@Misadventure Cheaper rent, everyone I met when I first moved here shook my hand and said 'Welcome to Austin!', people leave each other alone with a super low crime rate, racism is... very mild, and per homophobia I've had two trans co-workers so far and haven't seen a lick of anyone being derogatory to them.

Also our live music scene is the best in the country. So we pretty much beat Seattle at everything except for rain and depression.

@Meg Your area seems chill, except for the terrifying skyline and being in the middle of no where.

I live my life on a budget. I budgeted money for my dog to have a bath and I usually get it from the rescue organization which has a kennel about a half hour's drive from me. It gets the job done and gives back to the rescue and it's actually a lot less expensive.

I was able to afford a bath this time around, instead of the bath and nail dremmeling. When I got there, one of the ladies made noises about how Rock's nails were getting a little long with this air that made me feel like she thought I was an incompetent dog owner. She basically shamed me into the extra $5 bucks I hadn't intended to spend and when ou're budgeting, that's like, a meal.

My uncle is in the VA due to incompetence of his doctors. WHile in the care of the VA he developed pressure wounds. He is dying slowly. Now the VA wants to discharge him with his new injuries on top of his full-body paralysis. This I knew. This I accepted.

He can talk, barely, and with great effort. He told my mom that on Monday one of the 'patient relations' people talked to him about how he shouldn't want to be a burden on others and how his family is driving so far to see him, and how he needs to either push to get himself discharged to live with family or, in her words 'Let go'.

...what. The. Fuck. People. My mom called me crying about this, and I just want to drive to Houston where he is and assault that person who told him this. All because they want to shunt him out of the hospital and into private care to avoid responsibility for his inevitable death on their watch.

              Fuck this country's healthcare system.

This probably isn't helpful, but dying isn't what triggers a malpractice action. Your uncle may want to consult with a lawyer.

Whatever their cause, they don't want him to die 'on their watch'. For plausible deniability or some nonsense. Like they keep trying to say the pressure wound was pre-existing and all that, when he was admitted right after his paralysis.

@Admiral pressure wounds suck. I got some after my cancer surgery (I'm a paraplegic) and it took most of a year for them to heal, with scarring on my ass. I'm 42. For someone in their later years, it's just horrible, and I'm so sorry he's had to deal with that. The hospital also discharged me early. I didn't sue because they mostly did my surgery pro bono.

I and my SO, who is a quadriplegic, have both been told we're burdens, especially by family (hence why we have cut thrm off for a few years), but also care providers. It's very common. I think it's even more awful to have happen to someone who setved their country.

Right now, I am pissed, because the police shut us down despite our work being protected under both local ordinances and the first amendment. Tickets, property confiscated, threats, the whole deal. This is our livelihood. We are both fully disabled and have no family to turn to. We don't have many options. I have to show up at court in 100+ degeee sunny heat to have my ticket tossed (and it will be) -- and Officer Asshole promised to find us and come after us again even if we got it dismissed (which it will be) -- and I am dangerously sun-sensitive.

So, now we're looking into lawyering up, because we need to file restraining orders against the metro police. Of course, it's the weekend, the aclu of nevada only takes web submitted requests, and all local lawyers offices are closed for the weekend.

We still need to make money, as being homeless won't work: a sun-sensitive paraplegic taking care of a quad will not work in sunny las vegas. If we were able-bodied, we could stay in the undercity while we got back on our feet (I was homeless yeeeears ago, when I was able), but we have no way to get down to the tunnels.

(This is not a plea for assistance, by the way. I don't want help, unless it's a first amendment or ADA lawyer's deets; I am just venting while we assess our options. I just want to get back to work.)

You know. I lived in Vegas (I just left) for a good many years. I have seen some corrupt shit go down. I mean on the flip side, I've seen some good stuff too.

So not to be all weird but I have a question. If you have restraining order against the police; who enforces it?

                        The courts.

I'm pretty sure @Catsmeow was referring to who physically enforces it. Because the Courts should have authority over the cops, but if it's the cops themselves you have a restraining order against, it's not really very reassuring to have the Courts say, 'yes, the police will leave you alone because if not they'll be reprimanded'. By whom? Who do you call to come defend you if cops are harrassing you?

                          Basically, Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

@Catsmeow apparently even the ACLU of Nevada won't get involved with this because 'it would be a conflict of interest' even though this is a pretty cut and dry civil rights violation AND ignoring rulings against Metro police that have gone down as recently as two weeks ago, speaking of how corrupt Vegas is.

The cops told us the courts locally are on their side about it despite said rulings, and that laws are what they say they are. They outright said so, they have no fear. I should have taped them (we did two others later and will be handing stuff to our lawyer) and will be next time this happens. 😕

Unless issued in a pending criminal case, all restraining orders, either temporary or interlocutory, are issued in the context of a civil action, and such restraining orders are intended to be compensatory rather than punitive.

In this case, the order would not say "the police must leave you alone"; rather, it would probably say "the police shall not make any further attempts to prevent you from doing X." Should the police thereafter cite you or bar you from doing X, you can bring that incident to the Court, which, upon finding contempt, could issue compensatory and punitive damages for violation of the court order.

So, you call your lawyer, your lawyer files a motion for contempt, and you get damages that way.

                              You police the police.

I actually hadn't put a bag in it yet, I was opening the can -to- put a bag in it, and I wasn't sure how else to approach this other than opening the lid >__<.

But I certainly would have taken it outside first if I knew it was going to explode death into my room.

On an unrelated not, this heatwave is fucking terrible and I'm absolutely useless right now.

                                      I need air conditioning.

I think the only way I could ever be sympathetic towards Neo Nazis is if my white ass ever accidentally landed in prison and the Bikers turned me down first.
