    • RE: Good TV

@auspice It wasn't just the genre. Season 1 had some funk/soul too. It was more how the music was just so infused in the episode. It was like another character on the show and not just background.

This season it seems like there is just a lot more of it and it's so watered down compared to the effect it had last time.

@auspice I'm 2/3 of the way through and so far agree that it's at least on par with the first season of Jessica Jones. My only complaints are that some of the symbolism is groan worthy in your face (looking at you crown painting shots) and the music isn't near as effective as the 1st season.

From what I have seen currently it is the only Marvel show that has had the second season be better than the first.

until this conversation I had forgotten there even was professional soccer in the US. Maybe they're hoping there are more fans down that way? It seems like a terrible idea though, on par with Olympics hosting

My bigguest issue with time delay on going up is that I just forget to put in my xp spends. with skill based systems that don't force you to do it like level based systems do I tend to get a big pile of XP, notice it, spend it, then accumulate another giant pile.

    • RE: Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?

I used to share a PB with my characters cousin, but were very different. One was long haired and messy, the other well-coiffed and put together. Just called in a family resemblance. (Mine was the handsome one)

But to play devil advocate here.. if PBs make such a different why bother having a desc at all and not just some simple appearance inputs to filter out the possibilities? Hair/eye/skintone/etc.

    • RE: Respecs.

I'm generally for respecs in a couple of situations.

When someone has a concept but doesn't understand the system so their build doesn't necessarily reflect the concept as well as it good. The above example of Fencing merit. Someone that is supposed to be an expert swordsman should probably have a merit to reflect it.

and when the system changes things in a way that makes it so their build doesn't reflect their concept. Same thing with the master swordsman, but say the Fencing merit was a newly added house custom.

I would like to change my answer to, "I would page every 90 seconds with a healthy smattering of 'I THOUGHT YOU LIKED ME, WHY DON'T YOU PAGE ME BACK!' and a final, 'FINE! FUCK YOU!' once I was about 11 minutes in."

This is the "that guy" that I referenced above.

    • Questions of Etiquette

Everyone has different expectations, but here's a place to ask questions of MU etiquette to get an idea of what folks think is reasonable. I think there may have been a similar topic once but with the sites wonder search feature I couldn't find it.

      First question!

You page someone and they don't respond. How long do you wait before paging again to see if they disconnected/missed your pose/chose to ignore you?

I always lean way to far on the side of caution for avoid being "that guy".. but that tends to have me wait too long. I typically wait an hour or more before trying again. What about you?

    • RE: What isn't CGen for?

I've gotten to the point where if I have to do more than 3-5 sentences for a background I'm just not going to ever complete it. Much like the Theno quote about I tend to learn a character by playing, but a couple of sentences or at least demographic settings are all I need to anchor a character in the world.

The amount of games that are so concerned with "What was your childhood like?" boggles my mind.

I think I created someplace once that required a Bone/Blood or something.. I just put whatever I needed to make it past chargen. I might as well have left them blank for all it affected how I played, but i'm not an avid WoD player who cares about that sort of stuff

    • RE: Arx: @clues

@ominous I was around during that time and largely had the exact opposite experience (half again as many clues as Alaric). I think it largely had to do with the circles you play in and how freely they share/hoard. Given how often people complain about having to do info dump scenes I am rather wary to ever ask anyone about anything unless they volunteer the info organically.

Context? I'm not sure why this example is a good thing?

      double post!?

The above is one reason I like the ooc-intent field of actions on arx. What the PCs might be doing may be way way way off base, but if the ooc intent is "we want to build a giant wooden badger to hide in" and the PCs are carving a wooden badger our of a big tree you can give a poke/nudge that maybe they should try to make it hollow

The whole reason they asked oocly if it was possible was to avoid looking bad by trying and failing.

I think that this is a bad assumption to make, though probably not wrong a lot of the time. If I was to ask if something was possible it wouldn't be to avoid trying and failing but to help shape the story. If the answer was an affirmative the followup question would be to be asked how/where to start, especially if the obvious places have been tried and gotten no where which led to the question of something being possible in the first place.

      @ganymede said in Earning stuff:

If you are going to make players earn something for their PCs, then the rules should be clear and straight-forward, and readily available. I concur with Faraday and Surreality here.
If there is discretion involved, the exercise should be consistent. Ideally, deviations in that consistency should be adequately documented to explain the deviation, and why it was fair.

Very much this. I can think of an example about a year ago where players wanted to do achievement X.

Group 1 was told no, it's impossible in this setting.
Group 2 was told no, it's impossible in this setting.
Group 3 announced their glorious achievement of X

Group 3 and staff were perplexed why players in Group 1 and 2 were unhappy.

Earning stuff is awesome, the sense of accomplishment you can get from it is great.. but make the rungs on that ladder you have to climb visible so people know how to start climbing and which way to go. And make the climb entertaining, maybe even fun.
