I was able to connect to Arx fine just now with DuckClient 5.1 on Chrome/Mac. There really aren't many protocol options to speak of like the kind Sunny was talking about, so I doubt it's that. The only option is for SSL - perhaps try it with SSL set to never. Or delete and re-create your world.

This is usually a problem for me, the ssl setting. Most of the time setting it to Never will fix issues.

Also there is nothing less satisfying as a player than coming into a game fresh off the street and unable to find a foot hold to get established. If I were to join a game where groups were given priority 24/7 over single players it would mean to play I would have to join a group. Now for the sake of putting this in perspective, let's pretend the only group willing to take on the new player is headed by the MuSoapBox famous VaSpider. I have to join that group or never really get into things or just not play. There is the option to bring my friends but I'm guessing my experience in not getting a foot hold would make me not want to do so.

Wait this is funny , so this idea of cluttering the ad being a bad thing. One line about 2e equipment rules is clutter but all the other stuff is just topics of debate? What's going on here?

@thatonedude can I make a request that people quit comparing 1e to 2e? We get it lots of people prefer 2e, thats fine. This is a 1e game, allow it to exist as a 1e game and just talk about the merits of the MU not the ruleset it is using. My arfuments are not bashing on the ruleset they are about the books that are not being used. Please just stop bashing 1e, some of us prefer it over 2e, and I am tired of reqding about people cluttering an ad about it.

I feel like you just explained how 2e/CofD does equipment... I'm not saying its a vastly superior rule set, but...

I don't think the above is bashing...

I have mixed feelings when it comes to equipment.

On the one hand, the core book is pretty sparse. I think you could make a reasonable argument that it's too sparse for some concepts that people actually want to play.

On the other hand, there's also such a thing as Too Much. Mostly, what the extensive equipment lists in Armory seem to do is make more work for staff and provide advantages for people who want to dumpster-dive through page after page of handgun minutiae (or whatever). A handful of items in any given category are quickly quantified as the best, and everything else in that category might as well be wasted space.

As long as staff is reasonably flexible I don't think a short equipment list is necessarily a problem. So there's no Lucerne Hammer on the equipment list; so what? Figure out what's closest to it that is on the list, run it by staff to make sure they think it's reasonable, and just call it a Lucerne Hammer when you get into a fight. I think most people will be fine with that as long as you don't try to start arguing that your Lucerne Hammer gives you 8-again even though the Great Ax stats say no such thing.

I feel like you just explained how 2e/CofD does equipment... I'm not saying its a vastly superior rule set, but...

    • RE: Let's talk about TS.

@kanye-qwest said in Let's talk about TS.:

Who has time?! I mean rationally I know lots of people have time. I have done TS maybe 2-3 times in the last....6 years. Arbitrary number of years. Granted, I'm not RPing full time.

      The rules are:
*it has to be part of a story or character development
*no weird ooc comments on it please, thanks
      *no 2nd person posing
*no 'we just met and we are super in love now we are going to have four babies and do happy homestead rp"

You never want an even number of kids. You need the tie breaker kid so I'd keep it to 3.

But on the topic of TS/RP relations and the like I know I need to understand the boundaries or know what we're doing or I get uncomfortable.

I use a model for a PC I had in the past as the way this type of stuff is successful for me. My PC meets PC of opposite sex. We RP, we joke and laugh and have a great time and then start to TS. This leads to more TS and IC things are great. OOC the other player explains how she would like the IC relationship to work and asks for my input which I give. We discuss some of the gray areas and agree OOC we'll talk about anything that should be talked about instead of it getting awkward. IC our characters have a quick talk and bam... No issues OOC or IC have ever come up.

I find when I try to have those OOC conversations sometimes with other players it goes south. Like goes bad and bad fast. Lots of times it seems whatever I'm saying is colored by whatever the other player wants to hear or doesn't want to hear and then everything gets awkward and in my minds-eye the whole thing looks like a giant dumpster fire.

Long story short like @Ganymede said above, communicate well. If that communication isn't working its probably in everyone's best interest to just let it go and not get tangled up in TS.

    • RE: Using an SSD as cache (Windows 10)

You could go spanned or striped drive (one logical drive made of two or more physical drives). Striped is faster but the drives need to be the same size. This is just a suggestion to use the spare SSD. The alternative could be to turn it into an external drive for backups and the like (get the kit to make it pretty).

For me I don't think there is much to gain trying to us the ssd for caching but that's just: the level of complexity vs the payout , divided by my lazy, equals fuck that.

Well, that was one thought. The problem with that is that then what do Aiel, swordbreaker users, etc skilled warriors buy? I could make some shit up but it won't be thematic since... they'd be made up.

      I'm looking for an alternative.

Does it work by IP? I saw a lot of issues with clients and IPv6 addresses. It could also just be a dns thing if it works by IP but not name.

@thatonedude Oh, word. I hear ya. Player support is what I'm talking about. Being on staff, in both cases, was truly incidental. At least in my opinion given that in case #1, I was a fellow staffer and was shut down brutally. (It felt brutal at the time.) It could have very well happened again, even though I was on staff. To me, staffer or no, a bad idea is a bad idea, same as a good one.

@Auspice I've looked twice at apps too. Trice, even. But if TR taught me anything at all, it was to say Yes, but...or Yes, and...

I want to be that person that helps instead of hinders...even if it's cliche trash or rainbow haired dreck. I'm here to let the player bloom, even if I think your concept is just another TS ho. I'm gonna help you be the best damn TS ho you can be.

@goldfish said in MU Things I Love:

I wanna take a moment to show some love to supportive staff. Story time!
(TL;DR: Staff let me play what I wanted not only with full support but with assistance and even a touch of enthusiasm.)

Once upon a time, in the days before The Reach opened, Goldfish was a budding staffer. Goldie mentioned on the staff channel that they had a concept for a Hunter. A wheelchair using disabled vet in Task Force: Valkyrie. Oh, how excited Goldie was for their concept! It would be a challenge, sure, but they really loved their idea. It was barebones at the time but it was to be their first PC in the game and their fourth or fifth ever. Also, the first Hunter ever for Goldie was still new to World of Darkness and roleplaying in general. Poor, sweet, naive little Goldfish.

Enter Big Mean Hunter Staffer (Whose name is lost to the annals of time. Just as well. He was eventually fired.)
"No!" said BMHS. "Task Force Valkyrie would never recruit a guy in a wheelchair! Even if he is a skilled veteran of the military!" He all but said it was terrible and stupid. I'm pretty sure there was a "LOL" in there. Goldie tucked their fins and swam away, saddened not only by the nasty ableism but also the shooting down of their precious concept. One of their first concepts ever for, as stated before, Goldie was still new to the community. The concept went on the shelf, occasionally being picked up for use of various elements but never used in total. (TR folks might recall Travis and William. They both had elements)

Fast forward to 2018. Reno has moved to a new server and is under new management. Again, Goldfish is a staffer. They are older now. Wiser. They understand the systems and the fluff better than before. And again, Goldie is chatting with their fellow staff. Goldie looks to their concept shelf and sees their old disabled vet in TFV. Goldie remembers the previous reaction but forges ahead, dusting it off and putting it out for suggestion.

And they liked it! Staff helped Goldie to refine the concept, make it fit into theme, and offered ideas to further it. They nurtured Goldie and out of it came Nick: Disabled former marine turned Alex Jones for the paranormal. (ADAMSKI operative. He spreads lies on Youtube.) He's involved in plot and Goldie is totally engaged with him as a character.

Today, Goldie is the happiest fish in the bowl because of good, open minded, supportive and creative staff. It is a lot easier to just say No. It's harder to say Yes, and...

So this too long post is dedicated to all of you Staffers and Storytellers out there who support, boost, and nurture your players and their creativity. Folks like you all are the backbone of this community and I am endlessly appreciative of it.

This is cool but the only concerning thing to me is Staffer to Staffer support. Its a great thing... Don't forget to support the players though. From what I've seen so far I've not been impressed with much of the support from staff on that game. This post will hopefully prove me way wrong from the cries of the masses telling me I've got it wrong.
