    • RE: RenoMUSH - The Biggest Little Game on the Net

I gave the game a second chance because @Tempest does have a point and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I was pleasantly surprised.

Once approved, I was able to find a scene right away (hell, it was larger than I would have liked). I've seen others asking for RP on the public channel. Folks seems friendly and willing to answer questions. Most importantly, the RP quality is, from my brief experience, excellent.

I figured since I complained here, I should follow up. The wait to be approved was discouraging, but once that was handled, the experience has been a pretty good one. I think it's worth a try.

      User experience may, obviously, vary.

See, you all are the best reason to learn code. Because it's like watching the Muppets as a child and then re-watching it as an adult. Functions never looked so dirty.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. @Thenomain and @GentlemanJack , I'll be hitting you up. And while we're at it, anyone have a good +roll/dice code they want to sacrifice up to the newbie to dissect?

    • Request: Halp!

I have come to beg and plead for some help with code. I'm a beginner but I am trying to learn. What I really, really need is someone to come on and look at my code and help me figure out what I'm doing wrong (some of it works, some does not), answer some questions I have, and maybe help me with some of the more complicated code (looking at you, CG). I'm not asking for someone to come in and just do all of the work, but if someone has time to look through what I have and give me some tips/answer some questions, I would be eternally grateful.

Plus it's going to be a pretty cool place. 🙂

I recently tried to make a character here. First, upon logging in, I didn't get so much as a hello from anybody. I figured ok, people are busy and don't have time to greet new people, and went into CG. I finished CG and the +job has sat completely untouched for 5 days (and counting). Not a 'we're working on this' or anything.

So... looks like I will not be playing here.

      • If it's a info drop get what you have to say out as quick as possible. Those interested will seek you out, even after you leave. Make the first couple poses count.

Oh my God thiiiiiiiiiis. I was in a scene once where the GM had indicated that it was going to be a major NPC talking to their faction. But then the GM decided that would happen -- at the end? We were supposed to socialize before? Idk it made NO SENSE and the GM was so confused about why people weren't getting into it. It was such backwards logic.

      • Do something unexpected. Don't take over the scene but don't be afraid to shake it up a bit. Those are the scenes that will be remembered, and will find RP later (but be prepared to stick around a bit to deal with repercussions or questions).

This is also a good one. It can be hard sometimes to note the balance between unexpected fun and scene hogging, but 1) you can usually tell when YOU feel bored in a big scene, and 2) it's a bit harder to hog a big scene, just given the volume of stuff. It's usually reasonable to allow yourself one unexpected thing in a big scene and then see if people roll with it. Sometimes it'll just stick to that one thing, sometimes it'll take the scene in a fun new direction. Just important to note how people respond.

This is true. You don't want to hog the scene. Throw something out in a pose. If someone grabs onto it, awesome. If not, move on. I've had some long lasting plots (such as enemies made or new skill focuses) and IC atmosphere (such as someone acquiring a goat and it becoming a part of quite a few scenes) because of random stuff I've thrown in. You can't force it, though. Throw it in with the rest, and don't expect a response /right then/.

I think everyone hates big scenes. But if you throw out something memorable, people will seek you out later.

    • RE: Larger Scenes!

I hate large scenes. That said, I've been forced to attend, even run, quite a few of them due to various IC reasons. There are a few things I've learned that may or may not be helpful.

      • Create a concept that isn't dependent on large scenes. If you, like myself, dislike them, avoid mush-wide positions of power and the like, as you will be required to attempt so many functions.

      • If it's a info drop get what you have to say out as quick as possible. Those interested will seek you out, even after you leave. Make the first couple poses count.

      • Do something unexpected. Don't take over the scene but don't be afraid to shake it up a bit. Those are the scenes that will be remembered, and will find RP later (but be prepared to stick around a bit to deal with repercussions or questions).

      • Don't be afraid to talk to those running the scene. If you talk to them ahead of time, you can likely get in what you need before it turns into a social/bar-fest. In PrPs, you can determine if you want to be there or not and there are often opportunities for behind-the-scenes activity if you can't make/can't handle the scene.

      • Ask about pose order. Is it three pose rule? After the set, who's posing? I've seen scenes delay and hour because no one knows who's posing next that first round. Don't be afraid to ask or suggest something.

I don't know how many of these are actually helpful, but suck at big scenes, myself, and therefore feel the pain. These things have helped, however loosely related.

I expect a web page that players can update with logs and character pages and where important theme files can live. A wiki seems to be the easiest way to do this (I use Wikidot, which is free and does not require me to host it myself or find another party to do so). I've seen pretty good set-ups on WordPress (Second Pass and No Return do this in a way I consider user-friendly). There are assuredly other ways. It would never be anything I would expect a hosting service to provide, because it's a separate service, though the ones that do it are really nice.

I was looking for a simple wiki to use. Wikidot looks about perfect for what I need. Thanks for the tip.

I've lived as the minority in one country and the majority in another. I've come to the conclusion that people are people no matter where you go. Someone's always going to hate you for something you can't control, but there's always going to be good folks out there who don't care and judge you who for who you are.

@Misadventure Pretty much. I was originally debating using a system like Exodus (http://www.loki.us.com/images/Exodus_Survivor_s_Guide_v1.5.pdf) but enough people said they liked the nwod system that I decided to stick with it. Also, as someone who is not fantastic at coding, it simplifies things for me (particularly when it comes to CG).

    • Ground Zero - Help Needed!

      (Intro music.)

      The Cold War never ended.

The world moved on, the focus shifting from Russia and China to the Middle East, but the Cold War never really ended. Old enemies never ceased to be enemies just because there was a new, shared one. The only question now is /which/ enemy dropped the bomb.

Seattle was the first city hit in the attacks of 1995. The Puget sound, its resources and it's military bases, made it a prime target. Other cities lost were San Francisco, Los Angeles, Pheonix, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, New York, D.C., Atlanta, Houston, Tulsa, and Miami. The lucky 13.

The attacks killed millions. The fallout afterwards killed hundreds of millions. All communication ceased. Those that found safety held onto it by any means necessary. The world was in chaos.

Twenty years have passed since the initial bomb. Radiation still runs rampant, creating monsters of those who can't escape it. Survivors have banded together, but not all of them have the same ideals. The Patriots support the old government and have built their own military. The New World is formed of scientists and academics who want to rebuild fresh. The Neo Nation seek to dominate and enslave those they can. A few Independents exist on the fringes, unsure of which train wreck to join.

Outposts have been established, even at Ground Zero. The Patriots, the New World, and the Neo Nation have all set up territories within Seattle, and each want to claim the city for their own reasons. It's up to the survivors as to which one succeeds.

Ground Zero will be a mortal-only nWoD Mu*. We are pretty bare bones at the moment and we need your help. Especially code help, as I have been fumbling along as a beginner (at least to help me clean up my messes and point me in the right direction - I'm a quick learner). That said, we're also looking for descers, for people willing to help with help files, for those willing to contribute to ideas about theme and plots, future STers, wiki experts, and, well... pretty much everything.

If it sounds interesting, let me know.

      P.S. There will be mutants.

@Three-Eyed-Crow You have it on the west side, too, once you get away from Seattle. Hood Canal, I'm looking at you. Plus you have all the logging communities. And down south, the farming. So basically, everywhere except the Seattle-area. 🙂

    • RE: Sexual themes in roleplay

I couldn't care less what people do behind closed doors. If they're having fun and no one's getting hurt, more power to them. The problem I have with rape RP is when it's brought public. When other people are forced to drop what they're doing and be a part of it, simply because it's not in their character's nature to turn away. Also, if a person is in an IC relationship, make sure that person is ok with what's going to happen to your character. If they're not, end the IC relationship before putting them through that and breaking their character forever. I feel the same way about suicides/suicide attempts. Everyone should be able to RP what they want to RP, but don't force it on those who would opt out.

That said, if people need other sexual themes to comment on, there are plenty. What about monogamy/polygamy on MU* vs RL? What about sexual-theme coercion/extortion, which is use a huge NO RL but is a prevalent theme on MU*s? What about the prevalent stereotypes often found on mushes (the 5' tiny submissive ghoul, the large and feral dominant werewolf, etc)? And, someone please clue me in, what about vampire and sex? Do they or they not have/enjoy it? I'm not a vampire player and I've often wondered.

American Mutt. Dad's side has been over here since the colonies and comes from English/Irish/German stock. Mom's side is Polish, or maybe Russian (my grandfather's birth certificate is questionable at best). That said, my family never really embraced any particular heritage, other than American.

    • RE: RL peeves! >< @$!#

I don't think @thebird was comparing 'lol' and 'heh' so much as simply stating that there's a text-related habit that also irks her. And I'll have to agree that 'heh' does tend to sound a bit sarcastic and snarky, to me, but I think it's different depending on what MU* culture (different MU*s do have different cultures, after all) that you came from. And lol, to me, tends so sound a bit... lacking in effort.

Personally, I try to avoid both of them. Acronyms in general, although I'm guilty of using them every now and then when I get excited or am in a hurry (generally 'brb' when I have to go in a hurry or 'omg' when I'm talking about the Walking Dead).

So, having talked to a couple people here and having ended up with some RP from it, I remembered this thread and thought I'd post to it. Right now, I only play on TR (despite all of it's flaws, I have some friends there), at least until the project I'm involved in is up and running.

You can find me there as Grady (Changeling) or Vern (Shifter). Feel free to drop me a @mail, a page, a carrier pigeon, whatever you fancy. I'm around mostly PST evenings.
