@peverel Huh. About a month ago, I just asked someone if they ever talk to you.

I don't have it. I also know nothing about it but if no one else wants it...

So while we're on the subject of rules... do you think it's better for staff to create a detailed set of policies, or keep it to generic "don't be an asshole" guidelines?
We started out with 'don't be an asshole' as a tl;dr version of some basic policies that should be common sense. We added as needed (see above).

Also complain to your credit card company if you paid with one.

Old news but I never bought another of his books after discovering just how big a bigot (among other things) Orson Scott Card is.

RE: Reporting Roadblocks: Denial, Fear, Shame, Guilt, Embarrassment, etc.
Tangential to what's being talked about, and more specifically prompted by a discussion on another thread which title I can't remember, we just changed our policy regarding complaints.
The 'try to resolve it yourself then come to staff if you can't' policy has been a carry over from just about all games I can recall playing on where I actually read the game policies. After bringing up changing it, we pretty unanimously decided to make it 'bring it to staff' followed by 'if you want to try handling it yourself first, great but it's not a requirement'.
So hopefully that'll remove one external roadblock. There's not a lot we can do about internal ones.

RE: Reporting Roadblocks: Denial, Fear, Shame, Guilt, Embarrassment, etc.
@surreality Honestly, I'm not sure a game can do anything about it. We had a fellow staffer not complain about someone who was making her uncomfortable and was reluctant to do so even after we learned others were uncomfortable with him as well.
I suspect it's less a Mu* thing and more a societal one. Women are taught not to complain or make a fuss. Even men are, in a different way. In their case they should be able to handle it on their own. That seems to be changing with each successive generation but we're obviously not there yet. Hopefully this swell of allegations from women and men will help change that.
So what can a game do? Just be open about being available and take action when it happens. And when someone is asked to leave, a post about why (without getting into specifics) so others know that complaints do produce results.

I'm trying to piece together all this Fahrenheit stuff... and it's needlessly difficult.
All y'all should just go metric. It's more precise, logical, and every other country in the world save three have done it without the sky falling on their heads.
Sorry but Fahrenheit is much more precise. As an example, let's take the range of 0 to 50 in Celsius. That's a 50 degree spread. Fahrenheit has about a 90 degree spread and so is much better able to measure the exact temperature of something without needing to resort to decimals. And if you want to use decimals, then it becomes even more accurate.

At one point a post was made announcing the private scene and encouraging those not involved so far to interact with those who had been invited to get involved. I have no idea how this is meant to work.
Especially since exactly who those people are was never said.

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
I have a slightly different impression. From things I've heard Drama say...
- Unless you've experienced something supernatural as part of a staff run plot, you have no idea there is anything like that going on.
- Staff run plots are directed toward those people who RP with as many people as possible.
Now, I understand the desire to have the focus of the game happen organically. But it's made it so I have a lot of trouble finding the desire to play. There's only so much bar RP I can take and this is worse. It's not even bar RP. It's arcade RP: teen drama minus anything that you're there to actually play about since you're not in the know.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
Thing is, we've had plenty of constructive threads since MSB opened. And most of them didn't devolve into chaos laced with a healthy dose of vitriol. That being said, I'm sure we've all noticed that in the last several months, things have become increasingly heated. I'm not sure why. Neither do I particularly care.
Speaking just for myself, I think things were fine just as they were... say, six months ago. Now though, we really need to get rid of the extreme personal insults and ad hominem attacks. Those who engage in them on a regular basis, to the exclusion of most other content, need to be reined in or booted as all they contribute is 'sound and fury signifying nothing'.
And GIFs. Ban the fucking GIFs.

@tnp Don't forget the WORA with comments which was mostly logs before EZboards.
That... was before my time, actually. I wasn't a member then (though I was on various games).

Whoops! Just needed to scroll down more.
Wasn't WORA before and after SWOFA?
If I recall right...
There was WORA on Ezboards. Then it moved and was still WORA. It moved a few times actually because Nymeria kept hounding the hosts till Pev moved it to Mali? Somewhere like that.
Eventually it shut down and became SWOFA. Then SWOFA shut down and we had WORA again. Then MSB.

Gotta love the internet. Thank you archive site:

edited to quote:
What's New:
August 8, 2002:The move to the new IGU site is now more or less complete except for updating the new archive. We switched from ezboards to the sibermaus site for various reasons, including a disagreement with the way ezboards handled a problem on one of our sister forums.
edited again to add:
The 'problem' mentioned was when Ezboards shut down Tasteless Descs because Nymeria complained about her desc being posted there and said it was a copyright violation. It's the same reason WORA left Ezboards.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
So. Plans are being made and discussions are being had. While these are going on, I'll just say one thing: IGU.
Some of you will be thinking 'Huh?' which is exactly my point. There's a reason why WORA has lasted so long in whatever form and Idealistic Gamers Unite went the way of the dodo a long time ago despite being contemporaries of each other.
While I don't want to see the bad old days return in force, neither do I want to see this board become... bland. The day it does is the day it dies. Better to err on the side of vitriol.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
Solution: mods create 2nd accounts to use ONLY for moderation and they continue to post as normal folks under their regular names.
edited to add: which is what Ghost just said.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
Suggestion: if you want to keep the worst of things out of the Ads section, just delete a post that crosses the line. Trolls and attention whores love to be in the spotlight and get people arguing with them. Just deleting the post is just making them disappear in that instance. No drama, just gone.
Note: do this everywhere and half the posters will up and leave so it should be ONLY for Ads if you really want to keep that pristine.
