meta of a game, RP with other players about those events and that on going story.
With that I miss even picking up some of the slack and running scenes to push plot but I think the big thing I miss in most games I play is that "plot" element. Now, if you feel like replying with something like "Make your own fun!" I want you to A: Look at games like Reno and Eldritch and then think if it really is a sustainable idea for a game to use. I get it in the short term but there comes a point where shit will just fizzle out.

RE: Visit Fallcoast, sponsored by the Fallcoast Chamber of Commerce
Or create a system where staff interaction is less of a thing. I mean I know jaded staffers think they're funny but players just wanna play and not hear your jaded and shitty attitude. Approve my xp spend and if you don't like it then move to an automated system.

Nothing stinks more than staff not following their own policy for PRPs. I mean when something reads clearly as: All you need do is step 1 , step 2 and step 3 for rewards like X, Y, and Z. PRPer does said steps then is told "I/We as staff don't FEEL <insert some stupid shit here> gives you the reward(s) as posted, though you followed what we posted as rules to the letter." Do we still use hashtags? #Winning? >.>
Pretty much exactly what happened, yeah. Finally something we can fully agree on!

Coo. That actually kind of sounds like what I'm looking for, because at this point I still have no idea what one actually does on WoD games. You'd think I would, hanging out here, but the impression I've gotten is that it's mostly, "I'm a vampire, and also I work at the bait shop."
Vampire who runs a vape shop is my next concept.
Yeah, most vampire RP sucks...
