    • A theme-less, CGen-less game

      Hey folks,

For starters please keep in mind this is the constructive section of the site.

During a recent private discussion a user suggested that we run a neutral, themeless game on MSB. There would be no CGen or rules, only a way for people to log on, pick a room and just play whatever they have in mind.

In the interest of clarity and from my end the following restrictions should be assumed to be true:

      • No privacy violations by dark staff spying into what you're doing or logs saved of your conversations
      • Very little active administration other than to keep the game running.
      • Very few 'extra' features that don't come out of the box with whatever codebase, plus a diceroller.

I had some questions for you all.

      1. Is this something you'd be interested in? Would it be useful?

      2. Can people more or less behave/handle themselves?

      3. What codebase would be preferred?

The objective is to provide a service that's not too hard to maintain, so this thread is made to discuss the value of the former against the cost of the latter.

    • Looking for...

      Hey folks,

We're looking to fill a 'position' of wiki admin.

There are some plans about what's needed for this but the gist of it is we want an experienced person who can help organize content so it's easier to add and categorize, and who can make it look decent

This isn't expected to be a high intensity endeavor that requires too large a time investment after the original setup but... this is MSB, I suppose, so who knows. It will be pretty hands off from our end so you won't be micromanaged although ideally you should have enough time to complete the project.

If you're interested please drop me and @Ganymede a private message giving us a sense of your experience with wikis and if you have any ideas of your own you'd like to include.

      Thanks!

@thatonedude An HTML page is a static entity requiring shell access to edit.

A wiki is the best way to allow regular updates by multiple users. It's already in the works, pending waiting to hear back from people.

I came back from work to find the recycling and somemost of the garbage all over the kitchen floor.

The problem is I try to be fair, but there is just no way to know which of my two dogs is responsible for this...

@thenomain I live for the day we have to start censoring bots which simply learned how to act by parsing stuff from the internet.

I mean imagine the AI that could get created if it had learned all it knew going through MSB posts?

@darinelle If you have time now and then volunteer at a shelter. They almost always can use the help to walk their dogs and stuff, so that way you get to have many puppies.

@thenomain It's pretty funny, but I doubt AI wrote this. It reads very much like a human writing AI writing it.

@coin I'd be happy to set up a wiki on MSB's host if anyone wants to maintain it (whether it's @GangOfDolls or someone else).

The only time I've discussed my meals with coworkers is in a 'keeping variety in lunches is expensive, yo' sort of way.

Discussing your own habits is perfectly acceptable. We all rant about something.

@auspice said in Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.:

Aren't people too busy taking gym mirror selfies to judge anyone else anyway?

Insecurity is a very common background among people who're trying to stay fit. A lot of guys I know are pretty serious used to be quite heavy/skinny when they were kids and now they're overcompensating.

But even more so, and I say it with respect and love, being fit is, and should be, a very personal thing. You should be narcissistic in some way; it's your body, your goals, your effort and time, your choice of sports or routines, your motivation and discipline, your way.

It's okay to make it all about you.

But the worst, the worst is that he is constantly trying to weigh in and lecture people on their eating habits and diets. Like, @Arkandel knows what he's talking about. That's clear enough. But I don't want someone who eats fast food 2-3 times a day trying to tell me that my meal isn't good enough (I usually have a sandwich, carrots, and either an orange or pretzels depending on mood for lunch). Esp. when it's usually 'you should buy <whatever frozen diet meal he's into right now>.'

I'm sick of it, but really I'm sick of him. For so many reasons. But the slob behavior and the need to comment on everyone's eating habits are big ones.

For starters it doesn't matter what shape you're in - unsolicited advice is a no-no. Even at any half-decent gym it never happens; no one should come over while you're working out to give you tips no matter if they're a world-class contender unless you already know them and that's the kind of relationship you have with them... or, I guess, if you're in immediate clear and present danger or something.

The same thing happens with technical issues though. I've heard too many lectures about how Google is stealing our information from people who don't understand how any of this works - who are feeding Facebook everything they do the rest of the time. Personally if I'm sitting at a table and the conversation gets to these matters I shut up unless I'm asked.

The holiday season is usually reserved for tech requests by friends and family. "Hey, can you fix my computer issue? It will only take you a second!". Unless this comes from people actually close to me and not semi-friends I talk to a couple of times a year that's fine.

My actual peeve though comes in the form of that rare combination of someone both asking for my opinion and defending what they're already doing that they need help with, whether technical or otherwise.

This year's came in the form of nutritional advice. I mean no one is really eating properly during the holiday season, there are too many damn cookies, desserts and family get-togethers full of snacks for that to happen which is okay - but if you ask me then why do you argue what I say?

      "What should I do?"
      "Manage your caloric budget"
"But I hear intermittent fasting works!"
"Sure, that's a way to help you manage your caloric budget. First you'd need to calculate your TDEE and then track your intake, I can give you some links?"
"Eating ice increases your metabolism since your body needs to cool off."
"Uhm, sure? But it'd be a very tiny spend on your budget, you need..."
"Or eating celery, that's negative calories!"
"Well, sure, but it's still not that much at all."
"I'm doing this great diet I read about on that web site"
"Well if you like it and it works then do that."
      "But I'm not losing weight!'
"... Then why do you think it's great?"

I've been held hostage in pretty much this conversation in small variations twice in the last two weeks. Look, I'd never initiate that kind of chat - do what you want, people. But if you ask me then I'll tell you, and if what you're doing isn't working why are you defending it in the same breath you're come to ask me questions about what to do instead?

Also no, walking 'a lot' won't do much either if you eat junk at work, which I can't even blame anyone for when our management fills every available surface with sugar-filled stuff every morning.

    • RE: Buying Shit

People don't understand the true spirit of the holidays. This is so strange. I ask folks at work "hey, what did you get?" and they tell me something completely irrelevant such as "I don't celebrate Christmas".

That's besides the point! It's not about Christmas, it's about sales!

Folks should get stuff because it costs less to buy it. Religion just doesn't factor into it (and to be more serious for a moment here, commercializing religious occasions let alone inventing new ones irks me, unless it's also made into a stat holiday I'm off work, in which case woo-hoo!).

@aria Combine dog shit with fireworks for a spectacular display.

I hate that my older dog is deaf. It reminds me she's aging, which fuck you, time.

I love that my older dog is deaf because she used to get so angry at fireworks, and now she doesn't care any more, which keeps my anxious slightly-younger dog happy.

      My new instant pot.

Now I just need to figure out how to cook rice or noodles + chicken in it at the same time.

I ❤ my instant pot. It's so amazing, even though I use it for the same two things (chicken breasts, pulled pork) like 90% of the time.

But even for that it's holy-shit good, tender, moist meat for the time investment.

It's a good idea to plug your username/e-mail into https://haveibeenpwned.com/ now and then to see if it was ever included in a breach.

It's a far better idea to never, ever reuse passwords for any accounts you care to keep, and even more so, which hold private information about your identity.

More so for games than for most accounts types, in fact.
