At the risk of sounding like an old fogey gen-xer: there once was a time when you'd page someone(or they'd page you)and say "Hey! Wanna do a scene?"

They or you would agree or not, the person already there would set the scene and you'd go from there or find someone else to do a scene with.

Things were so much easier then.

I've been meaning to do this for a while. Not really playing anywhere at the moment, but Arx is looking like my go-to Mu* when I get back into it. Mainly an RPI player, but always played Mushes too.

      Old or defunct:
      Shadowrun: Siena, Maria
      Shadowrun: Detroit- Jocasta, Natty, Sukanya
      Shadowrun: Denver- Sabra

      RPI:
      Evolution of Esos: Tamsyn, Valeska
Armageddon: Juvanna, Pai Ming, Zuania (back to Mudding: Mayreni)

      Mu*:
      Arx: Drea Redrain

Ok, so I'm really enjoying Stranger Things. At the halfway point, loving the 80's movie homages, going to be a little sad when I'm done.

    • RE: Game Death

From what I've seen two things can kill a game: stagnation and changing too quick. Before I get into that I will say I'm a big fan of games where the story ends. I'd like a game where the game has a metaplot that has some sort of endgame from the beginning, whether it's "seasons" or a different phase, I'm a big fan of games like that.

Changing too fast: There was a DnD game called Treyvan. It was fairly successful, had a good number of players, active plots, etc. Then one day staff announced they were changing the theme, nobody could keep their characters. Basically, it was a different game. Treyvan died.

It changed too fast and players weren't ready for it.

Stagnation: Wanna know what will make me log out and never return? A stagnant game. If I log in, a game has a good number of players, healthy ooc chatter, but an empty grid or I find myself paging people to rp and everybody is like "nah I'm good" goes back to idling. I'm out!

Games can get stuck in a rut if they've been running for a while. The Mu I'm playing right now has been around for 20 years. I've seen people say it's dying or its stagnant. In a lot of ways it is, but they're changing it just enough where they're maintaining a playerbase. Story wise it's pretty much the same game though. The difference is there is a large number of stories you can tell in the setting.

I think someone said listening to players is useful in knowing what should be added or subtracted from a game. But I'd take it a step further and look for feedback from newer players since that's what you want, newer players coming in and adding their stories. What's keeping them? What's scaring them off? What can be done to keep that balance of keeping players and adding new ones?

    • RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift

Let me just say as a player of both rpi MUDs and mushes, both communities are equally dismissive of each other. There really might not be a common ground between the two. From what I've seen in this thread, certain points were brought up and weren't really addressed and hostility, passive or naked emerged.

It makes me wonder, why continue to post or update a thread where you're greeted with such opposition? I don't think being all "come at me bro" is going to be that conducive either. This is a derivative of the Snark/Wora board, but I think the questions and points brought up in the beginning were very genuine and were ignored...which brought on the reaction you have now.

So I'm also wondering, if you don't want to discuss what you're advertising and seeing how well it's going, why do it?

    • RE: Pay to Play MUSHing?

      @Ide said:

@Apos, you're telling me people wouldn't pay to get an extra dot on their sheet faster than the other guy?

I'm not answering for Apos. I think people would pay for an extra dot, the problem is most people won't. It will create a disparity that the game itself just can't overcome. The people that won't pay will simply play somewhere else. That will leave the small group that did pay, who will inevitably demand more since they are paying. I don't think the mu*ing community is big enough to support the kind business model a pay to play game needs.

    • Armageddon MUD

      From the main page:

Armageddon MUD is an online fantasy game in which players jointly inhabit a harsh, post-apocalyptic desert world. The game requires roleplay; while conflict abounds, the game is not about killing things. Rather, it is about living out a character's sometimes short and always difficult life in the harsh world, Zalanthas. It is a world where sorcerer-kings and their ruthless servants, the Templarate, govern the two main cities, Allanak and Tuluk. Any magick not granted by the Kings is feared and hated, and where the punishment of such a curse might be death. In this harsh realm, life is a constant struggle, and death may occur over a drink of precious water.

It's a MUD, a 20+ year old mud at that, but I feel like it deserves some space here at Musoapbox. This MUD is a little different, when you log in you are your character. There's no ooc channels and very little OOC chatter. While logged in you are living the life of your character. For the most part, players simply play their character. It's ok to ask questions OOC since it has code where some things might not be readily apparent. There are also player helpers available on their discord channel to help you, but sharing In character information is frowned upon.

The game is Darksun based and full of lore (20+ years worth). Dwarves are hairless and have a focus, an objective they are obsessed with. Half-elves are social outcasts, an unholy union between Humans and Elves that neither race accepts. Elves are broken up into two categories: City Elves and Desert Elves. Elves in Armageddon aren't lithe protectors of the forest; they're 7ft tall and never ride mounts. City Elves are untrustworthy, even to each other. Desert Elves are near feral tribals, who are protective of their lands and they run longer and faster than a rider. There are Half-giants, the magical creation of a sorcerer-king, ridiculously strong with the brain of a child. Armageddon also has the unique Darksun race: Mul. Muls are the offspring of humans and dwarves. They are usually born into slavery and prone to dangerous rage like outbursts where they will attack anything, friend or foe.

Magic? There is magic, but magic is feared and hated. There are three types of mages: Elementalists, Sorcerers and Templars. If you are a mage you want to keep it a secret to all but your most trusted friends. Even then, you never know if they'll betray you. Sorcerers are the most feared of all because they wield the magic that made Zalanthas the desert world it is, they gather mana from living things reducing them to ash or from themselves. Templars are the only characters openly magical, because their power comes from their God-King. Superstition, ignorance and fear rule Zalanthas.

So here's the deal guys. Armageddon is role-playing fun! You choose a class (here called a guild) and a sub-guild to balance out your character a little more, write up your description and a short blurb about your character's background and you're in. It's best to start out as a basic class: Warrior or Ranger you all know. There is no rogue class, there are three! Burglar, Pickpocket and Assassin. If combat isn't your thing you can choose a Merchant class, where you can craft goods ranging from weapons and armor to perfumes and clothing. If combat (and short life spans) is your thing it's advisable to join the T'zai Byn , the mercenary company. If you want to play something with more social flavor and intrigue, you want to join the Atrium or one of the three merchant houses.

I could go on and on about this game. It always sucks me in and I always come back to it. Check it out! There are some upcoming changes to the current guild system at the moment. But the documented guilds and races are still opened and playable.

    • RE: Where have all the crunchy games gone?

@Seraphim73 I think Shadowrun had a +stash command, where you could hide your guns. Looking back at it, it was a shitty way to treat a noob. Things like that were the norm. Mess up on a run? consequences! Carrying visible firearms downtown? Consequences!

Anyway back to the topic. I think shadowrun is regarded as crunchy is because at least in 3rd edition, Rigging, decking and magic were almost like separate rule sets. Some staff on Shadowrun and Detroit only dealt with certain rules and you could kind of tell by the plots they ran. By the time I started playing there were mostly street sams, phys adepts, and mages walking around. Every once in a while you'd bump into the odd rigger or decker.

I think at some point people kind of said "eff those rules."

    • RE: Sensitive cultural/political/religious aspects of game themes.

I tend to shy away from "Historical" mu*s for a couple reasons. I'd approach my decision to play there on the same criteria I would in making certain character rulings if I were a staffer.

      1. Which version of history are we talking about? I hate to be that person....but. Even in history you have people that broke norms. If the concept is interesting, it should be allowed. Just about any time period you can think of there was someone that was abnormal in the societal sense. Medieval? There were examples of women fighting and leading armies. Berlin 1943? There were certainly Germans that didn't agree with nazis. I could go on and on with this.

I'm not even the type of person to say, "this setting? Imma break it with this concept." I just think historical settings are sanitized and attempted to be portrayed in black and white, when even a little research proves otherwise. So, I'm all for if you have a historical basis for the character concept, it's allowed. Most Mu*s with historical themes don't do this, so I don't play them. This leads me to #2.

      1. History and accuracy aren't always interesting in terms of storytelling. Ever watch Vikings? Love it! Guess who my favorite character is? Yeah, you guessed it....Lagertha.

Now Vikings is a great show. It's not the most historically accurate show. I'm pretty sure women didn't really go on raids and Lagertha probably didn't exist....neither did Ragnar most likely. But I enjoy watching the show and if it were historically accurate. I doubt it would've lasted a season. I know I wouldn't watch it.

The same applies to an mu*, if I log on to a Viking game and I'm looking through the help files and I see something like "we are a historically accurate game, that means no Lagertha, you can play a shield maiden but..." I'm typing quit...not even going to finish reading.

So the point I'm making is, history is great. It just doesn't always tell a fun or interesting story. Sometimes it's a confining box that's not even all that accurate either. There is a point where realism becomes unfun. If it is one of those sticking points, at least try to be flexible with it.
