    • RE: Mage 2.0 Conversion Discussion

For The Magicians in particular you may want to expand (greatly) on the importance of rotes. Getting access to spells was super important thematically, and often the real difference between street level casters and your more formally educated variants.

Giving some teeth to improvised magic (or rather, its consequences) and maybe adjusting it so it's easier to fuck up a spell might also give you a way to keep the game low level, if you wanted to lend some rope to your players to hang themselves with.

@auspice The one thing I like about WoD is that it's ... I don't want to say popular, but common. Lots of players know it to a certain degree, which makes adoption a lot easier, and experienced players can educate newer ones.

It does have its drawbacks, and on top of those there's also the fact it's been in use for so long folks are tired of it, or make negative assertions about it ("a magic system will be broken/too powerful since it'll be like Mage").

@auspice Suggestion: Whatever system you choose, make sure the material is easy to find (free and available online is probably the best bet, else popular is almost as good).

If players need to find (more so, buy) five different obscure splatbooks to play a brand new game they don't even know if they will like... they probably won't.

      Oh no. I'm so sorry.

I'm cranky about it, sure, but it's not the worst news we've ever had. If anything, it was foreseeable.

      Oh well.

(As I mentioned before, she's survived several kinds of cancer before. But she's only got so many non-vital organs left in her.)

Shit, I just read this. I'm sorry Gany 😞

@bored Well for Jean I'd say the first thing that comes to mind for most people is "she keeps dying and coming back" which I'm told is a source of frustration for a lot of Jean players. But that aside, I think its not that hard to address the issue.

      What's frustrating about it?

Hell, that's a very common superpower. Nearly all superheroes possess it. 🙂

@gamerngeek That's another reason having a well defined 'period' for a game's setting is a good idea. If you app the Rebirth Batman you know which Batman you're getting, who the current Robin is, whether he already has a history with the JLA, etc.

    • RE: Good TV

@rnmissionrun I didn't like the first two episodes too much; I thought the show was going to be one thing, but then it turned out to be another. In fact it's not clear yet where they are going with it.

I'm enjoying it - I think more than any other new show so far, although the Orville is close. I think they are not mutually exclusive at all. And judging from the ratings at least it's in no danger of being cancelled.

@thenomain Of if you're into the utopia aspect of Star Trek then this show is definitely going to piss you off. It's way grittier than anything Trek has ever seen before.

@auspice Unless you plan to do a whole lot of STing yourself (or you have an army of GMs to do it for you), you should also pick whichever system/theme allows for players to generate as much of their own content as possible.

Does anyone else remember, about 10-15 years ago, how Staff could be hands-off and players would entertain themselves? And it wasn't all BarRP? People ran plots for themselves, for their friends, etc...

I think part of that is nostalgia. 🙂 And part is higher numbers and greater excitement when things were still relatively new and fresh.

But I remember entire spheres in early nWoD games in the 2000's dying for an absolute lack of things to do for example.

I think The Magicians and The Expanse are both decent settings for a MU, depending on the execution, though as you say The Expanse is a better natural fit for FS3 (not that I think The Magicians is un-doable, mind, if you don't want to get terribly crunchy with the magic stuff).

What I like about The Magicians is that there's an adult educational environment. That gives instant access to RP for people (teachers and experienced students teach newer students) but doesn't take options away.

There is also a modern world Out There, which is easier for most people to play around in than having to figure out the idiosyncrasies of futuristic/fantasy settings ("do toilets exist?").

Also the books and show are both kickass so.

Am I the only person here who thinks that in the context of a game like this, being a goddamn dirty mutie overrides pretty much anything regarding their sexual orientation, race, etc?

They are already freaking out about you existing at all, you abomination. They fear and hate you. What more can they do if you're also fucking the wrong gender?

@lotherio The CW probably has a much bigger operating budget than Netflix does to be completely honest. It's also probably easier to get producers.

The biggest advantage Netflix has is that they don't need to follow the usual TV template; no cliffhangers for commercial breaks, no constant exposition to catch viewers up from last week's episode - in fact nothing to help anyone catch up, since it's assumed they can just binge watch or start over any time they want.

From a narrative and storytelling point of view those are probably enormous tools for them, and a secondary effect could be that such freedoms attract better talent. The last part is speculative though.

Anything filed under "I was woken up in the middle of the night on a Monday" would normally belong to a different thread, but at like 4 am my oldest kitten barged into the room desperate for affection.

Like... he must have gotten up feeling severely love deprived or something because he just jumped on the bed and lost his shit around my hand trying to purr-position himself around my fingers to get petted, writhing like an idiot to increase the petting area. He ended up sleeping under my armpit, which made me unable to switch sides without waking the fucker up which was important somehow.

      Goddamn cats.

You're probably not going to find 10 active players at 2AM pacific on any MUSH except Shang, PenDes and Arx.

I think someone has already told me in the past, but my brain didn't withhold the information so it just leaked out.

      Wtf is PenDes?
