I am saddened by this, for all I am not a theatre hardcore fan. (I enjoy it, but not as much as others in my family - and you know how when you're forced to listen to things again and again.. you resent it? Yeah)

That said. Into the woods was one of the first shows I got to see my sister in with her adult voice. Doing the witch's "Stay with me" - It still chokes me up to think about it.

ETA: I just texted her lyrics, and she told me she can't, she's too sad. I bet there's a ton of people singing his songs tonight.

I really cannot verbalize how sad this makes me. As a musical buff? This is a hard one to take. Stephen Sondheim was so talented and so clever with everything he did. I actually got my start in musicals because my aunt was in uni at the time, and was part of their music department. Sondheim is a staple of ANY musical theater, and even though she ended up branching into opera (cause my aunt has PIPES), I will never ever forget seeing her play Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. I just watched Gypsy again a few days ago and was marveling over the range required for the songs in that show.

I can't think of a single person I know that hasn't heard SOMETHING he's done, even if they aren't aware it's his work.

And I'd wager just as many that can't bring themselves to do so.

Another link, just varied songs by people with insanely good voices. It was a fundraiser for Stephen Sondheim's 90th birthday. (Free on YouTube.)

I'd say most people probably aren't into the sneaker subculture, but this is unfortunate. The was brilliant when it came to sneaker design. Not everything of his I thought was a hit, but a lot of it was. Whatever I thought, he contributed a great deal to the sneaker community. From what I had been told he was a good man.

I remember when he ran for president. I remember a time when you did not root for a person to win simply because you agreed with his opponent's positions more. Not because that guy was the scum of humanity. I remember when, if Bob Dole had won, I'd have been disappointed, but wouldn't have dropped into a visceral despair because the country was going to be sent screaming into a searing political, social, and moral hell.

Bob Dole will be missed. No both sides of the aisle.

Michael Nesmith of the Monkees, 78, natural causes. Mickey Dolenz is the only remaining living member now. We watched repeats of the show all the time as kids.

@betternow This one aches. A lot. He was always my favorite Monkee. Plus. Elephant Parts.

@betternow This one hits hard. I saw the re-runs on Nickelodeon, and didn't KNOW it was a re-run. So my parents were thrilled to take me see the Monkees for my first show ever.

I'm so glad he went on that last tour, and really embraced the love the fans of the Monkees have always had for him.

...holy shit. That's... that's pretty rough. I grew up with the Vampire Chronicles, and I still remember the boxed set of the Sleeping Beauty trilogy as an 18th birthday present.

Just saw that and had no idea she was 80. So my sadness kind of became more of a nod to a great long life.

My dignity, RIP. I actually participated in yuletide work activities by wearing holiday socks on holiday socks day. You'll be missed.

I'm just a surge protector doing my job, sir.
