@Ominous said in What Types of Games Would People Like To See?:

Yeah, humans only tends to cut out like 50% of the possible players. Or, you end up with some subset of humans standing in for the speshul elf people.

Just based off of the current population of human only games, I'm gonna have to disagree on that one. But I too would like a human only game 😞

You know what's funny? I think @Jeshin was answering your question and it was immediately taken as personal.

That's probably why we have problems in text games lol

@Auspice said in PC vs Player Assumptions:

      Yes and no.
What if you see a log go up and it's Player A talking to Player B about a plot scene and Player A is giving Player B all the wrong information?
Or Player A puts in a follow-up to research something and they're going on all the wrong assumptions?
This isn't just the path they're following in the plot scene, but everything they pursue after it.

I don't comment on IC information handed down unless they are getting theme wrong. If a player puts in a job based on wrong assumptions I will address the wrong assumptions at that time if necessary. I mean, people make wrong assumptions irl all the time and still come to the right conclusion.

You always have to come at something asking yourself how you would want staff to address if you were the player in question. Like, I dont know the exact situation here but just don't waste players time. Rp is a huge time suck, I dont want to find out I've been rping about the wrong thing for 4 weeks because staff didnt know if I was ICly or OOCly dumb and didnt want to interfere.

Isn't this basically just a discussion of "yes and" and "no but" storytelling again? In GH, some of my better plots are about the minor detail that my players jumped all over that, during the time, had no story attached to it.

I will tell players when they are beating a dead horse though. Or when they are going the absolutely wrong way. I think you need to be honest with your players in order to keep a healthy community going. I don't want to waste anyone's time having them rp dead ends, and I don't want to waste my time either.

@RDC is it Harvest Moon? idk about that one, I think the head Admin is on vacation for the next couple of weeks or something and they were still in testable beta.

    • RE: First Through the Gate Syndrome

I think it has a lot to do with whether or not you're in the mood to set the "tone" for the scene. When I'm playing, a lot of times I'll wait for other people to pose in first because I'm not sure of a lot of things - I don't know how I want to arrive, I don't know what kind of mood everyone is going to be in, I want to wait for someone else to "dictate" the response to the GM set, etc.

In the scenes I GM, I tend to think that people feel the same way I do. The first pose after the GM set is the pose people will try to emulate. If that person poses what clothes they are wearing, I guarantee you everyone else will. That sort of thing.

I guess STs could just make you roll for pose order as the 1st thing you do to get that out of the way, but I can't really think of any other way to avoid this.

    • RE: What Types of Games Would People Like To See?

@mietze My suggestion? Instead of focusing on how to limit your playerbase, focus on how to empower them. Allow your PCs to run PRPs with no (or extremely few) hoops to jump through. Employ players to assist with jobs that you don't want to do (build jobs, apps, etc) so that you can focus on STing if that's what you want to do.

Yes, a game with a lot of characters can feel overwhelming at times, and maybe you can't touch EVERY SINGLE PERSON EVER at all times, but you should still be able to involve active players if they want to be involved.

If you want to focus on touching every player individually, then limit your playerbase from the beginning with the acknowledgement that you're going to be consistently opening the gates to let fresh blood in and have to repeatedly figure out how to catch the new people up from a game that was closed/blocked off for periods of time. Which tbh sounds freaking exhausting.

Also, it's not a PVP game, but you do have characters with opposed agendas/desires - there are criminals and cops, for example. I think people are still feeling out how to navigate that in ways that are fun for everyone, but the playerbase thus far has seemed pretty willing to have conflict IC while remaining chill OOC, and to respect the difference between 'fun conflict' over 'and I must murder this PC and everyone they know because it is what my character would do'. Which is something that I very much hope continues.

This right here is my favorite thing about the game and intend to do my part as GM to keep this atmosphere running strong.

@Ghost Thank you! Things that are normal but out of place are my go-to for creepy. Nothing like being in the woods and realizing no birds are chirping.

That's an excellent set up for a Dream tbh. People think that they have to be sleeping to have a Dream but it's really just one of those situations where you can be walking along and suddenly slip into the Dreamscape of the Veil. I would try to sort recent logs by "Dream" if you want inspiration.

@RDC We have some pretty comprehensive theme files that should answer your questions. The Dark Men theme file is here: https://gray-harbor.com/wiki/theme:dark_men but I think that question's been answered above.

As for what there is to be afraid of? Dreams are our main source of terror (psychological and otherwise). Dreams can be player run plots, ST/GM'd stories, etc. We also currently have a few plots going involving: a) a serial killer, b) real-world criminal dealings, c) a flu, d) a cursed object and those are just the GM'd plots. We also have STs running plots constantly involving horror elements (scary house, monster of the week, etc). Plots and related logs are here: https://gray-harbor.com/plots

@Three-Eyed-Crow we are definitely not banning trans people or anything like that.

But hey! In real Gray Harbor news, we just celebrated our 3 month gameversary. I never expected us to have such a huge and lively population and logging in every day brings me a great amount of joy. So thanks to everyone who is playing and making the game fun for everybody. I truly appreciate all our amazing players!

But the REAL question is if you are banning legless psychic bartenders, or if that's just not the way you roll.

The only concept we've outright banned is former assassins turned history professors 😄 Bartenders are still closed tho. Go be a barista.

@crayon I'd kill for a xanth game or a neverwhere game!!! I have had a zombie survival game in the back of my mind for awhile but I've never been sure how to get over some of the issues (mostly involving the death of characters and how I think 'random zombie raid' would get tiring after awhile even if you mixed it up with other plots)

    • RE: Where to play?

@Pacha I think one of the more difficult things in Gray Harbor (and games like it) is learning how to catch rp via the Ares system. It's not like Arx where you can hang out on a public square room and people will come. You have to open a public scene and put it out there on the RP channel (preferably with some kinda idea about what the scene will be). People who do that are super successful at getting RP.

But if you ever need an RP hook, we are here to help. You can always page me in game (almightyme) or my coadmin (karmabum) and we can direct you to people who are interested in the same things you are, or give you an idea of a hook to chase 🙂
