RE: Good TV
I believe both the Expanse and Dark Matter suffered from the same problem. SyFy didn't actually make them, they just bought the broadcast rights or some such (I know Dark Matter was this way and think I read the same about the Expanse). They got zero revenue from streaming so it was harder to justify the expense. If that's true they should probably figure out how to actually not make garbage in house so they can feed out of the streaming trough like everyone else.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
double post in my own thread!
Other alternative is setting maybe a year or two after the books. Gives all the people and factions that folks love but also includes super strong channellers of both sexes and only a subset of them limited by the Oaths. This can be balanced out somewhat systematically (need to have strong enforcement of just how exhausting channelling can be).. but it's difficult.

RE: RL things I love
There are not a lot of karate tournaments done around here, but there will be one in a couple of weeks. It will be the first tournament that a lot of the youth students will be attending and they were all lined up in the dojo and the Sensei was going over what to expect. He started off by asking if anyone had been to a tournament before and everyone said no except for one kid that raised his hand and proclaimed, "No, but I've watched the Karate Kid!"
There will be no leg sweeping.

I mean, what happens after the Last Battle (besides clean-up)?
Lenn flies to the moon on a flaming eagle and other stories.
But really, what Arkandel said. That's the game.

Instead of fighting for prestige it will be fighting for money to avoid crippling student debt

Pretty much this is what I'd like to see. Scale back all the power levels (Moiraine and Liandrin are the the tippy-top, not Nynaeve), thereby allowing Warders to be pretty kick-ass, and go from there.
This is probably something that will happen no matter what I settle on. Unless taken by surprise channellers would still be able to wreck anyone that can't channel one-to-one, or even three-to-one. But not 500-to-one.

I always wanted a third age game from a mirror world with no dragon, no big names, there may be people in those same positions but they aren't FC's...
So you wouldn't even need to mention anything about the book chars at all. They just never existed in this turn of the wheel.I am considering this too, but it has its own hurdles. How do you make some of the key thematic events happen without a Dragon Reborn? The founding of the Asha'man? The Aiel joining the fight as allies (mostly)? The cleansing? It's certainly doable but would need a very good ST team in place to help coax it all along and has the problem of running a game on rails if people want to be able to have those sorts of characters introduced to the game.
I would not want to have any character be ta'veren or be the Dragon Reborn otherwise you're just doing a find and replace on the FCs from the books and what's the point, plus the usual problems having a small group of PCs of grossly imbalanced importance on a game.

Pretty sure I've read all the stuff (except for White Sands graphic novel)
The only thing you would spoil are things I've forgotten.

RE: Good TV
@auspice I'm 2/3 of the way through and so far agree that it's at least on par with the first season of Jessica Jones. My only complaints are that some of the symbolism is groan worthy in your face (looking at you crown painting shots) and the music isn't near as effective as the 1st season.
From what I have seen currently it is the only Marvel show that has had the second season be better than the first.

RE: Fear and Loathing (Official Thread)
I wish games like these had a sort of designated hitter for chargen. I loathe WoD as a system, but enjoy urban fantasy and its pretty much the only game in town but rarely make it through chargen with all the crunch involved in setting up a sheet

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
I didn't meant to imply that canon has to be followed.
I meant that.. with Asha'man for example, if people want to play them the black Tower needs to be founded and things setup a certain way otherwise you're not playing Asha'man, you're playing some other version of non-Aes Sedai male channelers. This isn't wrong, per se, but it's a variation from the original theme that may have been a draw and has other, further reaching cultural implications that the Asha'man represented.
It's nothing insurmountable, just takes some clever people and STing to blend into the setting

RE: Recipes!
I have a nice cast iron grill pan I've used maybe twice. It works awesome but, cleaning it is such a chore it just... sits buried among the other pans.
but to recipes!
Mac and Cheese. How do you make yours?
I throw mine together following the basic idea of:
1 lb of pasta, cook!
In large glass bowl:
12 oz can of evaporated milk
6 oz of butter
4-6 oz of velvetta
12-14 oz of other stuff. America, shredded cheddar, Colby. Those bags of mac and cheese shred mix.
Onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper
little bit of ground mustardMelt that mix in the bowl either double boiler style or in the microwave (zap for 60 seconds, stir, repeat) until its a smooth cheese sauce. Smooth is key, need everything good and melty.
Mix the cheese sauce into the pasta. Stir it up good. Clog your arteries.

RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)
The above is why I am very much leaning towards the setting of Whitecloak War into Aiel War. That's quite a bit of time, quite a bit of story, even though it loses out on Seanchan, Asha'man and a lot of Aiel stuff until we actually get into the Aiel War.
Time can be compressed a bit too.. who's to say that the Hailene can't land early?
Male channellers would be allowed, but I think put into a situation similar to what someone had said another MU had done. They need to understand that they are temporary. Madness will happen, they will be hated and hunted by most people and even their own family might poison their food once they realized what they are.

RE: RL things I love
That tomorrow is a dump day. 1st and 3rd friday of the month the city dump is open to residents to dispose of brush, lawn waste and construction debris, etc.
I'm officially old now that I'm looking forward to being able to get the crap off my lawn. I should have put this in the things I hate thread.

@arkandel said in Wheel of Time mechanics:
How does this sound, to work work within the 'interesting choices' mandate:A single unified paradigm for both channelers and non-channelers.

"Aes Sedai training", "Three-Fold Land conditioning", "Channeling Potency" which give all of your actions within their scope a modifier. This has a very high price so if you buy more than one you're not going to able to buy nearly anything else (and it's our job as designers to make sure it's not a no-brainer either way). These things might actually be scaled; perhaps someone got training up to the level of an Accepted and then fled the Tower, for instance.
-
A second degree of ability levels such as "Offensive/Defensive Sword Forms", "Fire/Earth/Water/Air/Spirit" which again, offer modifiers (more bang for the buck) than the previous tier. The fact non-channelers have fewer of these also makes purchasing them all more economical, which helps balance a bit more - you can make a somewhat well rounded, excellent melee combatant easier than a channeler (which is something the books point out - remember how many Asha'man didn't feel they should know how to use a sword).
-
A third degree of skills such as "Apple Blossoms in the Wind" and "Earthquake". The number of forms is troublesome here, and I can use input, as well as trying to make them be distinct from each other; why pick the first one instead of Parting the Silk?
Thoughts?
I would be wary of doing anything with individual sword forms. While it is thematic there are a few problems to overcome:
- there are a ton of them! Making them each mechanically different and balanced would be a chore.
- What would you do for the non-sword users to create an equivalent system or balance? If you figure out the point above and end up with 50 sword forms to choose from.. what is the staff fighter going to get? The knife?
Specialization absolutely makes sense though, both for channelers and non. Blademasters being the obvious example, but even aside from Talents on the channeling side there are plenty of examples of people just being good at stuff from doing it all the time. Windfinders and weather magic, that kin with the unbreakable Shield, etc.
